Monokuma stared at the screen, dumbfounded. He was stuck here? With these people?
Natsuki: “S-So this is for real…?”
Otto: “It appears so…”
Monika: “Well, I think we should go and explore tomorrow, it’s a minute till 10.”
Colin: “Y-Yeah, but where are the cabins?”
Ryoma: “I think I passed them earlier, follow me.”
*Ding dong, bing bong*
Kirameka: "Ahem, this is an announcement. It is officially 10pm, and it is now nighttime. Please, head to your cabin! Sleep tight, campers! And remember, don’t let the bed bugs bite~"
The group started to follow Ryoma, silent. Monokuma was dazed. He was a camper? Not a camp counselor. He felt despair, in a way, but he didn’t know how he felt about it. He shook it off and gripped his Kirapad tightly. Eventually, they reached an area with 17 cabins, which were spaced out. There were plaques with names, and Monokuma wandered around until he found his. He opened the door and walked in. There was a bed, a small TV, and a laptop sitting on a dresser. He crawled into the bed and pulled the covers over himself. He gazed out the window and sighed.
He didn’t know how, but he knew what he had to do.
He had to escape. One way or another.
Kirameka: "Rise and shine, campers! It is officially 7am! That means that nighttime is officially over! Get ready to greet another beautiful day!”
There was a click, and the sound of the buzzing stopped. Monokuma sat up and rubbed his eyes. He jumped down from the bed and noticed a piece of paper slipping through the door. He grabbed it.
*Gather in the mess hall! Please and thank you!
-Colin*
Monokuma: (“I mean, I guess it wouldn’t hurt.”)
Monokuma grabbed the doorknob and twisted it. He left the cabin and looked around. He saw Colin slipping a note under a door, Fred at his heels. The two were chatting, though Monokuma couldn’t hear them. He watched them before turning and walking to the mess hall. He sighed. It wasn’t hot or cold, which he was thankful for. The black in his fur always kept him a little too warm during summer. He looked up at the sky and sighed as he opened the door to the mess hall. He looked up and was met with Bert, Butters, Charlie, Felix, Julian, Kenny, Max, and Monika. Felix looked at him and smiled.
Felix: “Monokuma!”
Monokuma waved at him.
Natsuki: “Could you move? You’re in the way.”
Monokuma looked back with a glare but shuffled to the side nonetheless. Natsuki passed and walked to Monika, who smiled at her.
Monika: “Hey, Natsuki!”
Natsuki just nodded in acknowledgment. She stared at the door, as though waiting for someone. Monika looked at her before chuckling and turning to talk to Kenny, who spoke back, though nobody could understand him.
Felix: “So, Monokuma, I assume we’ll start exploring once everyone’s here.”
Monokuma: “Sounds good to me!”
Julian: “Um, hello? Are you forgetting something?”
Felix: “Huh?”
Julian: “He isn’t to be trusted. You heard what Ryoma said. He’s probably a traitor or something!”
Monokuma: “Hey, shut up, Micro Penis!”
Max: “...”
Max: “What?”
Butters and Kenny were laughing, and Max looked at them in horror.
Julian rolled his eyes.
Julian: “I’m not wrong. He’s untrustworthy. I say we lock him up somewhere.”
Bert: “Don’t you think that a little…?”
Monika: “Overdramatic?”
Bert: “Yeah, that.”
Natsuki: “I kind of agree with Julian. If he’s hosted killing games before, who says he wouldn’t do it again?”
Felix: “Oh, come on! He hasn’t done anything yet!”
Julian: “Yeah, yet. He’s probably helping Kirameka, and if not that, he’s plotting a murder!”
Felix scoffed.
Monokuma: “Ahem, may I say something?”
They turned to him, Julian quirking a brow as he did. Monokuma put his paws behind his back.
Monokuma: “While yes, I have hosted killing games and enjoyed most, if not all, I can assure you, I have nothing to do with this one, and I wouldn’t plot a murder because I’d be everyone’s suspect. So you don’t have to worry about me. Puhuhu…”
Monokuma looked at the entrance and realized that the rest of the people were at the door, watching in confusion.
Ryoma: “How do we know you’re not lying?”
Monokuma: “Am I the type to lie?”
He kicked his foot innocently; Ryoma rolled his eyes and leaned against the wall.
Rodrick: “So last night one of you said something about exploring?”
Monika: “Yup! We have a map, but it wouldn’t hurt to get used to our surroundings!”
Otto pulled out his Kirapad and pulled up something. He froze and blinked before biting his lip, as though he were trying to stifle laughter. Everyone looked at him in confusion before they all pulled out their Kirapads. Monokuma pulled up the map, and…
Max: “Did Kirameka draw this?"
Kirameka: "Yup, yup!"
Max: "GAH!"
He whipped around and stared at Kirameka, who was now sitting on a stool behind him. She giggled, kicking her feet.
Kirameka: "Did I scare ya? Hehe!"
Otto crossed his arms.
Otto: "What do you want?"
Kirameka: "Hey, you don't have to be so rude! I was just trying to say good morning to my campers!"
Colin: "But didn't you already?"
Kirameka: "Those are prerecorded messages, silly!"
