'What the hell' Lucas thinks to himself as he's woken up to the faint sound of scratching, he looks out his bedroom window to see at least two zombies a few morse off in the distance. Scratching at the neighbor's house. "Ah shit dude wake up, wake up!" He says frantically as he shakes JJ awake and grabs his gun. "Huh what?" JJ says as he rubs his eyes and sits up "Zombies dude." Lucas whispers and JJ jumps to look out the window. "Shit okay uhh.. That's too many for us dude we gotta leave or something." JJ says, yeah they can take one or two but he sees at least five.. Over the past few days there's been more zombies in the area and soon it'll probably be overrun.
"Fuck okay how do we pull this off?" Lucas asks as they both quietly stand at the front door trying to create some kind of plan. "Okay, let's put all our stuff in a pile so it's easy to grab, you pull the truck around and protect me while I move everything in the truck okay?" JJ proposes earning a smile and nod from Lucas. The boys quickly raid the house, grabbing everything of importance and setting it in a huge pile in front of the front door. "Okay i'll go get the truck." Lucas says as he opens the door and runs towards the truck, quickly opening the door and hot wiring it, somehow the zombies don't notice and continue to mind their own business. JJ runs in and out of the house, grabbing as much as he can and setting it in the truck, Lucas stands beside him with his gun raised, not letting anything get to JJ. They safely pack up everything and hop in the truck, Lucas doesn't seem too sad about leaving his house.
"Can I ask a question?" JJ asks as Lucas drives to god knows where, trying to find a place for them to stay. "Go for it," Lucas replies. "Why don't you seem sad about leaving the house? I mean I only stayed for a week or two and I'm sad about it." JJ asks, looking over at Lucas "Bad memories I guess, my dad was shitty when I was a kid. The house was the last reminder of him I have.. I'm glad it's gone." Lucas says, his voice doesn't sound sad or angry, more relieved and carefree. "I'm sorry.. I probably shouldn't have asked." JJ replies, making things slightly awkward. "Nah you're good, how about you? You didn't seem to have too much problem leaving your house either.." Lucas asks. "About the same thing I guess.. My mom sucked, I had good memories with my siblings but after all the stuff.. That happened, I couldn't stay there anymore." JJ says trying his best not to tear up. Lucas doesn't respond, he just reaches his hand over and gives JJ's knee a sympathetic rub.
"Alright take your pick.." Lucas says as he and JJ drive on a country road, a few large farm houses lined up to their left. "How about that one?" JJ says as he points to a large blue house with an RV parked to the side. It looks empty, all the houses do. JJ starts to wonder if everyone else just fled, maybe they're the only people left for miles. Lucas pulls into the driveway of the home, grabbing the gun out of the truck door and turning the truck off. JJ grabs his axe and they head towards the RV first. "What the hell do you boys think you're doing?" a grumpy voice asks, they jump and instinctively raise their weapons. It's an old man, he has a shotgun in his hand. "Shit i'm sorry sir, our old house got overrun with zombies and we had to find another place to live. We'll leave, We didn't mean to intrude." JJ says, dropping his weapon and raising his hands in the air. To their surprise the old man lowers his weapon. "So you've seen 'em too?" He asks the boys. "The zombies? Yeah we've seen them.. Killed a couple." Lucas says, in a voice that's practically saying "I could kill you too if I wanted to."
"Oh, hello boys!" An old woman pops her head out of the RV to greet them. "Hello.. Maam." JJ says while he looks at Lucas with a confused expression on his face. "Theo you better not be giving these sweet boys a hard time." The woman says to the old man in a scolding manner. "I ain't givin 'em a hard time Dottie, just making sure they ain't here to rob us." The old man says with a sigh. "C'mon in boys, I'm making dinner!" Dottie says as she waves her hand gesturing for them to come inside the rather small RV. JJ and Lucas give each other a concerned look before Lucas shrugs and walks up the RV steps past Theo. JJ follows him and is greeted by the smell of chicken when he walks in, Dottie seems to have some kind of chicken soup cooking on the tiny stove. "So how do we know we can trust you boys.. Haven't seen another living soul in weeks, other than those damn zombie things." Theo says as he pulls out a cigarette carton from his pocket. "I promise we're not here for anything but shelter, we have a truck full of stuff we're willing to share if you let us stay here, robbed a Walmart after we saw the first zombie." JJ says sitting across the table from Theo, Lucas nods in agreement. "Hm, i'll have to take a look later." Theo says with a small grunt. "Theodore if you dont stop being grumpy to these boys. They're just kids, probably scared out of their mind." Dottie says as she reaches over and smacks Theo in the back of the head with a hand towel.
