Chapter 2
The three men sat in the Aurors office as James told the Auror about the events that had occurred that night. They all couldn't believe what had unfolded that night. Not only was their friend Lily dead, but the fourth member of the group and their friend of 10 years was the traitor that no one saw coming.
After hours of talking and interrogation, Sirius and Remus took James back to their home. When they arrived, they found Regulus asleep on the couch, with a sleeping Harry on top of him. Sirius took the baby off his brother and put him in the crib they had for when Harry stayed over.
When he came downstairs, he found Remus in the kitchen making tea. James sat next to a half-awake Regulus on the couch. Sirius could tell James was pissed by the look on his face, but something told Sirius that it wasn't about Lily's death or Peter's betrayal. “So,” Sirius said as Remus brought in 4 mugs.
“Explain” James screamed at regulus
Sirius was confused but one look at Remus and he knew he was the only one. Remus clearly knew something and Sirius was a little hurt that his soon-to-be husband didn't trust him enough to tell him. “Yea,” Sirius said “I too would like to know what the fuck is going on here” Remus put a hand on Sirius's arm.
“Calm down love, let them explain,” he says, rubbing his fiance's arm
Regulus started tearing up. “I didn't want to Jamie, you have to trust me”
“Jamie?” Sirius whispered into Remus's ear but was given a classic Remus look that said ‘shut up and listen’ so he turned back to the group and stayed quiet. It was amazing how much control his fiance had over him.
“If you didn't want to then why didn't you accept my help” James replied, tears started to form in his eyes
“After Sirius left, everything fell onto me. I had to be the heir. I was the only one left” regulus said
Sirius cringed inside. He left his brother there. Maybe if he stayed, his brother would have been free. Or maybe he should have taken his brother with him when he left. He was sure the potters would have taken care of him as well.
“That's not an excuse Reggie” James cried
“I know” he replied “I know and I'm sorry. I chose the wrong side but I was so angry after Sirius left. It was before I got to know you when I said I would take it, by the time I was given the mark, I had no choice, I was too far in. I was just gonna stay on the sidelines and wait for you guys to win, but then the prophecy was made and I realized that I couldn't wait and let them kill you and your baby so I came to my brother and started helping”
James paused for a second, taking it all in. “How did you help? Did you know about peter” he asked
“Yes, but I didn't know you had made him your secret keeper! No one told me. But it was the first thing I told dumbledore when I switched but he said he knew and that he had it under control”
“He knew,” the other three boys said
“I can't believe that man” Sirius whispers
“I gave all the information I knew to the order and became a spy along with someone else but I wasn't told who. Dumbledore gave me a task to complete that he told me would kill me but I did it because my death meant you and your family got to live Jamie, and all I wanted to do was make you happy because I love you”
“So if you were supposed to die, how are you here now,” James asks
“I'm not sure” regulus replied
Regulus then went on to explain the Horcruxes and how Kreacher brought regulus back to Sirius and Remus's where the three men preceded to kill the Horcrux just days before.
After digesting the story, James immediately turned to Remus, the anger back on his face. “And your money! How could you! You knew he was alive and you sat there comforting me over his death, letting me believe that the man I loved was dead!” he screamed
“I'm sorry” Remus said calmly “ you were finally happy again and lily was pregnant and you were engaged, I couldn't let you do that to you or lily”
James said nothing. He knew Remus was right. He loved Lily and he would never have left her, baby or not. After a moment of silence, Sirius spoke
“Now I have a question” he turned to Remus “when the fuck were you, my bloody fiance, gonna tell me my best friend and brother were fucking”
“Fiance!” James asked