Rodrick: "Okay, anyone a little freaked out by how normal she's acting? Because I am."
Kirameka: "Huh?"
Rodrick: "Just yesterday you were telling us to kill each other and throwing spears at us, and now you're acting like our friend!"
Monokuma: ("He's right. Even I never acted this friendly...")
Kirameka: "Okay, I didn't tell you to kill each other, I just told you you could if you wanted to leave. And I didn't throw the spear, the machine shot it out from my command! Hehehe...!"
Rodrick: "Get the fuck out of here."
Kirameka: "WHAT!?!"
Kirameka stared at Rodrick before sniffling and dabbing at her eyes.
Kirameka: :*sniffle* F-Fine, since my presence is so hated! Boohoohoo!"
And with that, she sprung behind the stool and was gone. Rodrick glared at the stool before looking around.
Max: "You...really need to watch your language."
Rodrick rolled his eyes but smiled.
Rodrick: "Okay, old man."
Max froze, looked at himself, and huffed. He looked at Rodrick, who was now conversing with Fred. He then turned to Monokuma.
Max: "Am I getting old?"
Monokuma sniggered.
Monokuma: "Of course!"
Max sighed and leaned on the wall. Monokuma laughed and then nudged Felix, who was looking down at him.
Felix: "Hey, he's not old! That would mean I'm old."
Monokuma: "..."
Monokuma: ("Who's gonna tell him?")
Otto: "Ahem."
Everyone turned to him and saw him pulling out a whiteboard from the closet. He moved out of the way as Colin and Fred eagerly joined him.
Monokuma: "Wha...?"
Colin: "We spent all night planning and making this!"
Fred: "Well, not all night."
Otto: "You see, this is a killing game. So I'm offering you guys to join this group. It's just for us to try and keep everyone safe...So yeah."
Fred: "If you want to join, say so right now! It also costs, so pay up."
Otto looked at Fred with a quirked brow.
Otto: "It's free."
Fred: "Damn..."
Everyone stayed quiet for a moment, and then Natsuki stepped up. She stared at the ground, face red.
Natsuki: "I'd like to join."
Colin: "Alright! Anyone else?"
Fred looked at Rodrick.
Fred: "How about you?"
Rodrick: "Uh...Sure?"
Fred: "Yes!"
Rodrick wandered towards them, and Natsuki followed, still staring at the ground.
Otto smiled at them, and Monokuma thought it over. Now the trio was the quintet. But what if...?
Monokuma: "I'll join, and so will Felix!"
Felix: "I will? I mean, I will!"
The quintet stared at them and beamed.
Colin: "Ooh! Now we're a..."
Otto: "Septet."
Colin: "We're a septet!"
Monokuma and Felix walked over to them, and they looked at the others.
Fred: "Well, should we schedule a meeting?"
He had them huddled in a corner, now whispering.
Colin: "Tonight at 9:30? In here?"
Otto: "Sure, and, why are we whispering?"
Fred: "Because it makes it seem more secretive and cool!"
Rodrick: "Okay, so 9:30 in here."
Felix: "Sounds good."
Monokuma: "Yup!"
They looked at Natsuki, who paused with wide eyes.
Natsuki: "Uh..."
Otto: "If you can't make it we can reschedule."
Natsuki: "Um...Yeah, sounds good."
Otto straightened back up, attempting to crack his back. Monokuma chuckled.
Monokuma: ("Ha! He's old!")
Monika: "Hey, Natsuki!"
Natsuki turned and looked at Monika, who gestured to the kitchen.
Monika: "Do you think you could bake us some muffins? I'm hungry, and I wouldn't doubt the others are."
Natsuki nodded and went into the kitchens. Then Monika looked around.
Monika: "I should let you know right here, right now. If any of you hurt Natsuki, I will get revenge."
Colin: "But none of us will kill, right?"
Otto: "...Right."
Colin furrowed his eyebrows, and Fred grabbed him by the shoulders.
Fred: "Hey! How about you and the other kids go help Natsuki in the kitchen?"
Colin looked confused and looked at Butters, Preston, and Kenny. Butters and Kenny looked up at Max, who gently nudged them with a nod. Preston looked around before walking to the kitchen, the other three following. Colin looked back at the group before slipping into the kitchen. Fred watched the door, making sure it was closed. Once it was, he whipped his head towards Monika, who stared at him with narrowed eyes.
Fred: "What the bloody hell was that?"
Monika: "What, I'm not allowed to warn you guys?"
Fred's shoulders rose and his hands balled into fists. Max took a step forward, arms folded.
Max: "Well, none of us are going to kill, so-"
Monika started to giggle, and Max's eyes narrowed.
Monika: "You really think none of us will snap? I mean, someone who's hosted killing games in the past is in this very room. You really think no one will die? Really? You must have a lot of hope!"
Monokuma watched her, not knowing how to feel. He loved despair, but this wasn't despair. He didn't know what it was, but he didn't like it.
Julian: "Wait, I thought you were on the bear's side earlier? Why are you switching up?"
Monika: "Oh, I'm not on anyone's side! I'm on mine, and that's it."
