The Spider Infested Cruise; Part 3
***Cruise Day 5***
Yelena and Kate once again woke up a) way too late and b) on the wrong day. Kate furrowed her brows as she glanced at the clock (it was one of those handy things that told you what date it was as well). It read the 6th of April. Kate could've sworn it was the 5th. She became slightly alarmed when she realised that she didn't feel that suspicious about her being a day of in her guess work. She tried to linger on it for longer, but soon her mind told her to drop it: it was fine, nothing was going on.
She and Yelena ate a quick breakfast, called SHIELD, were weirded out at the silence on the other end, and then went on a walk through the cruise ship. Agent Hill and Director Fury had been acting funny, asking if they were okay or needed backup. Which they naturally denied: they were fine on their own!
***Back on the raft***
Agent Hill sighed as she leant back in her chair: 'They didn't remember anything that happened. We need to pull the plug on this mission.'
Fury nodded: 'We'll get them out of there as soon as they hit land the next time, if we go in there now, guns blazing, it won't do much good.'
'You think they'll be fine for that time?'
'Barton trained one of them, Natasha Romanoff is the other's sister, I think they'll be fine.' Agent Hill did not look convinced, 'Hill, I can't send in a helicopter. It'll come on the news. The Spider will put two and two together: he's a smart guy. We just need to have a little faith in our agents: they are going to be fine.'
'I guess.'
'Besides, they don't hit port for 5 more days, nothing will be achieved by us worrying.'
'I guess.'
'Are you going to keep saying that this whole day?'
'I guess.'
'Just why?!' Fury grumbled, 'Is there something wrong with you?'
'I guess.'
'...' Fury scowled, then stalked out of the room. A nearby agent laughed:
'You really know how to screw with his head, don't ya.'
Hill smiled and shrugged, then sipped her coffee, looking at the agent over the rim: 'I guess.'
***Back on the cruise ship***
'Hey you! Stop, you!' a female voice shouted from behind Kate and Yelena. They stopped in their track and turned around to find a black girl* with a curly hair combed back into a ponytail standing there, her arms crossed.
* uhh... so in the world, different terms are used: coloured, brown, black African American, so I'm just using the one I'm most familiar with. I am not trying to insult anyone so yeah, if you think the term I am using its rude: in other countries its actually polite :) ANd like how am I supposed to describe her?!
'Sup.' Kate greeted awkwardly, not sure why the girl had been shouting, 'Do we know you?'
'Do you... do you know me?!' the girl spluttered, 'You tried to rob my friend yesterday and then just ran!'
'What, no we didn't леденец!' Yelena shouted, making the girl in front of them raise her eyebrows:
'Did you just call me a lollipop?' she asked with a scoff.
'Wait, that's what that word means?!' Kate demanded, turning to Yelena, 'You have been calling me lollipop every time you get mad?'
Yelena shrugged: 'It doesn't really matter which word I use, now does it: you don't understand Russian.' she excused herself.
'Hey, aren't you guys going to give a reason for trying to rob my friend?!' the girl demanded.
'We never robbed your friend. We went to the lounge chairs first thing in the morning by the pool and then we...' Kate stumbled, her brows furrowed, 'Then we... Yelena, what did we do then?'
'Beats me: there was that guy Peter who came and greeted us and then... I don't know what happened.'
The girl raised her eyebrows, looking intently at the two girls: 'You two really don't know.' she said softly, confusing etched into her face.
'Well... a lot of weird stuff has been happening over the trip where we forget what happens and stuff.' Kate said, scratching her head.
'Oh.' the girl answered, 'Name's Julie by the way.' she told them, extending her hand, which both Yelena and Kate shook respectively. 'Also: I can tell you two what you did: you broke into Rebecca's suite, rifled around in her stuff looking for something, then we returned and you two ran out.'
'I don't remember that.' Yelena said, her brain working overtime. 'Wait, does this cruise ship have security cameras?' she asked no one in particular.
'It does.' Kate answered, 'You're going to hack them aren't you?'
Yelena nodded as she fished her phone from her pocket, making Julie snort: 'You're going to hack using your phone?!'
