The Worst Man

It starts with a joke and a wedding invitation. He gets a letter in the mail, and the contents, are well, laughable. What else is he supposed to think when he gets invited to Kacchan and Uraraka's wedding as the "worst man"?

He gets a good chuckle out of it. Obviously him and Kacchan are on good terms, but it's a running gag to pretend to still hate each other. Sometimes it doesn't feel like Kacchan's pretending, but that's just how he is. The point is, Izuku thinks that's all it is. Just a joke. Kacchan invites him as the "worst man" as a play on "best man" because he doesn't do sappy stuff like that. Izuku will show up, enjoy the wedding, and not think anything more of it.

That is, until the day finally comes.

Izuku drives there with Iida so they can reminisce about when they and Uraraka were an inseparable trio.

"I can't believe she chose Bakugou of anyone though." Iida remarks. He looks thoughtful. "I guess you can never predict love."

Izuku himself, was quite surprised. Sure, he's seen Uraraka and Kacchan act civilly with each other, but he wouldn't have thought they'd get together. Kacchan certainly didn't seem like the marrying type. And Uraraka,...she had been getting along well with Tsuyu lately, enough to make Izuku think they would be an item. In the end, it isn't Izuku's place to stop two people who want to be together. They're a good match...kinda.

"I'm sure they must've formed a deeper connection and we just didn't notice. We all have our own lives now." Izuku muses.

Iida nods, accepting it as well.

When they arrive at the church, they park the car and head for the chapel. Izuku already recognizes many of the guests. Most of them are pro heroes: classmates, coworkers and retired teachers. As he walks in, he waves to a few.

"Hey Iida, can you go save me a seat?" Izuku asks as he realizes something. "I need to go talk to the groom."

Iida smiles. "Sure thing, Midoriya."

Izuku smiles back and thanks him before he goes to find Kacchan. He wants to ask about his role as the best man, or worst man, and if there's anything in particular he needs to do during the ceremony. Kacchan didn't exactly say anything further about it, besides what was written on the invitation. They didn't have any rehearsals beforehand either. Izuku just hopes he won't mess everything up.

He turns the corner to the next hall and bumps into someone. He apologizes quickly and then realizes who it is.

"Todoroki-kun!" Izuku greets, a wide smile on his face. And wow. Todoroki looks way too good in a suit. It should be illegal. Izuku feels his face flush and hopes it doesn't show.

Todoroki smiles back. "Midoriya. It's been a while." Izuku ignores the way his heart thumps at that smile.

"It has been." They stare at each other, Izuku taking in Todoroki's perfect hair for the occasion, when it occurs to him where they are.

"Uh, what are you doing back here?" He asks. "And not with the other guests?"

Todoroki looks around, as if noticing where they are for the first time. "Oh. I had to talk with Uraraka about my duties. She chose me as the best man. Honesty, I thought she would've picked someone else, perhaps you or Iida." He pauses, registering what he just said, "I'm sorry, was that insensitive?"

Izuku, although confused, reassures his friend. "No, you're fine. I think Uraraka made a good choice."

He must have gotten it wrong then. Maybe Kacchan didn't intend for him to be best man at all and it was some sort of misunderstanding. Izuku feels a bit disappointed, but he quickly shoves it down. Today isn't about him. The bride or groom could choose whoever they wanted as the best man.

"I have to go now, but it was a pleasure seeing you again Midoriya. Maybe we can hang out after the ceremony?" Todoroki asks with a soft smile. He rubs the back of his neck and Izuku finds it endearing.

"That sounds great. I should be going too. Iida saved me a seat and I wouldn't want to keep him waiting."

They nod and then awkwardly turn in opposite directions. Izuku tries to calm the fast beating of his heart. He hasn't seen Todoroki for a while and it's doing things to him.

Well, he ought to rejoin Iida. He's not the best man anymore- Todoroki is. He can talk to Kacchan about the joke later, perhaps laugh about it in his toast to the happy couple. Izuku starts to walk away when someone latches onto his collar and covers his mouth with their hand, pulling him into a room and closing the door. The person releases him almost immediately and as Izuku whirls around, quirk activated and ready to fight, he hears the door lock.

But once he stares at his attacker, his quirk fizzles out.

"Kacchan…

...that suit looks good on you." Izuku begrudgingly admits. He completely forgets about seconds prior and studies his friend. Burgundy really compliments Kacchan's eyes and the black is incredibly slimming while also clearly defining his muscles-

"Shut the fuck up Deku, where the hell have you been?!" He hisses, his voice low but angry.

Izuku blinks. "I got here about ten minutes ago?"

Kacchan scoffs. "'Course. Why the fuck did I choose you to be my worst man? I should've just picked fucking half and half." He mutters, pacing across the room and then stops and grimaces. "No. You'd be a better choice, he would've set this whole place on fire. Should've just been here earlier. We're running out of time."

Has he missed something? Izuku thinks he's missed something. What is Kacchan saying? Wasn't Todoroki the best man?

"Uh…" Izuku says intelligently. "What's going on?"

Kacchan turns to him and now that Izuku notices, he seems nervous, agitated in a way Izuku's never seen before. It causes Izuku to pause. Something is wrong.

"I need you to stop the wedding."