Bert: "But surely none of us will actually snap to the point of murder, right?"
Monika's giggling grew louder, and everyone started to back away.
Monika: "AHAHAHA!"
Rodrick: "She's gone off the deep end!"
Julian: "Oh dear god, we should lock her up!"
Monika: "We're human. Of course, it'll happen! No way to prevent it! But Natsuki and I will live! We'll survive and leave the rest of you to die~ But don't tell her that part, she doesn't know that. Ah, poor, sweet Natsuki, joining that dumb, ignorant little club of yours!"
Her head whipped around towards Otto now, a grin plastered on her face.
Monika: "I swear, if any of you tell Natsuki about this, I'll murde-"
Fred went flying at her, latching onto her ponytail and pulling.
Felix: "What the fuck is happening!?!"
Fred: "CALL IT STUPID AGAIN, I DARE YOU!"
Monika screamed and started to claw at him. Felix began to run towards them to get them to quit, but a tentacle shot in front of him, knocking him over onto his butt.
Otto: "Fred! What if the kids hear you?"
Kirameka: "Don't worry, they can't!"
Otto whipped around and tried to send a tentacle at Kirameka, but Monokuma and Bert latched onto it.
Monokuma: "Don't!"
Bert: "You saw what she did last night!"
Monika: "GET THE HELL OFF OF ME YOU-"
Fred pushed her down and started to stomp on her. Julian and Max tried to pull him away, but he shook them off.
Kirameka: "They can't hear what's going on in here, though you can hear what's going on in there! Isn't that smart!"
Before anyone could respond, Monika took out a pen and started attempting to stab Fred's foot.
Julian: "Holy shit!"
Rodrick: "She's batshit crazy!"
Otto sent another tentacle flying, wrapping around Fred and pulling him back quickly. Fred shouted. Monika jumped up and stared at him before looking at the pen. Her eyes widened.
Monika: "I..."
She grew quiet.
Monika: "I'm sorry. I don't think I'll be exploring today. Tell Natsuki I didn't feel good."
She quickly walked out of the mess hall, hair covering her face, though Monokuma could've sworn he saw some tears.
Kirameka: "Aw, I thought that would've been way more climactic..."
Everyone was taking deep breaths, eyes wide. Save for Kirameka, who pouted.
Charlie: "What...just happened?"
Toby: "I have...no idea."
Felix got up off the floor and looked around.
Felix: "I'm surprised everything's still in place..."
Bert: "Should someone go talk to her?"
Ryoma: "Let her have some space. I don't think she's in the right mindset to talk to us."
Kirameka: "This is boring..."
Rodrick: "Why, because nobody's killing each other?"
Kirameka: "Precisely!"
Fred: "You're sick."
Kirameka: "In the good or bad way?"
Fred: "What the bloody hell do you think?"
Kirameka: "Hm, maybe I should make it a rule that nobody's allowed to call me sick and all..."
Monokuma: "Hey! Even I wasn't that cruel!"
Kirameka: "Just kidding~! Hehehe!"
Rodrick: "Oh, go fuck yourself with a chainsaw."
Kirameka: "Eek! You guys are so vulgar! *sniffle* So vulgar! Especially for a teenager!"
The door to the kitchen creaked open, and Kirameka sprung behind a stool and disappeared. Natsuki carried a tray of muffins and looked around. The kids followed her. She froze.
Natsuki: "Where's Monika?"
Everyone grew silent.
Natsuki: "Why's everyone so pale...?"
Bert: "She, uh, didn't feel good."
Natsuki furrowed her brows.
Natsuki: "Oh, should I go check on her?"
Max: "No, I think she's alright. You can eat with us and then give her a muffin, though!"
Natsuki: "Alright..."
She sat down at the table, and the rest of the septet sat next to her. The others sat close, as well. She went to hand a muffin to Monokuma, but he shook his head.
Monokuma: "I'd eat it if I could, but I'm a robot, so yeah..."
Natsuki scoffed.
Natsuki: "Well you could've told me that! Guess I'll just give the extra to Monika since she isn't feeling good."
Natsuki picked up hers, though she didn't bite into it. She watched the others, her expression anxious.
Rodrick: "Hey, this is better than my mom's cooking!"
Butters: "Yeah! It's delicious!"
Kenny: "Mrph!"
Julian: "Yeah, good job."
Toby: "It's really sweet."
Natsuki looked at him with a frown.
Natsuki: "You don't like it?"
Toby: "That was meant to be a compliment..."
Otto: "Where did you learn to bake?"
Her eyes widened, and she looked around wildly.
Natsuki: "I'm, uh, self-taught."
Charlie: "Magnificent! You have great skills!"
Natsuki giggled and looked away, a light blush dusting her face.
Monokuma pouted.
Monokuma: "I wish I could eat..."
Felix laughed and turned to Natsuki.
Felix: "This reminds me of the muffins Rosemary would make. Except, honestly, I like these better."
Monokuma: "Ooh, who's that? You're wife~?"
Felix laughed.
Felix: "No, she was my friend's wife."
Butters: "Do you have a wife?"
Felix paused, staring at Butters. He looked like he was at a loss for words.
