Chapter 4
POV:Y/N
The air was so calm in the hut. Fire was quietly cracking in the background, it´s warm shades illuminating round room. The only louder sound was coming from sleeping Fang by the door and our pens, scratching paper. Man sitting in front of me was deep in thought. Pen stopping for a moment as his forehead shaped into deep frown. , Probably spelling, I thought and smiled to myself.
I finished my writing a while ago and as I curiously scanned the room my eyes fell on him. I was fascinated, by his looks, personality, simply every piece of him. His hair was as wild as man himself, cascading to his wide, round shoulders. Most of the time I couldn´t even tell where they finished and where started the beard. It was like they were entangled into one big endless mass of hair. On this dark background of his face shone two eyes. Very kind, curious, laughing eyes. They were spoiling so much about him and yet telling nothing. He wasn´t that simple. I was aware. His mouth wasn´t much of an omen about his true mood either. It was always shaped into that jolly smile that I adored.
,,Big man as myself is less scary when he smiles.” He once told me. Maybe he was right…but….
I slid my gaze down his beard, getting to his chest and belly. Soft matting under his shirt was standing out, leaning against table. It looked so comfortable. I was always so self- cautious about my big tummy but this man looked simply good with it. It completed him nicely. His arms were resting on desk, supported by his elbows. Meaty hands that could give bear- crushing hugs swiftly moved as he wrote last of his words. He was writing down the list of creatures that were resistant to curses for me. He insisted on it- sweet man that Hagrid - but truth to be told, what I saw from my sitting spot I will have a bit of trouble with his handwriting. Oh well, It should be fun. He looked very composed but at the same time out of place with pen in his hand and when I looked at his face, he was noticeably feeling like that too. After all, maybe the best place for him was the forest where he could be himself, moving so sure and fast among trees and rocks. It was always fascinating to watch him thrive in his own element while I accompanied him on his patrols.
I heard a huff. When I lifted my eyes, I saw Hagrid fanning the collar or his shirt, letting it hang loosely afterwards, giving me a nice view on his unprotected hairy chest. I felt my breath hitched at the sight, wanting so badly to ride my hand through that forest of hair. He must have noticed because he hurriedly fixed it and cleared his throat.
,,It´s hot in here. Don´t you think?”
If somebody would poke me with the stick I wouldn´t stand up as fast as I did right now. I nervously wandered into the empty space, ignoring his following gaze.
,,Yes, it is…strangely.”
Fang interrupted by my movement stood up and came to me, sniffing me curiously.
,,That´s a good boy.” I said very much thankful for his curiosity, not leaving me flap around my hands like a disoriented bat.
,,Show off!” Hagrid mumbled grumpily and looked away for a moment. It was enough time for me to calm down. Scratching the dog behind his ear one last time I walked through the room to Hagrid´s side.
,,Is that the list?” I asked and picked the paper up.
,,Yes it is. Sorry for my writing. If you will have any troubles with it, feel free to come and ask any time…. Or I will rewrite it. Yes, maybe I should. I will do it now, or you will do it and I will…..no, no I will….”
He was talking, well babbling really, so fast I barely understood him. I smiled at his panicked manner and put my hand on his shoulder.
,,I think I can manage.” I smiled. ,, Thanks for helping me. You taught me so much today. I owe you.” I watched as his cheeks started to redden.
,,Oh, don´t be silly. Anyone would be able to help you.”
,,But not as much as you.” I looked him in the eyes, utterly lost, I didn´t dare to move at all. It was like time has stopped. Shapes of shadows were dancing on his face and I was mesmerized again. I leaned a bit closer to him, resting my hands on his forearms for support. He seemed unsure but as if caught up in the mirror he was moving with me. We met in the middle, our foreheads touching.
,,What are we doing?” He asked
I couldn´t think of anything meaningful. It was like a spell, very powerful one, constantly pulling me towards him.
,,I don’t know. Doing what feels right?.” was all I managed to say.
,,I told you. You shouldn´t tease me like this.”
