is it any wonder?
Peter's whole world came crashing down around him in a matter of seconds. This could not be happening. Was it some kind of joke? He must have fallen asleep, and this was some dream world out to get him. He lifted his head and looked over at Ned who was already talking excitedly “do you think I'll get to meet-” nope this was definitely real. He groaned and let his head hit the desk again, of course they would go on a field trip to fucking stark industries.
“Ned, you've already met them, you are literally an intern. How are you so excited?” Peter mumbled; his voice muffled against the desk. Sure, Ned only got to work on weekends and when they had time off school and the occasional 'my mom said I could be here!' but still; Before Ned got the chance to respond Mr. Harrington spoke up, drawing the class's attention back to him. He quickly briefed everyone on the paperwork they would need to have signed and returned the following day.
“Now I know this is very short notice, but we wanted to have the trip on Friday so it could be a weekend long trip! We just got wind that the trip had been approved yesterday so this has all been very fast and came as a shock to me too. I know y'all are excited so I'll just go over some basic rules and pass out papers, then class will be dismissed." Peter had tuned him out at this point, he already knew the tower's rules. He lived there for god's sake. He was never, ever, ever going to forgive his dad for this. Ned had started talking again, anxiously rambling about the avengers as if he wouldn't be allowed to talk again if he didn't get everything he needed to say out immediately.
Pete felt a little bad about that thought because right as he turned his head in his arms to tell Ned to calm down and breathe, Mr. Harrington interrupted them with a sigh. Peter looked up at him as he tapped the boy’s desk, and it seemed as if the class had collectively stopped breathing. Harrington set their papers on the desk and wiped his hand across his face, his eye bags ever prominent. He took a deep breath.
“Peter we need to talk after class, I'm not sure if you will be able to attend this field trip.” Peter sighed and nodded before letting his head fall back onto his arms.
The class went back to what they were previously doing as the teacher continued passing papers around, pointedly ignoring flash as he yelled across the room “Guess everyone is going to find out you lied about the internship now, huh, penis parker!"
Before he even got the chance to register flash’s words mj was on it “you know for someone so straight, you seem to be awfully obsessed with what peter does and doesn't do in his free time. Got a little crush, do we?” Flash just glared and fell silent; Mj usually had that effect on people.
Mr. Harrington announced the class was dismissed and everyone began gathering their things. Peter was really sulking now, not only was he going to have to spend 3 days with his class at his home, but he was also going to have to spend it with flash. “Are you going to be okay? We can try and stay in the class while you talk to Harrington, if you want" Ned said as he patted his shoulder.
Mj turned around, having finished gathering her stuff, “I don't think Harrington would try to kick us out if I stayed too.''
Peter sighed and swung his backpack over his shoulder “no, no it's okay, I'm not too worried. I'll meet you guys out at the lockers after.” They nodded and filed out with the rest of the class.
Okay so maybe he lied, he was a little worried. Mr. Harrington wasn't the best teacher in the world, and he didn't do anything when it came to flash but surely, he didn't believe flash?? Peter had filled out so many documents to prove the internship was real. It was insane, even Tony was shocked it needed as much paperwork as it did. He slowly made his way to Mr. Harrington's desk while anxiously fidgeting with his backpack strap.
The teacher looked up at him with a weary expression on his face and cleared his throat. “Peter... I know things have been rough for you lately and I really shouldn't have let this go on for as long as I did, but I need you to come clean about the internship. Now that we have this opportunity, we really can't let you continue to lie about it. If Stark Industries found out about your lie it could be really damaging for our reputation and yours.”
Oh you've got to be kidding me, Peter thought. It for sure could not get any worse than this. Harrington continued on his lecture while Peter wished a giant hole would appear in the ground and eat him.
“I want to let you go on this trip but you need to let go of this lie and promise to not cause any trouble” Peter's shoulders sagged; he wanted nothing more than to fold in on himself. He knew he must have looked hurt because guilt flickered across Harrington's face before it was replaced by his usual tired expression.
“I swear it's not a lie Mr. Harrington! Didn't you see all the paperwork??”