Monokuma: ("I might have to help him out here...")
Monokuma: "BEAR!"
Everyone looked out the window, eyes wide.
Julian: "There's no bear out there?"
Monokuma: "Oh, sorry, saw my reflection! Puhuhuhu..."
They glared at him before going back to chatting. Monokuma idly talked, he more so listened. Eventually, they finished, and Otto stood up.
Otto: "Should we explore?"
Natsuki pulled out her Kirapad.
Natsuki: "It's 8:30, so we have time."
Fred: "Alright, everyone get your Kirapads ready! We'll split up into groups of four! Me, Otto, Natsuki, and Colin. Monokuma, Felix, Julian, and Rodrick. Bert, Butters, Kenny, and Max. And, last but not least, Toby, Charlie, Ryoma, and Preston. Everybody meet back up at the fountain, and we'll talk about what we find there!"
Everybody pulled out their Kirapads and wandered towards their respectful people.
Monokuma: "Okay, follow me!"
He pulled up the map and snorted. It was still hilarious. The small group wandered out of the building. They wandered right, towards the changing rooms.
Julian: "So, there are some changing rooms? For what? It's not like any of us have anything to change into. Which is why I'm extremely thankful for the washing machine and showers in our cabins."
Monokuma: "Oh?"
Julian: "Yeah, the bathroom has all of that. Which, I guess you don't need any of that, but..."
The four looked around.
Felix: "Should we go into the forest?"
Rodrick: "I mean, I guess?"
Julian started for the forest and headed straight for a tree. He looked at it but didn't stop. And then he thwacked his head on it.
Julian: "GAH!"
Monokuma: "What was that about?"
Julian: "Remember. Used to be dead..."
Monokuma: "Oh."
Felix: "Is that a fence?"
Rodrick: "Hold up, let me climb it."
Kirameka: "I wouldn't suggest that!"
They whipped around, eyes wide.
Rodrick: "Okay, for one. Quit sneaking up on us. And why not?"
Kirameka: "Just try! Hehehe..."
Rodrick thought before shrugging. He grabbed it, and...
Rodrick: "AHHH!"
Felix: "Rodrick!"
Kirameka laughed, slapping her knee.
Kirameka: "Dumbie! Can't believe you fell for it!"
Rodrick: "Y-You're an asshole!"
Kirameka: "Hehe!"
Monokuma: "You alright, puhuhu..."
Rodrick glared at Monokuma before looking at Julian.
Rodrick: "I'm going back to my cabin..."
Rodrick limped away, and Julian patted him on the shoulder as he left.
Kirameka: "He's dumb, ain't he?"
Julian: "Just go. We don't need you here."
Kirameka: "Why are you guys so mean to me..."
She sprung behind a bush, and they turned to the fence.
Felix: "No way in, no way out."
Julian: "Yeah..."
Monokuma studied it.
Monokuma: "Do you think you could throw me over?"
Felix stepped closer to it and shook his head.
Felix: "Way too high. Like, higher than the trees."
Monokuma: "Damn..."
The three moved along, looking around. They stopped.
Felix: "That's a path and a gate."
He hurried towards the gate and touched it. It wasn't electric, so he tried to open it but to no avail.
Felix: "I wonder why it's closed off."
Monokuma shrugged.
Monokuma: "When I host, I have blocked off areas, after every trial, I open one up."
Julian looked at him with narrowed eyes.
Julian: "Interesting."
Monokuma: "Hey! I'm not the host or anything this time. It's unbearable that you hate me so much!"
Felix took in a deep breath, and Julian pinched his temple.
Julian: "Never make a joke like that again. Please."
Monokuma: "Yeah, that was slightly embearissing!"
Julian sighed and shook his head. They all kept going until they saw the cabins.
Felix: "I reckon we should go back now."
Julian quirked an eyebrow.
Julian: "Reckon? Really?"
Felix: "...Yeah?"
Julian: "God, you're so American..."
Felix looked at him in confusion before they started to head back to the fountain. Once they got there, they sat down on it. Eventually, the other groups joined.
Fred: "So, we, uh, didn't find much."
All the others said the same thing, save for Felix.
Felix: "We found a gate, though it's locked tight. Also, the fences are electric. Don't try to climb them. Rodrick learned the hard way."
Fred chuckled at that before looking at Monokuma.
Fred: "You used to host killing games. What do you think it is?"
Monokuma explained what he had told Felix and Julian. Colin scratched his chin.
Butters: "So we'll probably never see what's behind it?"
Monokuma grew quiet. He hated to admit it, but he didn't want the killings to start. But he knew they would eventually.
Max looked at Monokuma before smiling at Butters.
Max: "Never."
Kenny: "Mrph mrph mrph."
Kenny placed a hand on Butters' shoulder, who beamed at the two.
Butters: "Well, that's good. I bet there's nothing fun over there anyways!"
Kirameka: "God, this fluff!"
She fake gagged. Everybody glared at her, hatred burning in their eyes.
Kirameka: "Aw, come on! I haven't done anything; I'm innocent, I swear!"
Otto: "What do you want?"
Kirameka: "Oh, nothing, just wanted to be included!"
Otto blinked at her.
