Chapter 5
Remus POV:
Over the past week Remus had found his mind constantly occupied by Sirius. His deep blueish gray eyes, his long black hair, his smile, his laugh. The dark bags under his eyes, the way his clothing hung off him as if it were two sizes too big, the broken look in his eyes after…
His frustration and anger at Sirius as a result of ‘the prank’ was long gone. Remus had forgiven him. He would always forgive him because in his mind Sirius was always someone worthy of forgiveness.
The sound of tapping on the window snapped him out of his thoughts. He looked over and saw James’ owl sitting there with a letter in its beak. Remus set his book down and opened the window letting the owl in and stroking his feathers gently. He took the letter from his beak and opened it carefully extracting the script inside. He sat back down in an old leather chair. As his in folded the parchment his heart dropped.
‘Dear Moony,
Hey. So I don’t know how to say this but Sirius had an accident. He’s not doing so well. I don’t know what to do. It’s really really bad moony. They almost killed him. I just- can you come over? I think he would like to see you when he wakes up. Just come through the floo ok? Love you mate. See you soon.
- Prongs’
His breath quickened. ‘Nononono’ this couldn’t be happening. Sirius had to be ok. He had to be. Remus scramble up from the chair , the book from earlier long forgotten. He raced up the stairs to his room and grabbed his wand and a few other things (a jacket, spare clothes, etc.). He was back in his living room in no time and about to step into the fireplace when a thought struck him. ‘Oh. Mum’ he grabbed a spare piece of parchment from the book shelf and wrote a message for her. He hoped she would understand.
Remus stepped into the fireplace with a handful of floo powder “potter mansion!” A blinding flash of light and the living room transformed. Remus stepped through into the potter residence coughing at the soot that flew up around him. His eyes fell to the boys on the couch. On James potter, now awake, and- his breath caught in his throat. Sirius black looked awful. His pale skin accentuating the ghastly bruises on his body and the dark circles under his eyes. Remus’ heart shattered and how small he looked. “Oh Siri” he whispered.
Remus stumbled over to the couch settling between his friends. He hugged James. “He’ll be ok.” He said softly, more to himself than to his friend than to his friend.
“It was worse.”
Remus started at James’ voice. “What?”
“Before he passed out. While mum and dad were healing the worst of it.” His voice got softer. “He was screaming. And in so much pain. And I couldn’t help him.”
Remus hugged James tighter. “Shhhh he’s safe now, that’s all that matters.”
That was true. Sirius was safe. He had one of the most skilled medi-witches helping to heal him. James had fallen back to sleep, so Remus gently laid him to rest on the arm of the couch. Beside him Sirius shifted in his sleep, whining in pain. Remus grabbed another blanket and laid it over the sleeping boy. He grabbed another, wrapping himself in it, and slowly drifted off.