'It works!'
'I guess.'
The girls stood around for a few minutes, until Yelena smiled: 'I'm in!' she declared, turning the phone so that the other two could see it. Yelena scrolled through the footage.
'Go to the 4th.' Julie instructed her, which Yelena did. Checking the security cameras for the pools, finding them sitting on the lounge chairs. Peter came walking up to them, and then suddenly, his eyes started twirling around. Yelena zoomed in on Kate's face:
'Your pupils aren't usually that small.' she commented, glancing at Kate's eyes.
'Wait, did you two get hypnotised?!' Julie exclaimed excitedly: 'That's so cool.'
'Not cool! We don't know what we did during that time!' Kate exclaimed.
Julie gave her a quizzical look: 'I just told you guys what you did: you became super-robbers.' she told them with a laugh. Yelena scrolled to the footage of the hallway outside of Rebecca's room, and sure enough they broke into it, only to run out followed by Julie 12 minutes later. Kate raised her eyebrows:
'You're a fast runner.' she complemented Julie, who smiled back:
'So what do we do? Who is that guy?'
'My guess,' Yelena stated, her mouth forming a thin line: 'He's The Spider.'
'You mean the mean version of Robin Hood?' Jullie asked, then blushed: 'That's what Rebecca calls him: he's steals from the rich so like, Robin Hood.'
Yelena gasped: 'We need to inform SHIELD that we found out who The Spider is!' she said, turning to Kate, who nodded, fishing her phone out of her pocket at the same time that Yelena did. Julie just gawked: she was talking to actual SHIELD agents!
Julie looked at the two agents, then suddenly saw their pupils grow smaller: 'Well, that can't be good.' she told herself, as Kate and Yelena droned as one:
'We obey our master, The Spider.' in one smooth motion, they both threw their phones over the banister and into the churning sea below.
Immediately after doing this, their pupils grew to their normal size again and they turned to each other: 'We should contact SHIELD and tell them we know the Spider's identity.' Both reached into their pockets, but didn't find their phones.
'Where's my phone?' Kate questioned.
Jullie shook her head: 'You both just threw your phones into the sea, saying something about obeying your master the spider.'
Kate groaned: 'So he can now also control us from a distance: how will we warn SHIELD now?'
'Slight tangent here: but you two are SHIELD agents?'
Kate shrugged: 'Yeah, she's Black Widow's sister and I'm Hawkeye's understudy.' she stated, as Yelena cuffed her over the head, earning a glare from Kate: 'What?'
'Rule number 304: no telling people who your mentor was or whom you are related to!' Yelena spat, making Julie laugh:
'That's so cool though! Is he really death?'
'Don't answer that.' Yelena bit at Kate who rolled her eyes:
'I feel like you made up the rule number.' she deflected, making Yelena colour slightly:
'Doesn't retract any of its truthfullness. Now: what do we do?'
'No chance you memorised your boss's number, did you?' Julie asked hopfully, but both agents shook their heads. Julie thoughts for a second, blowing away the loose strand of hair hanging in her face, then she smiled: 'I know: you were looking for something in Rebecca's room, we should look through it, maybe it'll trigger your memories of what you were doing!'
Yelena smiled: 'Not bad, Julie Hoffman.'
Kate rolled her eyes at Julie: 'She likes using people's full names, just to emphasise that she knows it. It took her 3 months to stop doing that to me.'
Julie smirked: 'Russians amiright?' Kate nodded agreement.
'That's racism.' Yelena noted stingely.
'Actually, that's ethnocentrism.' a familiar voice corrects Yelena from behind them. Yelena swiveled around, her arms immediately dropping to her sides as she looked into the Spider's swirling eyes. Kate shared the same fate as Julie backed away nervously:
'Guys?' she squeeked uncomfortably, 'Snap out of it please?' she almost begged them, her back pressing against the wall.
'Restrain her.' Peter ordered. But Julie stopped him:
'If you do, I'll scream. I'll scream so loud, everyone will come running!'
Peter smiled, gesturing for Kate and Yelena to advance: 'That's the thing, I can manipulate their minds to forget they ever heard you scream. How do you think I always get away with what I do?'
