Goblet of fire
A Harry Potter AU where Harry has intrusive thoughts and follows them before he realizes what he’s done.
Example—
During the goblet of fire, Moody-Crouch jr. is teaching the defense class about the unforgivables. During his lecture, he says that it takes intent to cast the AK, and that even if they all started saying the words and swishing their wands, that none of them would be able to hurt him. I want Harry to take that as a personal challenge and quietly try it in the middle of class right after Moody makes that statement.
When he casts it, his mind is calm and detached with a curiosity to see if he can actually do it, but he realizes that his intrusive thought won when the green curse shoots out from his wand and subsequently has an internal flip-out because he just killed his teacher.
The other students saw that it came from him and start screaming, his friends are looking at him bewildered but only a little bit nervous. Everyone tries to get out of the classroom except for Harry and his friends because in this universe they all have a strong loyalty bond of friendship to each other. (Not a magical bond, they’re just really platonically close and would die for each other even at their young age)
-(also, in this one, Ron believes him when Harry says he didn’t enter his name)-
Hermione and Ron see that Harry’s panicking and so try to calm him down, and then they realize that if caught, Harry will no doubt be sentenced to Azkaban for the use of an unforgivable. Or at the very least, he’ll be expelled. They both look at each other in that moment, and their minds are in perfect sync.
They need to get Harry out of there.
With the other students running out in hysterics, they might only have moments before a teacher arrives and then they’ll have no more chances. Harry’s panic is not a blind one, and so he’s still able to think; and with his friends there beside him, he won’t do anything rash in the heat of the moment.
Hermione, wonderful book worm that she is, has studied how to cast the disillusionment charm and manages to cloak all three of them in it after a couple failed attempts. Now concealed for the most part, they rush Harry out of the classroom and into the hall, bypassing students that had been hanging back and just narrowly dodging an incoming professor who was thundering towards the defense room.
Racing down halls and staircases, darting around students and the like, the three teenagers desperately try to think of somewhere they can take Harry to get out of the school or hide. Feeling hopeless and seeing his life crashing/burning before his eyes, Harry notices that they’re on the second floor—and an idea strikes.
He tells them “This way! Follow me” They look at him with uncertainty, but don’t ask questions, and Harry takes the lead in their little dash to sanctuary. Praying that the spell holds, Hermione figures it out before Ron, and feels a burst of pride towards her friend for his quick thinking as she realizes where they’re going.
Lastly, it clicks into place for Ron what the plan is when they reach the abandoned girls lavatory. The chamber, of course they’re going to the chamber. Ron is hopeful that it will be enough to protect his friend since only a parsal mouth should be able to open it.
As they rush to the sinks, for once, Myrtle is quiet. She watches from a distance as the panicked children enter her dreary final resting place.
Harry frantically hisses at the sinks and they rumble apart, revealing the dark chasm that all of a sudden seems a lot more inviting than it did years before. But he realizes something.
Turning to his friends he says
”Guys, you can’t come with me”
The other two looked at him with outrage. Hermione spoke first
“What?! Of course we’re going with you! Why in the world would we not?“
Ron nodded sharply ”Yeah mate, you really think we’ll just leave you down there alone? Nah, that’s barmey”
Harry looked at them, urging them to understand. ”Guys, really. We don’t even know for certain if there is a way out through here. For all we know it could end up being a dead end”
”No! We can’t just let you go down by yourself. And—and there are tunnels! Pipes! All through Hogwarts that we know connect to the chamber. One of them has to lead to a way out right?”
Harrys voice turns more pleading
” ’Mione, please, I’ll be fine on my own. Don’t throw away your lives because of me, there’s still time. If you go back up you can say you don’t know where I am. It was me that cast the curse, not either of you, there are dozens of witnesses that will say the same.”
Hermione seemed torn ”But Harry, we can’t leave you, you’re our friend”
Ron adds ”Mate, we can do this together, just let us help you”
Harry smiles at them ”You’ve already helped me so much, and besides” His smile falls a little ”I really did kill our teacher, there’s no two ways about it—I really don’t deserve friends as good as you.”
He steps closer to the opening,
”Think of it this way, if I can’t get out through any passages, then at least you guys‘ll be able to bring me food and stuff while I’m trapped down there. If we all disappear today, then there’s the chance we could starve”
Long story short they end up agreeing with his plan, and after he enters and re-closes the chambers entrance again, they rush back up to the third floor and remove the disillusionment.
Trying to seemed confused and severely distressed, they do their best to act like they’re just as horrified as the rest of the students. Their story is that while everyone has been clearing out, they had seen Harry making a run for it and tried to follow him.
They chased after, but he shook them off his tail at one point and now they have no idea where he is.
Some are skeptical of their story mainly due to it being no secret how close the three were, but unable to refute it with evidence, no official inquiry is held against them.
