Bro is he ok?
Rei couldn’t do it, she couldn’t just walk away like that. She needed to know that her friend was safe
Getting in was going to be the hard part. She couldn’t just waltz in, if everything Dazai said was true there was probably some kind of magical defense system.
Her best bet would be to teleport in and hope no one would see her. And that is just what she did.
She opened a small portal in the infirmary, to try and hear if there were people in the room with Dazai, and when she heard no voices she expanded the portal and stepped through. The first thing she saw was Dazai. He had so many more bandages then normal and even his regular bandages were much thicker than usual
He looked peaceful almost, at least much more peaceful than Rei has ever seen him.
He had so many IVs and blood bags, Dazai surely wouldn’t be very happy whenever he woke up. He’s always been iffy about medical stuff, it's probably at fault of that excuse of a human, and even worse doctor, Mori. Rei never knew why but that man always gave her the ick, and she never even had the displeasure of having a full conversation with him.
Her train of thought was cut short by the opening of a door, murmured conversation, and footsteps coming her way. She, in an attempt to hide threw herself under the nearest bed and closed the curtains around it
She stayed completely quiet and only peeked out when the sound of voices was quieted down, despite this she wasn’t alone
There was a kid in green, representing… Slipersin? Rei wasn’t really listening when Dazai explained the house system. But from what she remembered from Dazai’s many rants about Hogwarts the people there, this must be Blaise. Dazai always seemed to really trust Blaise, and if Dazai trusted him, so did Rei.
Blaise was sitting next to Dazai’s bed, resting his hand on Dazai’s. He had an entirely emotionless expression on his face but it was obvious he’d been crying
She heard a door open and looked over to see a woman who must be the school nurse walk up to Blaise, put a hand on his shoulder, and try to comfort him
“Mr. Zambini, it really is getting late, I suggest you go back to your dorm room. I understand you and Mr. Dazai are close, and if you would like I will have all of your teachers excuse you from your classes tomorrow, but I must close down the infirmary now, and you must leave.” she said sympathetically
“Yes, I would like that.” Blaise responded bluntly, never taking his eyes off Dazai while standing up then turning around sharply and walking out.
The nurse lets out a sigh, packs up her stuff, turns on the lamp next to Dazai’s bed and turns off the main light, sends one last weary glance at Dazai, then leaves.
Rei took this opportunity to climb out from under the bed, walk over to Dazai, and place a hand on Dazai’s head.
“Dazai, I know you’re awake.” No answer “I can tell you’re faking sleep. Whenever you’re asleep and someone touches you nothing happens, but when you’re awake and just faking sleep you subconsciously flinch away from the touch, you can't fool me.” Dazai, knowing his cover had been blown opened his eyes then sent a glare at Rei
Dazai opens his mouth to speak then closes it, looks at Rei and makes a motion, presumably asking for a pencil and paper. When Dazai got the paper he took a deep breath then started writing. It only took a couple seconds before he was done writing and showed it to Rei
‘I need to go back to Yokohama, can you bring me there? Please?’
Rei was too shocked to speak and the two of them sat in silence for a few minutes
“WHAT?! NO… Shuji you can't go back there, I'm not taking you there. That's final.”
Dazai made a noncommittal gesture as if asking ‘Why not’
“Because, that place sucks. Everyone in Yokohama, in the mafia, they all think you're dead. Why would you want to go back there?”
‘Because if they see that i survived this then i won't be useless and i can prove to father that i'm strong.”
“Shuji-kun, you don't need to prove anything to that piece of shit… Listen, I can't stop you if you decide to go back there, but I'm not going to help you, and I can't promise that I'll stay… I don't want to just abandon you but if you go back there I can't promise i’ll stick around. I'm not mad at you, but this,” Rei gestured towards Dazai, the hospital bed, his bandages, all of it. “I don't know if I can do this anymore.”
Dazai sat, staring at his hands before picking up the pencil and continued writing
‘The only place I'm wanted is in the mafia. I don't belong here, no one even wants me here’
“I strongly disagree. You must have actually been asleep then because I saw at least three students and one professor waiting for you to wake up. One kid even stayed till the nurse forced him out. If you don't think people here care about you, you are simply wrong.”
‘Fine… I'll stay here, but what about you? I don't want to just leave you there, I know you hate it as much as I do.”
“If it means you are safe, I will gladly move to London.”
‘Ok that's enough emotions for one day i'm tired and everything hurts. Goodnight, see you when I see you. Oh, please, from here on out, call me Dazai.”
“Mm. Goodnight, Dazai”
And with that Rei left.
Dazai still wasn’t sure why he had agreed to stay at Hogwarts, but he knew that if he took his word back now, Rei would never forgive him.
How would he even tell his professors that he was no longer going to go back to Yokohama. The easiest way would be to explain everything, including his time in the mafia and what he’s done. He wouldn’t be surprised if they all hated him after this. He’s done unforgivable things. He’s killed people for fun. He should’ve died in that alley way instead of burdening others with his problems. If they dont hate him, they're insane, it's as simple as that. It would be best for everyone if he had never existed. Snape probably would’ve preferred that, Dazai was an inconvenience at best and a monster at worst. He was the worst of the worst, the scum on the bottom of Mori’s shoe, the parasite eating away at the life source of all those around him, a sledgehammer in a glass house, an open flame surrounded by kindling, a-
Dazai’s spiraling thoughts were interrupted by the opening of a door and Madam Pomfrey walking in.
“Oh! You’re awake! Are you ok, your heart rate spiked randomly. I have a monitor that sends me alerts when a patient's vitals are abnormal. Oh dear, why are you crying?”
Crying? He wasn’t crying, the demon prodigy didn’t cry. Crying, sadness, that was all human stuff. Dazai wasn’t human, he never had been, he-
“Calm down dear, it's ok. Stay with me now, breathe in, and out, good. Is it ok if I touch you?” when Dazai nodded she placed a hand on his shoulder. “Are you with me now? Alright, I don't know what you’re thinking right now but it’s not true, those thoughts aren’t worth listening to. Go to sleep dear, it’ll all be ok.”
She kept talking after that but Dazai didn’t hear it. He had fallen asleep.
Mori was right, Hogwarts really was making him soft.
If this was what being soft was like,
Dazai liked being soft.