Harrington sighed before he spoke “Come on Peter, that was clearly forged. Please just promise to keep to yourself on this trip.” Peter promised and left the class in search of Ned and Mj.
After he found them, they made their way to the double doors leading out to the parking lot. “Well, what did he say? How'd it go?” Ned pushed. Peter started picking the hangnails on his fingers, a nervous habit he picked up after Ben died.
“Apparently, he agrees that I've been lying about the internship, and I either need to come clean about lying or I need to keep to myself on the trip and not cause any trouble. Knowing my family though I don't know how the ‘no trouble’ part is going to work out. Harley and Tony are going to be so pissed, God and everyone is going to find out about flash. It's going to be a shitshow.”
Mj actually laughed. “It's about time flash gets what's coming to him, I personally, can't wait to see it.” Peter halfheartedly glared at Mj before he noticed Happy waving him down. They continued talking about the soon to be shitshow until they got to the black SUV Happy drove. They all greeted Happy and said their goodbyes.
Peter crawled into the backseat and Happy set off. He handed the kid a Lord of The Rings themed lunch box before asking about his day. Peter grumbled a thank you and started eating the turkey sandwich from the lunchbox, recounting his day in between bites, purposefully leaving out the trip. Despite Happy's not so happy exterior, he did care for the boy. Of course, he immediately noticed that Peter wasn't bouncing off the walls as per usual, so he did what any good person would do. He texted the Family - Peter gc. It was just a simple “Peter seems a bit off today, check up on him.” but that was about as much emotion you were going to get out of the man. They pulled into the tower's garage and Peter climbed out of the car yelling “thank you, happy!” over his shoulder.
Normally Peter would go through the front entrance, but he didn't feel like the interactions would help him too much, he was too overstimulated to begin with. He didn't need to make it worse. He opted for the private elevator, hoping he would be alone. Once he was in the elevator Friday spoke, “Hello Peter, do you want me to tell the boss you are home? Would you like to go to his lab?”'
Peter thought for a minute before responding, “No thank you, I just want to go to my room right now. Could you tell Harley to come to my room though, please?” The elevator started moving to the 91st floor as Friday said of course.
Peter was practically vibrating at this point and not in a good way. his binder was itchy, his shirt was suddenly too tight, he was too aware of how his shoes confined his feet, the lights seemed impossibly bright, not to mention the insane noise coming from a few floors below and he just needed it all to stop. Once he got to his floor he didn't even stop to see if anyone was around, he darted to his room at an insane speed. as he did that, he missed the worried glances from Steve and Bucky.
Finally, he was in his room, he asked Karen to activate ‘overstimulated protocol”, threw his backpack on the bed, kicked off his shoes and began searching for one of Harley's hoodies. The longer it took for him to find a hoodie, the more distressed he became. His thoughts were going a million miles an hour. Why isn't Harley here yet? This is all your fault. If you had just lied about the internship, you wouldn't be in this position. Where are Harley's hoodies? Why can't I find anything? Why can't I do anything right?
Next thing you know Peter was curled in on himself on the floor in front of his bed, his knees brought impossibly close to his chest. Tears stung his eyes, and his heart was beating so fast it was all he could hear.
He must have missed the door opening because there was a hand on his shoulder, and he nearly jumped out of his skin. Harley drew his hand back and sat in front of Peter, he began to speak in a tone low enough to not hurt Peter but loud enough he would still be able to hear him “darlin’?” he paused. “Hey, hey, hey what's going on baby?”
Peter's eyes shot up to scan Harley's face, still slightly scared. Harley's eyebrows furrowed; he'd do anything to be able to read Peter's mind right now. “Can you talk darlin’? or are you nonverbal right now?”
Peter opened his mouth and closed it again, a small pout showing on his face. His heartbeat began to slow as he focused on Harley in front of him. He tried to talk again, stuttering his way through. “I can talk.”
Relief spread through Harley as he sighed. At least it wasn't so bad Peter completely shut down, he thought, before speaking again. “Can I touch you baby?”
