Sitting Ducks

Sakura yelped and again Sasuke was checking her arm. The bite mark was starting to swell but the bleeding had ceased. "Sakura, can you describe what you're feeling right now?" he asked. She sucked in a breath then managed out, "A burning...sensation...and it's going up...my arm..."

Sasuke frowned then ever so gently, he picked up Sakura. Automatically, she put her good arm around his neck and cradled her bad arm on her stomach.

Then he looked at Naruto. The blonde was still pinned to a tree and wasn't moving. The sight made his heart clench. What had that freak ninja done to him?

He managed to get Naruto down and onto his back then slowly made his way through the trees. Sakura whimpered less and less, her breath became more ragged and sharp. Naruto breathed slowly and weakly on his neck.

Eventually, he found a place: a nook between the roots of a massive tree. By then, the sun had began to set, casting the foliage in warm orange and yellow shades.

He set them both down then lingered his gaze. Sakura was now pale and sweating, Naruto had color to his face but something about his peaceful expression made Sasuke swallow.

At that, he looked away and focused on his leg wound.

He removed the decorative wrapping and winced as he saw the shallow hole in his thigh that held a pool of blood. Carefully he cleaned and bandaged the wound before covering it with a fresh set of wrappings. Then he glanced back. Sakura and Naruto were just like he left them.

He turned forward, drew a kunai and prepared for a sleepless night,
