Chapter 6
I woke up to my phone ringing. I groaned into my pillow, head already pounding, while Amy threw her pillow at me to get me to turn it off.
I almost smack the phone off the bedside table when I go to grab it, but I remain victorious. Though, my victory quickly went away when I saw it was Matthew Murdock calling me.
I picked up, “Uhhh?”
“Why would you walk home drunk in the dark?”
“Uhm,” I scanned my brain for a reason as to why the hell he would know that, and then remembered almost being mugged the night before. Ah, fuck. “I plead the fifth?”
“Edith.”
I rolled my eyes, which made the headache worse, “What time is it?”
“Seven in the morning.”
“Whyyyy,” I looked over at Amy, again asleep on her side of the bed. We were in Amy’s room, but she has a big enough bed. We made it work.
Matt didn’t answer right away, “I knew you would be hungover. Why would you put yourself in danger like that?”
“Dunno,” I yawned, “I don’t have to get up until noon. Goodbye.” I hung up the phone. He immediately called back. I picked up again. “I said goodbye.”
“I’m going to tell Foggy.”
“Booo,” I said, even giving a thumbs down, not that he could see (ha). “We do it all the time. Never been mugged before.”
“How often are you drinking?”
“What are you, a D.A.R.E. officer?”
“Edith.”
“Uggggh,” I wanted to hang up on him again, but he would just call back, and if I didn’t answer that I didn’t doubt that him repeatedly calling back is something he’d do, “Like, three times a month? I’m a teenager.”
“You shouldn’t be drinking.”
“Dude,” I was too awake now. I wanted Advil. “Don’t you dare act like you haven’t been getting drunk since you were my age. Nuns raised you.”
“Exactly.”
“Yeah, so you were probably rebellious.”
Matt didn’t answer right away again. I grinned. Got him.
“So don’t tell Foggy, or my parents, or Candace. You can tell Theo, he won’t care. And I will keep going to parties and next time I’ll make sure it isn’t just me and Amy walking home.” My mouth tasted funky. I needed to brush my teeth. “Normally Jamal and the rest of Amy’s friends walk with us but he was getting laid. Plus, you’re you. You could probably hear me call out for help on the other side of the Kitchen.”
“I can,” Matt confirmed.
“There you go! Now, I need to go take enough Advil to shut down my liver. Don’t call me again. Bye.”