"Here you go boys, here's some dinner!" Dottie says as she hands the boys and Theo a bowl full of chicken soup. Lucas smells it before taking a bite, making sure she didn't poison it or something. They all eat together at the table, it's refreshing to have more people with you, the bigger the group the safer you feel, but Lucas can't shake the feeling of something being suspicious. They all finish eating and Theo stands up "Let's see that truck you mentioned." He says as he grabs his gun and opens the door to the RV. He walks to the truck and opens the door, taking a good look at all their stuff, small containers filled with soup, a big metal pot, bags of clothes, gallons of water and some more random items scattered around the backseat. "Hmm, they don't got nothing suspicious, Dottie." He yells behind him "I said they wouldn't, they just need a place to stay." She yells back with a scoff. "Alright, I guess you boys can stay with us. But you get the RV till we can really trust ya." He says to the boys, They both sigh in relief, glad they find some place to stay. "No the hell they won't Theo." The boys tense up again, scared she's gonna make them find someplace else, "We got 6 bedrooms. They're staying in the house." She continues, scolding Theo. He lets out a groan "Whatever go pick a bedroom good lord dottie." He says as he walks towards the house.
JJ and Lucas both walk inside. "This is ours. There's more upstairs and down here, plenty of bathrooms just find 'em. Set the soup and food in the fridge, the rest just put in your room." Theo says as he walks towards his bedroom closing the door behind him. "I'm sorry about him, he's not the most trusting. You boys are welcome to stay here as long as you'd like as long as there's no funny business." Dottie says as she walks in behind them "How do you guys have power?" JJ asked her "Oh, this house has solar panels up on the roof! Pretty cool huh?" She tells them in a playful tone. The boys walk upstairs and pick a large bedroom, it's pretty basic but very spacious and has a connected bathroom to it. They both run out to the truck and start bringing inside all their belongings, putting the food items in the kitchen like Theo instructed them, setting the rest of the stuff in their room.
"God damn that was a workout" Lucas says as he flops onto the bed. "God yeah, i dont think ive ever gone up and down stairs that much." JJ says while laughing, laying down beside Lucas. Lucas pulls out his cigarette carton and lighter from his pocket "Wait dude, let's ask them if we can smoke first, don't wanna be rude." JJ says and Lucas gives him an eye roll and nod, "Um miss?" JJ says timidly, gaining the attention of Dottie "What's wrong sweetie? And you can call me granny." She says with a sweet smile "I was wondering if we could smoke? If not, that's completely okay." JJ asks. "Of course you can! You boys are a little young but I can't imagine what you've been through.. Just do it on the porch or something okay? Don't want that smell inside." She says as she points to the front door. They both thank her and head outside, sitting down on the rocking chairs. "You boys smoke too?" Theo asks, making them jump as they are alerted of his presence. "Oh yeah.." JJ replies as Lucas hands him a cigarette.
"So.. tell me what you saw. Thought i was the only person who saw these things." Theo asks them. "Well, one kinda killed my little sister, it bit my brother as he was trying to help her and uh.. He killed himself." JJ says as he holds the green rock in his pocket. "I'm sorry.." The old man says as JJ tries not to tear up. "What about your family kid?" Theo asks as he looks over at Lucas "Oh uh, don't really have any, haven't seen my dad in years. Mom died when I was born." Lucas replies as he gives a weak smile. "Damn so you kids just have each other huh?" Theo asks them with a concerned look on his face. "Yeah.. just us" JJ says as he smiles up at Lucas.
