Chapter 1
It was the night of Halloween 1981 when everything went wrong.
“Lily he's here” James screamed.
Lily Potter came running out of the kitchen, dish towel in hand. “Ok we prepared for this, I'll go grab Harry and aparate to my parent's house, you take down the anti- apparition wards here and I'll meet you there.”
James threw lily her wand and headed for the stars
“James where are you going” lily screamed
“I can't risk you, I'll grab Harry, you take down the wards and leave, I love you lils” and with that James ran up the stairs. He felt the wards go down as the door slammed open. He knew Lily must've left already because the footsteps were already heading up the stairs behind him. When James reached the end of the hall he threw open Harry's door and placed his wand on the table and went to grab him, but Voldemort was already there and when James turned to grab his wand, Voldemort beat him to it.
“Avada Kedavra”
The spell hit Harry straight into his forehead but before James could react, the green light bounced back and hit Voldemort and the man dropped. Harry started to scream and once James knew his baby was alive, he grabbed his wand and aperated away, not even checking if the man on the floor was dead.
When James landed in front of his parent's house, the lights weren't on and when he went inside, his worst fear was confirmed because the house was empty and Lily wasn't there. Double-checking with a quick charm, it revealed that no one was there other than himself and Harry and with that, he aperated to Sirius and Remus’s cottage and entered without knocking. Inside sat Remus in an armchair, reading by the fire, and Padfoot laying by his feet. At his entrance, both men looked up.
“James,” Remus says, putting his book down and standing up as Sirius transforms.
“What's wrong,” Sirius asks, seeing the pain on James's face
James placed Harry in Sirius's arms. “He came and lily was supposed to aperate to my parents while I grabbed harry. He tried to kill Harry but the spell bounced off him and hit Voldemort back. I think he is dead, but lily never made it to my parents. I have to go back and find her” and with that James operated back to Godric's Hollow.
When he arrived, he saw someone standing in the window. He sighed in relief and ran into the house but when he entered, he saw someone standing over the body of his dead wife. The man turned and took off his death eater mask. “Peter,” James says and for a moment everything is silent, but the silence is soon broken by the sound of multiple people aperating behind them causing both men to turn around and within moments, peter was stupefied by Alastor Moody and James collapses on the ground, holding his dead wife's body in his arms, his body shaking as he sobbed.
Around him, Aurors and order members were collecting evidence and sending patronesses. After being questioned, Sirius and Remus rushed over to James' side, pulling the man off his wife so the Aurors could run some tests and take the body away. At his best friend's touch, James immediately jumps up. “Where is Harry?” James screams at the two.
“He is with my brother,” Sirius says while the two men bring him over to the Aurors
James stopped, his heart racing. “Reggie is alive,” he asked
Sirius turned to him, confused. “How do you know my brother”
Remus knew. He knew about James and Regulus. How they were together before he died. That's how he ended up with lily. James always had feelings for Lily, but when he met Regulus, James fell in love. He tried to get regulus to switch sides, but it didn't work. A few months after Regulus got the mark, the death eaters killed Marlene and her family, and Dorcas, James was heartbroken. He couldn't look Regulus in the eye anymore and they broke up. Even though he was a death eater, James lost it when it was announced that Regulus died, but at that time, James and Lily were already engaged and Lily was pregnant with harry.
Little to James' knowledge, a few months back, Regulus found Remus and Sirius and explained his “fake death” and what he did. He started helping the order, telling them what he knew about the death eaters and his time there. Regulus wanted to reach out to James, tell him what he did and how he switched sides, but Remus stopped him. James was finally happy and Remus couldn't let Regulus ruin his friend's marriage. So Regulus stayed hidden in Sirius and Remus's cottage. They planned to tell everyone who didn't know about Regulus' help after Voldemort was dead because if anyone found out he was alive, he would have a huge target on his back.
“We will talk about this later,” Remus says as he leads James back towards the Aurors so they could get the story.