Otto: "Well, I'm about to cook lunch, so goodbye."
Kirameka: "Damn...Anyone else leaving?"
Everyone started to walk away, and Kirameka pouted.
Kirameka: "Wait, I have something to tell you!"
Everyone turned, and Kirameka held out coins.
Kirameka: "Take them, they're Mekacoins! You can use them in the MekaMeka Machine and get prizes!"
Everyone took one and studied theirs.
Natsuki: "I'll give Monika and Rodrick theirs."
She took two extra and was about to shove them into a tiny pocket.
Otto: "Do you have any bigger pockets? I could put them in mine."
Natsuki looked at him and handed him the two hesitantly. He shoved them in his pocket.
Kirameka: "That's it! Buh-bye!"
She sprang off, and everyone started to disperse.
Monokuma: ("Looks like I have some free time. Um, I guess I could hang out with Felix, but let me find the MekaMeka Machine first.")
He looked around and found one in the mess hall's entrance. He put his one Mekacoin in there, and out popped a corny tie.
Monokuma: "Oh...Well, that was a waste.
Monokuma searched for Felix and found him lounging outside of his cabin. Monokuma ran to him.
Monokuma: "Hey!"
Felix looked up and smiled.
Felix: "Hey, Monokuma! Watcha doing?"
Monokuma: "Not much, just wanted to hang out. I'm bored."
Felix: "Oh, yeah, sure man!"
Felix told Monokuma about Bon's Burgers, and Monokuma half listened.
Monokuma: ("Oh, I have that tie!") "Hold up, I gotcha something!"
Monokuma handed him the tie, and Felix accepted it with a smile.
Felix: "Thanks, man!"
Monokuma: "No problemo!"
Felix looked at it.
Felix: "Reminds me of a tie my friend Jack got me once."
Monokuma: "Oh?"
Felix: "Yeah, except it was yellow and green instead of yellow and blue."
Monokuma: "So...What's Jack like? How did you meet?"
Felix looked at him before looking back down at the tie.
Felix: "We met in college. We had the same ideas and goals, so we teamed up. Decided to become business partners. We opened up Bon's Burgers together."
Monokuma: "Do you miss him?"
Felix stayed quiet for a moment.
Felix: "Yeah, yeah I do..."
Monokuma: "I'll admit, I don't have many people that are close to me. I mean, I have my kids, but I dunno..."
Felix: "Do you not love them?"
Monokuma looked at him and then at the ground.
Monokuma: "It's...complicated."
Felix: "..."
He pulled out his Kirapad as it buzzed and gaped.
Felix: "We've been talking for two hours!"
Monokuma: "Damn, you sure can talk about Bob's Burgers."
Felix: "Bon's Burgers."
Monokuma: "Right."
Felix: "Otto just messaged me. Lunch is ready."
Monokuma nodded and stood.
Monokuma: "Let's go."
The two left for the mess hall, and once they arrived, they saw everybody, excluding Monika, sitting at the table.
Colin: "Ah, there you guys are!"
Felix and Monokuma sat beside Otto. Otto had made everybody chicken fried steaks and mashed potatoes. Monokuma watched them eat with a pout. Why'd he have to be a robot? The others ate, chatting happily. Monokuma listened, occasionally joining the conversations. By the time everyone finished, it was 12:30. Everyone stood up, and Monokuma realized he had even more free time.
Monokuma: ("I don't really want to spend time with anybody...I think I'll just take a nap.")
Monokuma walked to his cabin. He jumped onto his bed and pulled the covers over himself. He closed his eyes and slipped off into sleep.
Monokuma rubbed his eyes. Knocking was heard at the door, and he quirked a brow. He stumbled towards the door and opened it to see Preston.
Preston: "I was sent here to retrieve you for dinner."
Monokuma: "Uh, okay?"
Preston turned and left. Monokuma yawned and walked outside. He closed the door behind him and headed for the mess hall.
Colin: "Monokuma!"
Monokuma looked up and saw Colin running towards him.
Colin: "Don't forget about our meeting."
Monokuma blinked in confusion before his eyes widened.
Monokuma: "Oh, yeah. Uh, it's at 9:30, right?"
Monokuma: "What time is it now?"
Colin whipped out his Kirapad and looked at it.
Colin: "8:30."
Monokuma nodded, and the two entered the mess hall. Once again, everyone, save for Monika, was there.
Natsuki: "I'm worried about Monika; she won't open the door or anything..."
Otto: "She's probably asleep since she's sick."
Monokuma: ("Wow, I'm surprised no one's told her about the breakdown, puhuhu...")
Natsuki gave a nervous hum, but Otto patted her shoulder and gave her a smile. She grinned back before looking at the door.
Natsuki: "Oh, hey Monokuma."
Felix turned at waved him over.
Felix: "Come on, I know you can't eat, but I still want you to be included!"
Monokuma tilted his head.
Monokuma: "Why?"
Felix paused, staring at Monokuma.
Felix: "Because that's what friends do."
Monokuma: "Oh...Yeah, friends do that, don't they?"
Julian: "Probably never had a friend..."
Monokuma heard Julian mutter that and looked up to see Max elbow him.