,,I am not.” With those words I leaned into him. Our lips met on brief moment. I felt his big hands on me, one on my waist and the other on my cheek. He pulled me closer and connected our lips again. I lost it…. Oh Merlin, I did! I pressed harder against him, tilting my head deepening the kiss. He was keeping up as best as he could, moving his hand from my waist to my back, pressing me closer, If only that was possible. Parting my legs I started to climb into his lap, comfortably sitting myself on his legs, facing him with pleased smirk.
,,So at last.”
He seemed startled but I could tell he liked it.
,,So you weren´t joking earlier?.”
He said with smile of his own, hugging me around my waist. My hand as if on reflex shot to his beard, fingers digging into thick hair, wandering, exploring, wanting.
,,I wouldn´t dare!” I said teasingly.
,,Liar!.” He laughed and gently tugged a stray lock of hair behind my ear.
We stayed like this for a while, looking at each other, savoring the feeling of odd satisfaction, when the whisper cut the silence.
,,Why are they so quiet?”
The hushed voice said somewhere in the corner of the room. Hagrid and I looked in the direction of the noise and then at each other.
,,What was that?” I asked and started to search the room for the source of the noise.
,,Are they still there?”
,,Shhhhh….you will give us out!”
The other voice snapped.
,,Don´t you shush me!”
Hagrid lifted me from his lap and put me down and quickly stood up, stepping in front of me.
,,Who´s there?” He asked with a warning edge in his voice
,,Blast! Are you happy now?” The male voice in the corner hissed
,,That´s your fault you old fool!” The female voice snapped back, followed by the panicked ruckus. Those voices. They were strangely familiar….where did I ever heard them? I thought as I drawn my wand for protection.
,,Mute it…mute it, Quick!”
,,Don´t rush me woman!”
,,Come on out while I am asking nicely!” Hagrid growled and stalked to the corner of the room to confront the intruder. But there was no one, only big desk covered up with old rag. Hagrid lifted it, to look under the table, but there was also no sign of movement.
,,What in the hell was that?” I asked when I got to him. Scanning the table in front of me. There were all kids of odd looking stuff, but nothing seemingly out of place. Just then, I saw a little flash of blue light peak through the gray cloth buried in the mess. I lifted it, finding the old crystal ball. Strange…it seemed active.
,,Did you used this recently?” I turned to Hagrid pointing to the ball.
,,No I didn´t…to be honest I forgot I had one of these.” He came to me and lifted the shiny object, inspecting it when his eyes widened.
,,Who´s there?” He spoke into the ball like it was a telephone.
,,What are you doing?” I asked, trying not to laugh at the sight.
,,These things were used in all kinds of ways during the war and I will give my left foot for it that someone was spying on us….” He pointed to the ball lifting it to the light.
,,Are you kidding me?” I came to him staring at the object in his hands, but there was nothing. The ball became clear. Hagrid frowned and gave it to me.
,,Well, whoever it was…They are gone now.”
,,Don´t you think they sounded familiar?” I asked deep in thought. He looked at me, simply nodding and then the small smile appeared on his face.
,,I think I will pay our headmaster a visit tomorrow….” He stood up from the chair he was sitting on and passed to the fire.
,,What? What he has do with it?” I asked, watching him throw the big log of wood into the fire. He didn´t turn to me, still working on his task. What in the beard was happening? I found a small wooden chest on the ground near the table and I closed the crystal ball in it, after I thoroughly wrapped it in the soft rag. One can´t be more careful. Fickle, that is the word I liked to use for all subject magic, either things, animals or human…all the same.
I came to Hagrid´s side, putting my hand on his shoulder to get his attention. He jumped a little, not expecting my presence.
,,Do you think it was Dumbledore on the other end?”
,,It´s just a hunch, and if not, he will surely know what to do.”
I answered with a nod, leaving the subject. His forced activity was enough of a signal for me that he didn´t wanted to talk about it.
,,It´s late. I should go now.” I walked up to the kitchen table and started to pack up my things into my bag.
,,Yeah…I.I will walk you back.” He said quietly, still tending to the fire.
