Keeping The Faith
Murdoch stood listening to the church bells ring out; the call to bring the papists of Toronto flooding to the doors for mass. There was a time when Murdoch would have watched, wistful and wishing he didn't have to be on duty. But, those days were gone, buried under his love for Julia Ogden and the knowledge that she had not only had sex outside of wedlock, but also had an abortion. It was sinful, and illegal, and yet he couldn't bring himself to condemn her the way he should. Nor could he believe that any just and loving God would reject her. It was unfathomable and yet that was what he had been taught since he was a small child experiencing mass for the first time. There was no way to reconcile the two and while he was in fear for his immortal soul his heart wanted Julia and he was beginning to think that an eternity in hell might just be worth it.