Max: "Quit being rude."
Monokuma's ears drooped. Did these people really view him as a friend?
...
Did he view them as his friends?
Charlie: "Dinner's ready!"
Toby carried out a casserole and everyone perked up. They got their plates and dug in, whilst Monokuma watched. Eventually, everyone finished and resorted to chatting. Monokuma felt himself start to doze off, but then something disturbed him.
Kirameka: "Hello campers~!"
People groaned and glared at her. She climbed onto the stool and stood there.
Kirameka: "So far, no killings have happened!"
Colin: "See!"
Butters: "Take that!"
Kenny: "Mrph mrph mrph!"
Preston: "Yeah, bitch!"
Max: "Hey, language!"
Kirameka: "So, how about I spice it up a little~"
A collective ding was heard from the Kirapads, and everyone looked at them.
Kirameka: "Ladies and gentlemen, this is our first motive! Here are headphones, which you can keep! Hehehe~"
And with that, she left once again.
Monokuma put on a pair of earbuds, which Kirameka had been gracious enough to give to him instead of the headphones. He clicked on the notification. On the screen, there was a picture of him and the Monokubs.
Kirameka: "Hello, and welcome to our first motive! How exciting!"
Kirameka: "Ah, such a happy little family of psychotic bears. One poor single dad and five little cubs! Must be hard! But hey, they're happy! I think."
Kirameka: "But, oh, what's this?"
Kirameka: "It seems they've gotten into an accident...Poor little cubs..."
Kirameka: "What kind of accident. Well, maybe you should try and find out, Monokuma~"
The video stopped, and Monokuma sat there, conflicted. He didn't really love them. At least he didn't think he did. He looked up and took out his earbuds. Everyone stared at their screens, and that's when the panic began.
Rodrick: "Greg!"
Fred: "What the bloody hell!?!"
Ryoma: "Shuichi..."
Everyone was shouting, eyes wide. Monokuma watched them, scratching his chin.
Julian turned to Monokuma and grabbed him by his neck. He slammed him into the wall.
Julian: "WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO TO THEM?"
Max: "Julian!"
Monokuma: "D-Don't you mean Kirameka?"
Julian: "No, I mean you! You looked up from your Kirapad like it was nothing! What the hell did you do them?"
Julian's voice broke a bit as he said the last sentence. He looked at Monokuma, and Monokuma couldn't tell whether the expression on Julian's face was rage, desperation, or both.
Julian's breath hitched, and he dropped Monokuma. He ran out of the mess hall. Max ran after him, calling his name. Monokuma heard a whimper and looked at Colin, who was sniffling.
Fred: "Hey, you alright?"
Colin: "Y-Yeah..."
Otto: "...Well, it's almost time for the meeting."
Everyone nodded and dispersed, save for the septet. Everyone sat down at a table, looking particularly pale. Monokuma sat in between Felix and Natsuki.
Monokuma: "...So are we gonna sit here like a bunch o' mimes or what?"
Otto: "Well, first order of business, keeping everyone safe..."
Rodrick: "How the hell are we gonna do that? I mean, there's an actual motive now! I don't know if I should even trust you guys!"
Colin: "O-Otto, I'm scared..."
Otto: "..."
Monokuma: ("God, can't help but feel bad for these bastards...")
Fred: "What can we do? At first, it seemed easy, but now..."
A sob was heard, and everyone turned their heads to look a Natsuki. She covered her face, shoulders shaking.
Otto: "Natsuki..."
Natsuki: "I-I don't wanna die! I don't wanna kill, b-but my friends..."
She sobbed harder, and Monokuma was at a loss for words. What the hell was happening? He absolutely loved despair, but this...
This was heartbreaking.
Natsuki curled in on herself as she sobbed, and Otto stood. He moved around the table and sat beside Natsuki. He placed a hand on her shoulder while a tentacle handed her a tissue. She took it with shaky hands and blew her nose.
Otto: "Don't be scared, any of you. I won't let anybody die. Whether that means I have to trap somebody, I will not let anything bad happen."
Natsuki: "...Promise?"
Everyone, including Monokuma, nodded.
Rodrick: "So, if anyone starts acting suspicious, we tell you?"
Otto: "That works."
Colin: "Alright!"
Fred: "Will do!"
They then turned to Monokuma and Felix, who both nodded. After that, they sat there chatting about their lives before the killing game, save for Felix, who stayed quiet other than the occasional question here and there.
*Ding dong, bing bong*
Kirameka: "Ahem, this is an announcement. It is officially 10pm, and it is now nighttime. Please, head to your cabin! Sleep tight, campers! And remember, don’t let the bed bugs bite~"
Colin: "Wow, it's really nighttime already?"
Otto: "It appears so."
Rodrick: "Well, I'm gonna head to bed. Night, losers."
Rodrick stood up and stretched before walking out.
Otto: "Same time tomorrow?"
Fred: "Sounds good! I'll tell Rodrick that.
The others stood and left, leaving Monokuma and Felix alone.
Felix: "...I think this will work."
Monokuma: "...Yeah."
Felix got up and left and Monokuma followed. Once they reached the cabins, Monokuma looked up at Felix.
