Chapter 12
“Did I fucking break it?!” Regulus stared in bafflement at the necklace he had been trying to destroy for nearly a year. He knew it wouldn’t be easy, but he could not believe it.
“I just bought that damn thing!” He continued to stare at the brand new blender he purchased just that morning; its blades now no longer spinning with the locket tangled inside completely intact. The glare he gave the blender could have destroyed the locket itself if possible. Wacking the side of the blender seemed to do nothing till suddenly he hit it much harder than intended causing the blender to fall to the floor, turn back on, and send the blades shooting out. Regulus scrambled up onto the counter to avoid getting his feet cut up and stared down at the mess that cost him £15.00.
Kreacher ran in at the sound of a crash and rather girlish shriek he’d later swear wasn’t him, but stopped in his tracks at the sight of his Master up on the counter.
“Master Regulus?” Kreacher hesitantly approached, unsure if his Master was in the right state of mind. He had been under a lot of stress lately.
“Kreacher, I was just um… oh nevermind.” Regulus climbed down from the counter and unplugged the blender.
“Nothing to worry about here Kreacher, just some technical difficulties. You can mark Muggle devices off on the list of things to destroy horcruxes. Also don’t tell Pandora about this.”
Pandora nearly died laughing after Kreacher told her anyway.
Regulus was back where he started. How was he going to break them beyond magical repair.
“Maybe we can melt it?” Pandora suggested.
“But with what?” Regulus asked, his nose scrunched up again.
“We could look into different poisons and venoms to see if those break it down.” Regulus grinned and kissed Pandora’s forehead.
“You’re a genius! What would I do without you?” Regulus said excitedly.
“Never get anything done.” Pandora said before laughing.
They poured over books for what felt like hours and came across a few options.
“How are we meant to know if one is strong enough?” Pandora asked, feeling discouraged.
‘We’ll just have to test them all,” Regulus said, putting his book down.
He grabbed a piece of parchment saying, “Okay let's make a list of which ones to try and we’ll testing them out, it can’t hurt,”
Pandora grabbed a book and flipped it open saying, “Okay there's Venomous Tentacula which sounds too dangerous to test without proper precautions which we don’t have access to.”
“We’ll just have to be careful.” Regulus said, writing it down. Pandora grabbed another book and said, “Doxy venom could work,”
“We have doxies at 12 Grimmauld Place. They’re in the attic so they should be easy to test.” Regulus said, adding it to the list.
“Streeler venom, it's corrosive which sounds promising,” Pandora said. Regulus nodded in agreement and jotted it down.
“There's Basilisk venom but I doubt we’d ever be able to get that,” Pandora dropped the book and grabbed another.
“Pukwudgies make venom too although I’m not sure how,” Pandora scanned the page she was looking at and perked up, “Oh Regulus!” Pandora said looking excited.
“What? Did you find something?” He leaned forward eager to hear what she found.
“Pukwudiges dip arrow heads into their venom! You could do the same! It’d make your arrows more effective if you can’t aim well.” She said grinning.
“What type of poison would I use? I don’t know how to get Pukwudgie venom,” Regulus said.
“You said it yourself. You have access to Doxies, which are extremely poisonous and need an antidote that's difficult to get.” She said, practically vibrating with excitement.
“Pandora this is why you were in Ravenclaw,” He said before kissing her forehead.
They tried all the ones on their list yet none of them worked. The horcrux was just too powerful. They were at a loss. How were they meant to destroy them now?
“Are we meant to hatch a Basilisk just to destroy them? Do you think the Ministry would let it slide all things considered?” Regulus asked, grasping at straws.
Pandora sighed, “We’ll just have to keep looking,”
“Maybe Knockturn Alley has something. You keep researching here and I’ll go look there,” Regulus said before grabbing the invisibility cloak and apparating away from Knockturn Alley. Even if he knew the alley like the back of his hand now from how he looked there. He was hoping some shops put out new merchandise.
After looking through multiple shops he had a small collection of books on dark magic and hexes hoping something will be of use. He was leaving a shop feeling frustrated at their lack of progress. How were they meant to destroy these? The only thing he can think of is to hatch a basilisk but that was extremely illegal and he has already broken enough laws. He didn’t need another added to the list. He almost missed it when walking with his head hung low.
There it was sitting in the window. The answer to their problem.
A basilisk fang. Being sold at an extremely high price even for a pureblood family from the Sacred 28. Prephas it wasn’t meant to be sold and only met to be decoration. It might not even be the real deal but Regulus knew he had to take it.
He didn’t even bother to hide him opening the door and walking inside. He was a man on a mission. He reached a hand from under the cloak and grabbed the fang only for a loud shriek to sound out and the table to rattle. He quickly covered his hand back up with the cloak and rushed to the door hearing the shopkeeper yelling at the sight of his basilisk fang missing. He quickly rushed out of the store and down the street to get as far from the shop as possible.
He let out a sigh of relief when he was in the clear. Only for him to hear a conversation that made his blood run cold. There was going to be an important Death Eater meeting with all members of Voldemort’s side present, not just his hand picked few purebloods. All creatures and lower rank wizards alike were to attend. Something big was going to happen and Regulus had to be there to find out. But how? Using the cloak would be too risky. With so many people it’d be easy for someone to step on it and it would slide off or bump into someone and be found out. He’d have to find something else. But what?
He walked past a potions shop before reversing to stand in front of the door.
Bingo.