Kate and Yelena now were holding Julie by the shoulders, not really keeping her in place, but their body language was obvious: try anything and she would be floored.
'Why?' Julie exclaimed, 'What's it with you and stealing.'
'It's fun.' Peter answered with a shrug, 'Besides, it's about time the rich got their due karma. They always get away with everything. A rich bloke once murdered my uncle, he got off with 3 years in prison: just because he was rich. My uncle died, and that guy only got 3 years in the slammer! 3 years!' Peter exclaimed angrily.
'Right, and because one rich person took advantage of someone who was poor, all the rich have to suffer?' Julie bit back.
Peter inclined his head: 'I guess not, but wasn't it time the poor had some good things happen to them as well. You think I keep all the money I steal to myself? No.' he chuckled, 'Almost all of it goes to those who need: homeless people got homes, shelters got more food and orphanigs got better accomodation because of the money I gave them. Tell me, is that really that bad?'
Julie rolled her eyes: 'As a guy in a show once said: "Good motive, still murder". Just because your motive is noble, doesn't mean it justifies what you do to achieve it.'
Peter chuckled: 'Of course a rich person would say that, Yelena, care to get me a glass of lemonade.' Yelena inclined her head emotionlessly, running off to get what her master had ordered her to collect, returning after only a few seconds with a glass of lemonade. 'Thank you deary.' Peter told her with a smile, sipping at the lemonade and glancing down at Julie:
'See that? See how willing she is to help. In the end that's all people want: to be controlled. To not think, just to obey.'
Jullie rolled her eyes: 'Exactly how psycho are you?'
Peter chuckled darkly: 'Psycho, no: I'm enlightened. I learned that, when I got bit by that radioactive spider. Things happen for a reason. I was chosen. I was chosen to help those less fortunate, who care about how I go about it?'
Julie shook her head as Kate's grip strengthened on her shoulders: 'You know you sound really narcissistic right?'
'I guess to the unenlightened I do, let me enlighten you.' he answered darkly, levelling his gaze with hers. Julie tried to shut her eyes: knowing what was coming, but she found she couldn't. Mud-brown swirled together with regular brown, hazel flitted around and there was a dash of green. 'Now look at this pendant, isn't it beautiful?' Peter asked, putting a pendant in her hand. Julie looked down: the belly and head were made out of some kind of ruby, it was beautiful. It pulsed with a soft glow: it was the most gorgeous thing she had ever seen.
'Now Julie,' Peter said, making Kate release her grip on Julie's shoulder with the wave of his hand, 'Can you do something for me.'
'Anything.' Julie breathed softly, staring into those hypnotic eyes.
'Your friend Rebecca, where does she keep her ticket for the diamond exhibit?'
'Under the sink in the bathroom.'
Peter turned to Kate and Yelena: 'You guys get that? Get it for me.' Kate and Yelena started to leave, 'Wait.' Peter commanded them, then turning to Julie: 'Is your friend in the room?' Julie shook her head. 'Will she return soon?' Julie shook her head again. Peter smiled happily: 'Go with them, let them in, if Rebecca returns, tell her that they are some new friends you made.'
Julie nodded and walked over to Kate and Yelena, then the trio set off for Rebecca's suite. Within a few minutes they were outside the dor. Julie fished the key out of her pocket, unlocking the door and letting Kate, Yelena and herself in.
Within the half hour they were back to Peter, who smiled as he received the ticket, praising them on a job well done. 'You can return to your room and go to sleep. If Rebecca does anything out of the ordinary: tell me. ' he commanded Julie, who nodded once, the listlessly walked down the path, dissappearing behind a corner.
Peter smiled, returning his attention back to Kate and Yelena: 'You two can return to your rooms as well and go to sleep. Be ready to serve me again soon.'
'Yes master.' Kate and Yelena monotoned, then turned around, also dissappearing behind the bend in the path.
Peter smiled: his plan was going wonderfully, now to just quickly alter Rebecca's memory, so that she would not be weirded out by Julie sleeping the whole day tomorrow. The day of the heist was drawing closer. The day the rich would pay up was nearing.
