“What do you think you’re doing!?” Trevor the Toad exclaimed in a shocked voice.
“Nothing!” Marina blurted out, descending from the surface of the Great Lake suddenly and looking at her boyfriend full of guilt.
“I saw you.” Said Trevor in a tone of disbelief. “You were allowing those boys to tickle your tentacles. I know those boys Marina. Sure they seem nice enough, but they’re pranksters, you know- class clowns. They’re just using you for a few laughs and a good story.”
“You’re making that up. You’re just jealous.”
“Don’t flatter yourself,” Trevor retorted. “I’m from that world, remember? Neville was great and all, but he wasn’t equipped to own a pet. So we went our separate ways and I made the best decision of my life by leaving the dry land behind and moving out here to the lake. You really need to sort out your priorities and leave this fantasy of yours behind. The world up there is messy. Trust me, it’s not worth it.”
Trevor gave Marina one final meaningful glance, before swimming away saying, “Please be careful Marina.”
Marina looked up longingly towards the surface of the lake where the 3 boys had been before descending to her den. As she approached home, she thought about what Trevor had said.
Maybe he's right
Maybe there is something the matter with me
I just don't see how a world that makes such wonderful things could be bad.
She crawled through the cave opening and entered her spacious home that comfortably fits a 70ft giant squid, and many, many belongings. Marina floated in the center of her home, admiring her expansive collection of treasures she’s gathered over the years.
Look at this stuff Isn't it neat?
Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?
Wouldn't you think I'm the girl
The girl who has everything?
She moseyed over to the bottle section of her collection and began to straighten up. She was in the middle of the very daunting project of organizing all her bottles alphabetically and filling them with sand to keep them grounded to the spot. In case no one was aware, the fine motor skills required to fill and recap 100s of butterbeer bottles, do not come so easily to giant squids. This impressive collection of hers certainly kept her busy. You’d think it’d keep her satisfied. Right?
Look at this trove
Treasures untold
How many wonders can one cavern hold?
Looking around here you'd think
Sure, she's got everything
Marina wanted to be angry at Trevor, but she couldn’t. Despite his dislike of the dry land world up above, he was always incredibly supportive and helpful with her treasure collection. She’ll always appreciate him identifying the name and purpose of each item for her, sometimes accompanied with fascinating stories. But, there were still some items Trevor was unsure about or in the case of a few objects, completely perplexed with. Most of these items, he reckons are muggle things brought to Hogwarts by muggle-borns.
For about the hundredth time that week, Marina floated towards the corner labeled, ‘Muggle Mystery Multitude’ to study and admire these curious artifacts. With her suckers, she picked up the metal object she had nicked from a mousy haired boy a few years back. Trevor said it looks like a device they call a ‘camera,’ but different because this particular item wasn’t able to take pictures. She placed down the camera-like object and looked at the other items she longed to know the purpose of. These included an oddly shaped device that said ‘Bop It’ in the center, a cute little fake animal filled with beads of some sort, and a flat blue square pictured 4 men labeled ‘Weezer.'
I've got gadgets and gizmos a-plenty
I've got whozits and whatzits galore
You want thingamabobs?
I've got twenty!
But who cares?
No big deal
I want more
She smiled as she admired all the clothing items that the tiny humans wore. There were several pointy hats, some scarfs, multiple pairs of glasses, & even a few cloaks. She opened the trunk that a poor first year dropped while crossing the lake. A portable container full of all their belongings? Genius! Well. . . if you don’t drop it into a lake that is. Marina thought about returning the trunk to the boat it fell from. . . but it was just too incredible to give up. She at least helped the first-year get back on to the boat. What she would to be that tiny human on a boat heading off to school. What she would do to be able to wear these clothes.
I wanna be where the people are
I wanna see, wanna see 'em dancin'
Walking around on those, what do you call 'em?
Oh, feet
Marina picked up a black clothing item she’s observed people wearing on their feet. She didn’t know why humans would cover up such a beautiful creation with some clunky junk with dirty white string on the top, but she wished she could be apart of it.
Flippin' your fins, you don't get too far
Legs are required for jumping, dancing
Strolling along down a, what's that word again?
Street!
Sure, at least she had appendages, unlike many other creatures in this blasted lake. But. . . 8 arms and 2 tentacles is just too much. Definitely too much to dance with grace and dignity. Seriously, how is she supposed to dance with her boyfriend with their different number of appendages and size difference. She’d be able to dance with Trevor with ease if she was human. . . right? And with that thought, she turned to her most desired possessions; a stunningly beautiful ballgown and odd yet mesmerizing slim shoes with very high heels. She had come into possession of this breathtaking outfit the night of the Yule Ball, when some teenagers stripped off their clothing to. . . well you know. . . by the lake shore. If only she could dress up in a beautiful dress, dance all night, and make passionate love to her boyfriend. That was truly the dream. Oh to be a part of that world.
Up where they walk, up where they run
Up where they stay all day in the sun
Wanderin' free, wish I could be
Part of that world