Peter nodded and Harley pried his arms away from his legs and began shifting Peter into his lap. Once they had gotten situated, Harley sat with his legs crossed, Peter had one knee on either side of Harley's lap. His head resting on the blond's shoulder. Harley held him so tight it would have been uncomfortable for anyone else, but he knew Peter needed a certain kind of stimulation.
20 minutes had passed, and Peter hadn't said anything. Harley knew he would have to initiate the conversation, but he wanted to give the younger boy time to decompress. After a few more minutes he turned his head slightly and kissed Peter's ear before whispering “talk to me darlin’. What's going on in that pretty head of yours?”
Peter snuggled into the crook of his neck for a few more minutes before sitting back with a sigh. He knew he needed to get it out because he wouldn't feel better and he needed Harley's help finding more comfortable clothes because apparently, he couldn't do that himself.
He looked up at Harley and began to talk, trying not to stutter or at least sound coherent. “Everything was too much. Mr. Harrington announced a three-day field trip to the tower today and that was already terrible on its own. I'm so mad at dad right now. Flash thought that would be the perfect opportunity to yell about the internship being fake and he keeps calling me fuckin penis parker. Harrington also decided to let me know today that he didn't actually believe me about the internship and said that I needed to stop lying or at least promise to not cause trouble. Everything has been building into a giant shit show today. By the time I left school my clothes felt wrong, lights were too bright, everything was so loud. On top of that I came in here to change into your clothes because they always make me feel better, but I couldn't find any of your hoodies and I ended up spiraling.”
he took a deep breath and looked away from Harley, he didn't mean to tell him everything, damn.
Any other day and Harley would have laughed, a field to Stark Industries. That could only happen to peter. But today? He was fuming. Call him a bull in a China shop because he was seeing red. He gently lifted Peter's chin so he would back up at him “oh darlin’...” he whispered, “we can talk about the rest in a minute but first let's get you into some comfy clothes, yeah?”
Peter nodded and buried his head back in Harley's neck. The older boy shifted and stood up with Peter clinging to him like a koala. They made their way to Harley's room and found a hoodie and sweats that wouldn't bother Peter too much. It was a struggle honestly, anyone who witnessed it would have called Harley a god. The whole time he was searching for clothes Peter refused to let go. He couldn't stand the idea of being away from Harley right now, so with the clothes in hand they made their way all the way back to Peter's room because he had to have his own socks of course.
This time Peter let the older boy gently set him on the bed as Harley asked, “how long have you been binding today, sweet boy?”
peter hid his face in his hands and mumbled “not long, really, only a few hours.''
They both knew that was a lie and all Harley had to do was move Peter's hands away from his face for the boy to break. “Okay, so maybe like, a little, or a lot over 8 hours.”
Harley sighed, "I'm going to go get you something to eat and you are going to change. When I come back, we are going to finish our conversation, okay?”
Peter whined and threw himself back on the bed but mumbled okay anyway.
Once Harley was gone Peter quickly changed into the sweats and debated keeping his binder on for a few minutes before giving in and changing out of it, the hoodie his boyfriend picked out was an old MIT hoodie that smelled just like him. After he changed, he went and laid back on his bed. It was so comfy he could have fallen asleep, but a soft knock on the door woke him up again. “Can I come in again?”
Peter recognized that southern drawl anywhere, it had only been a few minutes, but he missed him anyway.
“Come in!!”
Peter smiled as Harley walked in with a bunch of snacks and sat on the bed next to his boy. Peter's head rested on the taller boy's shoulder as they talked about before, “I'm sorry Harrington doesn't believe you baby, but if you look at it this way, then you'll get to show everyone that you do so much more than just work here.”
Peter hummed in agreement before he thought of the worst, “so much could go wrong, everyone could find out about flash, and I don't need something happening to him because it either makes things worse for me, or he'll move on to some other kid and that can't happen."
