Summary
This is my attempt at compiling the speculations, hypotheses, theories, and discussions that happen in the discord of anonymous magpie (Sarcasm & Slytherin, Once and Future King, Trunk full of Chaos, etc.) https://archiveofourown.org/users/anonymousmagpie/pseuds/anonymousmagpieI'm doing this 1) to keep (summarised versions of) our discussions available because some of our conclusions were quite fun2) to give inspiration to anyone with enough patience to actually write a fic, rather than just throwing out promptsThere will be wand lore, mockery of canon plot holes, ideas for deviation points from canon etc. Also lots of discussions of fun ways to use magic in more creative ways to cause pain/death than torture curse/magic gunAll credit goes to #general-hp-universe in this discord: https://discord.gg/ahbdvPDZ5d (anonymous magpies server)

Felix Felicis and other drugs

Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoW 1. the effects of both normal and too large doses can easily be attributed to the effect of being tipsy - confidence, a feeling of happiness and carelessness, etc.
2. several of the ingredients are just random mundane plants and i think the rest doesn't have any specific in-universe luck properties, either
3. nobody ever uses it outside of harry when he wins it in first class. snape sure doesn't seem as though he's used it ever because he just has no luck in life. and even if we claim that snape can't brew it - clearly slughorn can. and he didn't make any to use during the war effort? Suspicious

the things harry does with it aren't especially difficult tasks. if he'd drank it before the first task in goblet of fire, maybe that'd be a point for it working, but talking to slughorn to get the memory? that's nothing you need magical intervention for

Grumer I don't think this is a canon explanation, but it could be that some ingredients are incredibly difficult to acquire. Like that could be the reason for Slughorn or Snape not having any during the battle of Hogwarts. Death Eaters would probably have more resources to get some, but then there would be still the problem remaining that they might overdose. For example I could easily see Bellatrix death in the Battle of Hogwarts to be a consequence to an overdose of Felix felicis. Voldemort not using it could be easily attributed to his own hubris.

Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoW reasonable explanation. would however beg the question of why slughorn would just give out something so special. available to the entire class, no less. if it was just in the slug club, maaayybe that would be justified by his desire to collect people, but with all these random students? don't think so. also, dumbles definitely had the resources in terms of favours and influence to get the stuff. we've seen how his method of collecting people works. i doubt he restrained himself to hagrid, snape, dobby, and harry

Grumer I definitely see your point. Unless he already knew that Harry would be the one to get it but that would open a whole new bunch of questions.

Serious Scribble Dumbledore, in particular, would not use it for reasons of his personal ethics or worldview. What will be, will be; using liquid luck is cheating fate. He wouldn't use it in order not to die, for instance.

And for the others, you can come up with any number of explanations. Most will centre around how (canonically) it is terribly difficult to brew and also toxic -- if Slughorn, who can clearly brew it, only ever used it twice, and feels no desire to use it again, that might just be approaching the limit of how often you can use it in your entire life, without consequences.

Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoW if two doses are the only safe amount, it's doubly irresponsible to give students access to it. particularly when there's a war on and everybody knows that they are going to be the main soldiers because the vast majority of adult british wixen apparently doesn't want to get involved if they're not death eaters

Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoW this implies he has a consistent moral stance on stuff and i don't buy it. he's a shifty asshole

also, clearly didn't give snape - who's around a killer snake all the time - some phoenix tears to keep as insurance

Serious Scribble We'll disagree on Dumbledore, then. But as for the first, that's not an argument. Or rather, if you want to to posit it's irresponsible (I'm not sure I see it, but besides the point), then Slughorn is irresponsible. This is a thing that's possible.

All that said, maybe Slughorn did risk it. It would be quite in his character to have a bit stuffed away for an emergency. And of course he wouldn't hand it out then; having luck is only useful if everyone else doesn't.

It could explain why he even decided to duel Voldemort and top of it didn't die.

I actually rather like that

It always bugged me that Slughorn returned to fight Voldemort

He should have stayed out of it and let others fight

But if he drank Felix Felices, he knew he had an advantage, so he could risk it and look good doing it, avoiding any suspicions that might fall on him for being Slytherin's Head of House during Voldemort's reign.

Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoW it's not an argument for it being impossible, just me being annoyed that no adult in hp has some semblance of logic or responsibility in their head

Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoW yea, but why would you offer it as a reward in a class with the children of his enemies?

that's some bad planning right there if he thinks about it being safed for later usage by others

Serious Scribble Heh. Did he do that, now? I mean, Harry clearly got it, yeah. But if, say, Draco had won ... what would he have gotten? Gillywater?

There's no indication for that, ofc, but it's something I can see.

Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoW the bottle was on display, as far as i remember. would've been some fiddling to change those. also the charm to make the other potion look, taste, smell correctly. he could've simply offered up a mystery potion as reward and alter it dependent on who won

if that's what we're going with

Grumer I somehow got the plot line in my head now, that Slughorn time travelled a year back in time and gave the potion to harry to prevent the death of some members of the DA.

could be fixed, and he could pull him out of the water any time with magic.

Helios [xe/xem]im looking at the wiki for felix and it just sounds like alcohol

It was meant to be used sparingly, however, as it caused giddiness, recklessness, and dangerous overconfidence if taken in excess. Felix was highly toxic in large quantities and was also a banned substance in all organised competitions, such as Quidditch, along with all other methods of cheating.[1][2] It was very difficult to make, disastrous if made wrong, and required six months to stew before it was ready to be consumed.[4]

thats just booze

Theodore Z DiAngelo Holy hell i just thought of something. The only time harry is reckless is at hogwarts near the end if the school year. He is also very lucky around that time as well. What if harry had been dosed with small amounts of felix felicis during the year....... Excessive use can cause recklessness and overconfidence.....

Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoW Hahahahahaha new head canon

Nothing more recklessness to let someone murder you and hope it doesn't stick.... Again

True epilogue is harry having a hell of a time in rehab

Theodore Z DiAngelo Ph yes its also said to be addictive. At least in the fic im reading

Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoW I mean I'm still unconvinced that it isn't just a cocktail so that'd be fitting

Theodore Z DiAngelo Holy shit thats why harrys sp antsy to get back to hogwarts. Hes having withdrawals from it.

Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoW Lol imagine some pureblood idiots who had Felix Felicia before being out in the muggle world for drinks

And then being absolutely SHOOK that Felix is just there in huge quantities

Theodore Z DiAngelo Omg

Id like to know the difference between firewgiskey and regular

Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoW I'm going with none and wixen just want t to feel special

Theodore Z DiAngelo Just imagine them ordering wizarding alcohol. Id like a giggle water.

Queen of the Cards, Lady of EHoW They are extraordinarily lazy when it comes to inventing shit

Theodore Z DiAngelo Bartender gives them seltzer water