Monokuma: "Goodnight."
Felix: "Goodnight..."
Monokuma watched him go, brows furrowed, but he didn't say anything. He went to his cabin and crawled into bed. He yawned, curling up and pulling a blanket over him.
*Ding dong, bing bong*
Kirameka: "Rise and shine, campers! It is officially 7am! That means that nighttime is officially over! Get ready to greet another beautiful day!”
Monokuma opened his eyes and listened to the click as the speakers turned off. He rolled out of bed and stumbled into the bathroom, pulling up a stool. He stood in front of the mirror and fixed his fur. Once he was done he heard a buzz from his Kirapad.
Felix: *Come down to the mess hall, breakfast is almost ready.*
Monokuma looked up from it and carried on. He walked out of the cabin and looked around. Once again, the perfect temperature.
Once he arrived at the mess hall, he was unsurprised to not see Monika there. Natsuki looked worried, fiddling with her thumbs.
Bert: "Don't worry, I'm sure she's alright."
Natsuki: "But what if...?"
Toby: "She's just sick."
Charlie: "Yeah, she'll be better in no time!"
Natsuki put her chin in her hand and rested her arm on the table.
Monokuma: "Where's Felix?"
Otto: "He, Butters, and Kenny are making hashbrowns. At least that's what I think Kenny said."
Julian: "I don't see how you make anything out of that."
Otto shrugged and got back to writing in a book. Monokuma watched him in confusion. He walked towards him and saw that he was writing down strategies to keep everything safe, with the occasional math and doodles in the margins. Monokuma crawled into the seat beside him.
Monokuma: "Should we tell everyone else what we decided on last night?"
Otto thought before shaking his head.
Otto: "If they know they can't be suspicious, they'll just try to be sneakier."
Monokuma nodded.
Butters: "Breakfast is ready!"
People got their breakfast, and Monokuma once again watched them eat.
Julian: "So, how'd that meeting go."
Fred: "It went well."
Julian: "...So you're not going to tell us how you're going to keep us safe?"
Fred: "Nope."
Julian huffed and went back to eating. Monokuma chuckled, which made Julian narrow his eyes.
Max: "So, how did everyone sleep?"
Everyone said good, which he wouldn't doubt. Those beds were hella comfortable.
They kept chatting, except Monokuma actually made an effort to join in at times, which made Felix smile.
Eventually, it ended, and everyone got up to leave. Monokuma wondered over to Felix.
Felix: "Uh, want to go watch a movie or something?"
Monokuma: "Sure? I dunno, there isn't a lot to do here."
Felix: "Yeah..."
The two headed for Felix's cabin and entered. They looked through the movies in the bookshelf.
Felix: "All of these are marked as killing games..."
Monokuma: "Yeah, I think those might be my killing games..."
Felix: "Oh..."
Monokuma: "Hey, there's a chessboard in here!"
Felix looked at it and smiled.
Felix: "That'll do!"
The two sat across each other on the ground. Monokuma set up the board, and the two played for hours. They both were horrible at it.
Felix: "DAMN IT-"
A knock on the door cut him off, and they turned their heads. Fred poked his head in with wide, terrified eyes. He sighed once he saw them.
Fred: "Everyone's been messaging you. I was worried you had...nevermind that. It's time for lunch."
Monokuma: ("He thought we died...Damn they must've been trying to contact us for a while.")
He quickly looked at his Kirapad. It was 12:30, and he saw messages from almost everybody. He didn't see one from Monika, which made sense.
Monokuma and Felix stood. Fred let them pass before following.
Fred: "So you guys were playing chess?"
Monokuma nodded.
Fred: "Bloody hell...for how long?"
Felix chuckled, rubbing his arm.
Felix: "Uh, awhile...heh..."
Fred shook his head with a smirk. Felix opened the door and let the other two enter first. He followed them once they entered, and they all walked into the mess hall.
Butters: "Hey! Where have you been?"
Natsuki: "Yeah, we've been worried sick!"
Monokuma: "We got really invested in chess, puhuhuhu..."
Preston: "This isn't a damned joke! We-"
Fred: "No, no, he's not lying. They were playing chess."
Ryoma: "Hm..."
Felix drug Monokuma towards the group, and Fred followed. They sat down, and everyone started eating their sandwiches.
Monokuma: ("Stupid people...Showing off their stupid digestive systems...Well, I'll show them.")
Then he noticed. Nobody was really talking. They all ate in silence. Monokuma sighed and waited for somebody to say something, but no one did. They all finished and left, leaving the group, who looked at each other, the tension still there.
Rodrick: "So, our meeting is the same time, right?"
Otto: "Yeah."
And with that, the group dispersed. Monokuma walked outside.
Monokuma: ("Well, it looks like I have some free time. Maybe I should talk to Natsuki? She's been on edge lately...")
Monokuma sought out Natsuki and found her sitting outside Monika's cabin, holding a sandwich.
Natsuki: "Monika...please answer..."
Monokuma: "Natsuki...?"
Natsuki looked up at him with a glare.
Natsuki: "Can't you see I'm busy?"
Monokuma: "I don't think she's going to answer."