Harley turned to look Peter in the eyes, a pained expression clear on his face as he spoke. “darlin’ what he is doing to you is already so bad i can't stand it, please you have to see that this isn't helping anyone. He constantly makes you feel dysphoric, constantly makes jabs at who you are, I mean baby he makes fun of you for just existing. Trust me when I say he deserves what's coming to him and I'll be damned if I miss out on givin' it to em.”
his accent got thicker the more heated he got, and peter would be lying if he said it didn't make the idea of flash getting his ass handed to him a little more appealing.
“Okay, maybe I won't fight it as much... Just don't go overboard... please.”
Before Harley could respond Karen announced it was time for dinner “Boss has a direct message...” Tony's voice began to fill the boy's room “you two lovebirds get out here, Bucky and Nat cooked dinner. Better hurry before Thor and Clint eats it all.”
Harley was up on his feet in no time and normally Peter would be too, but he just looked at Harley with those puppy dog eyes no one could seem to say no to and next thing you know Harley is in the kitchen with Peter clinging to him like a koala… again.
Nat was the first to acknowledge the boys, she smiled at the sight before talking to peter “Эй,Малыш паук, слышал, у тебя сегодня был тяжелый день?“
Peter got off of Harley and smiled at Nat “мама паук! я сделал, но теперь я в порядке” after he and Nat talked Pepper popped in and gave him a kiss on the cheek before going to sit at the table. Once everyone was sat around the table, they were all ready to dig in, Pepper and tony were at the head of the table, Peter and Harley to the left, Steve and Bucky next to Harley, Sam and Thor at the end, then on the right Bruce, Loki, Nat, Wanda and Clint all squeezed in.
After the author got the seating arrangement set up, they all started talking about their day. The lively chatter started to die down as Tony announced he had something to say, he turned to peter a mischievous glint in his eye and peter knew immediately what he was going to say. “Peter has a field trip!! Guess where, guess where“ he said, laughing while the others stared at him.
“He has a field trip to the fucking tower; can you believe it??” there was nothing but silence for a few seconds before everyone burst into laughter. Peter wished for what felt like the millionth time that day, that the ground would open up and swallow him whole.
After the laughter died down, they obviously had questions. They all started speaking at once and Peter instinctively curled into Harley before saying “I really don't want this to be a big deal, but most of my class doesn't believe that I have an internship here so I'm giving you all semi-free reign.”
everyone stilled, how could they not believe him? It was glaringly obvious that he really did work with stark. Who would be stupid enough- ”they WHAT” Tony all but yelled, ”what do you mean they don't believe you? Who exactly does not believe you?”
Peter ran a hand over his face and Harley wrapped his arm around the boy's waist as a form of comfort. “It really isn't that big of a deal, it was just some of the students and Mr. Harrington.”
“Your fucking teacher doesn't believe you??? After all the shit I signed ??? not even just the documents, but you are legally my son, so how the fuck could they be so stupid that they don't think you actually know me.” Peter just shrugged, it felt like he had been over this a million times already, he didn't want to do it again. At least not right now.
Tony seemed to notice and turned to the rest of the table, “We are going to make them realize this was fucking stupid.” and the plotting began.
After dinner Peter and Harley offered to wash up but Bruce and Thor had already started. They seemed so domestic; it was hard to remember that Thor was a literal god and Bruce had an angry green dude living in him. The two boys sat in the kitchen for a little while giggling over Thor's mannerisms and how soft Bruce looked every time Thor said something funny.
Harley nudged Peter with his shoulder and whispered “that's going to be us one day" with the softest look on his face. A dark blush erupted on Peter's face and It took everything in him not to propose right then and there, instead he leaned his head on Harley's shoulder and prayed they would get that future.
Later that night they were in Peter's room curled up together talking about what they thought Friday would ensue. “I don't know what they are planning exactly yet but i would be lying if i said i didn't want to be a part of it.'' Peter groaned and buried his head in Harley's chest.
“I know you don't want anything to happen darlin’ but I already told you earlier they're gonna get what's coming to em, but we don't need to worry bout nothin right now, okay? You still have a while till it's time for that and it's been a long day, so let's get some sleep hm?” he chuckled as he realized the smaller boy had already drifted to sleep. Harley laid there for a bit listening to Peter's soft breaths before drifting off himself.
