Chapter 2

Peter had been unconscious all night, after they made sure he was okay Banner had let Tony go back with him. It was nearly 5 am when he heard Peter start to wake up, he immediately hit the nurse call light and was by Peter's side before he could even open his eyes.

“Mr. Stark?” Peter asked in a hazy state

“ Hey kid, I'm right here but I wouldn't try to sit up if I were you.” Tony replied nodding at the large amount of wires and bandages.

Peter looked down and quickly started to panic as he realized that his arms and thighs were bandaged as well, he was fully panicking at that point trying to hide his arms under the thin hospital blanket but as he did Tony grabbed his arm carefully and said

“I know, but all I care about right now is getting you out of this hospital bed.”

Peter’s stomach dropped at his words. How could he have been so stupid, if he had never gone ahead of Bucky he wouldn't have triggered the bombs and if he didn't trigger the bombs Mr. Stark would have never found out and he wouldn't be sitting next to his mentor trying to hold back tears.

“I’m sorry I -I didn’t want you to know, it just – “ Peter stumbled out before Tony cut him off

“Kid, you don't need to apologize, okay? I should have noticed sooner but I'm not worried about that right now. We will figure it out later, I just need to get you okay for now.” He said, giving Peter a small smile and letting go of his arm.

“God he hates you know, I mean who wants to be around someone who is such a burden. You couldn't even do a simple mission without causing problems. “ The voice hissed as Peter was spiraling and before he could begin to calm down a nurse and Banner came into the room.

“Hey Peter, how are you feeling?” Banner asked as the nurse went over next to him to start changing bandages which caused Peter to panic more sending him over the edge.

“Can’t b-breath.” Peter wheezed as he started to hyperventilate.

Tony immediately recognized this as a panic attack as Banner quickly came over having the nurse leave and tried to help him calm down.

“Okay, Peter I need you to try and slow your breathing ok? In through your nose and out through your mouth.” Banner said.

“Listen to Banner, kid just breathe.” Tony added in a calm tone exampling on himself.

Peter's breathing started to level out after a few minutes he had unconsciously started to press his palm into his thighs reopening the fresh cuts on them, when Tony noticed this he grabbed his hands and held them until he started to calm down more.

“Okay Peter how are you feeling now?” Banner asked?

“Better, I'm sorry.” he replied in a small voice barely above a whisper.

“Hey don't apologize, it's okay I get them too.” Tony said, trying to reassure him.

“ We are going to need to clean your wounds and change the dressings. We could give you a sedative but it's up to you. Whatever makes you more comfortable.” Banner said in a sympathetic voice.

“No it's okay you don't need to give me anything.” Peter replied, still trying to stop his voice from shaking.

“Okay, I'll send the nurse back in a few minutes.” Banner said before leaving the room.

“Do you want me to stay or go when they change the bandages?” Tony asked.

“Stay please.” He replied quickly in an almost pleading tone.

“Wow begging now are we, can't handle anything without him can you?” The voice mocked.

Peter felt pathetic for basically begging his mentor to stay with him instead of being able to handle it on his own. He had started to dissociate when the nurse came in to change the bandages.

“Are you ready Mr. Parker?” She asked in a too perky voice.

“ Yes.” He replied but looked away when she went to take the bandages off of his arms.

Tony couldn't help but look, he kept thinking about how he hadn't noticed. And he couldn't help but to blame himself for it because he should have noticed. He should have known when he quit wearing his science tees in turn for sweaters and long sleeves, or when he stopped sleeping as much or any of the obvious signs that something was wrong.

Peter noticed Tony staring at his arms as the nurse cleaned the self-inflicted wounds. Tears started to come to his eyes regardless of how hard he was trying to push them down.

“ How much of a freak do you think he thinks you are? And now you're going to cry in front of him. Pathetic, everyone would be so much better off without you here to pull them down. No one wants to be around such a pathetic freak.” The voice taunted the words cutting like a knife.

Tony noticed Peter starting to cry so he quickly took his gaze off of his arms unsure of what to do he grabbed his hand in his and said

“Look at me, it's OK, things get hard and people cope not always in healthy ways. That doesn't mean I'm saying that I support you hurting yourself. I just want you to know you're not alone, I'm here okay?”

Hearing him say that made Peter cry harder not because he was more upset but because no one has ever seemed to understand him like that and it made him feel safe.

“Thank you, Mr. Stark.” He said in just above a whisper.

“Okay, I'm done with this arm. Is it okay if Mr. Stark is here when I do the ones on your thighs next or would you rather he step out?” The nurse asked.

“ He can stay .” He replied looking down as she started to unwrap the bloody bandages covering his thighs.

As she removed them Tony glanced down and his heart dropped again. He had seen them on the plain but they didn't look as bad, but in bright lights he saw the scars layering on top of each other and the now bleeding fresh cuts. He looked away because he knew if he didn't he might not be able to hold himself together.

The nurse finished up changing Peter's bandages before leaving Peter to rest, she had recommended for Tony to go get some rest too but he refused to leave Peter. Peter had been asleep for a while when Tony finally fell asleep in the chair next to him.