Natsuki sighed and rested her chin on her knees.
Natsuki: "I'm really worried about her..."
Monokuma: "Have you tried messaging her?"
Natsuki: "Yeah, she won't even respond to those..."
Monokuma paused.
Monokuma: ("Surely Kirameka would unlock it if she had died...")
Natsuki: "Well, what do you wanna talk about?"
Monokuma: "Um, baking?"
Natsuki brightened up.
Natsuki: "Really?"
Monokuma: "Um, yeah?"
Natsuki sat up and instantly started rambling about baking. Monokuma sat across from her, growing tired. She wasn't showing any signs of stopping, and Monokuma sighed. Hours had passed, and he was trying to stop himself from dozing off. Their Kirapds buzzed, though Natsuki didn't seem to notice.
Monokuma: "Ahem."
Natsuki looked at him in confusion.
Monokuma: "I think it's time for dinner..."
Natsuki's eyes widened.
Natsuki: "I've been talking for that long?"
Monokuma: "...Yeah."
Natsuki looked at Kirapad.
Natsuki: "Oh, dinner will be ready in an hour. Still have been talking for about four hours, heh..."
Monokuma: "It's fine, puhuhu..."
Natsuki stood and so did Monokuma. They headed for the mess hall, just like yesterday. He sighed.
Monokuma: (The same thing will happen every day...Wouldn't be surprised if someone snapped...")
Natsuki: "I wonder what we're having tonight!"
Monokuma shrugged.
Monokuma: "Not like I can eat anyways."
Natsuki: "Hehe..."
They reached it and entered.
Felix: "Monokuma!"
Monokuma walked over to Felix and sat beside him. He sighed and Felix looked at him.
Felix: "You alright?"
Monokuma: "Oh, yeah."
Felix furrowed his brows but said nothing. He ate his soup silently.
Monokuma: ("Damn, is nobody gonna talk?")
And just like that, everyone finished. He heard a couple of sighs and watched people leave. Eventually, it was just the septet. Monokuma looked around at them.
Otto: "Has anyone seen any suspicious activity?"
Rodrick: "Nope, well, there is some. Monika."
Natsuki: "Hey!"
Rodrick: "I mean, she's been in her room for how long?"
Natsuki: "She's sick!"
Rodrick: "Nobody's told you yet? Hell, guess I have to-"
Otto coughed and glared at Rodrick, who huffed. Natsuki crossed her arms.
Natsuki: "What are you hiding from me?"
Colin: "Yeah, I'm confused!"
Fred: "It's nothing to worry about."
Colin: "But-"
Fred shook his head.
Fred: "Nothing to worry about."
Natsuki and Colin looked at each other, eyebrows furrowed. Felix looked at Monokuma and scratched his head.
Felix: "So...no suspicious activity?"
Monokuma: "None."
Fred: "What about Julian? He's been pretty jumpy lately."
Rodrick: "Who...Oh, Micro Penis! Well, everyone's been pretty jumpy, seeing as our loved ones are in danger and all."
Felix: "I will say, it seems like he's trying to turn us against Monokuma."
Monokuma paused. He crossed his arms and looked away.
Monokuma: "I mean, I'd be against me too."
They turned to him. Felix frowned.
Felix: "Hey, the past is the past. You're obviously trying to help us."
Colin: "Yeah!"
Monokuma brightened a little. They really did trust him, and he couldn't help but admit that it felt nice to be trusted.
The group talked about random things until they heard the dinging.
*Ding dong, bing bong*
Kirameka: "Ahem, this is an announcement. It is officially 10pm, and it is now nighttime. Please, head to your cabin! Sleep tight, campers! And remember, don’t let the bed bugs bite~"
Monokuma: "Welp, I'm beat! Nighty night, y'all!"
And with that, he stood.
Felix: "Yeah, me too. Feel like an old man."
Monokuma looked him up and down before snorting. Otto looked at the others.
Otto: "You guys go get some rest, I'm gonna stay back and clean the kitchen up a bit."
Colin: "Are you sure you don't need some help?"
Otto nodded and shooed all of them out of the dining hall. Monokuma watched him close the doors and couldn't help but feel a sinking in his chest. He shook it off, though, and left for his cabin. He lay in bed, staring at the ceiling.
Monokuma: ("Everything will be fine. It will be alright.")
Kirameka: "Rise and shine, campers! It is officially 7am! That means that nighttime is officially over! Get ready to greet another beautiful day!”
Monokuma opened his eyes and looked around. He hopped up and hurried outside.
Felix: "Hey, Monokuma, what's got you in such a rush?"
Monokuma: "Nothing, just, I have a bad feeling."
Felix looked at him and nodded.
Felix: "Yeah, same, kinda."
Monokuma and Felix headed for the mess hall. Once they got in, they saw that the kitchen door was open.
Julian: "Hey? What's going on?"
They looked back to see Julian standing there with crossed arms. He furrowed his brows once he saw the door to the kitchen. Monokuma waked towards it and peered inside.
And that's when he realized the feeling he had been feeling.
The one he had not liked.
Was in fact despair.
Despair from the lifeless body of Otto Octavius.
