Chapter 1
The environment was crowded, everyone gathered around a group and guns pointed. Damn.
I kept my gun ready as I pushed people ahead of me, not because they were going to attack, but because, as Tommy always said, to show authority. The last person I saw in front of me when I stepped out was not a group, it was two people. One was a little girl, about the same age Joel took us from the Fireflies, maybe a little older, and her brown hair in a messy mess. The other was a brunette, a young woman about the same age as Ellie and me, with short curly hair scattered around her face. Her face was dirty, but the glint in her brown eyes was on her, outshining the little girl, and controlling the surroundings with a protective, savage demeanor. And she was so… Beautiful.
“Were you bitten?” Of course they weren't bitten, damn. What was I thinking? My eyes stayed on her, and when her eyes met mine, she said, "Of course not." “Irina and I both defended ourselves, but we couldn't survive outside any longer, FEDRA directed us to you.” FEDRA had directed them to us. Great. “Why did they refer you to us? Isn't there another group?" At Ellie's gruff voice, I turned my stern gaze to her, realizing that I was still holding my gun in the air. “Enough, Ellie,” I said. “Dina, take her away.” Dina nodded and grabbed her secret-girlfriend's hand and started tugging, a moment later a deep voice came from behind me. “Put the gun down, kiddo.”
One of his hands was in his pocket as Joel approached us, and one hand was holding his gun by his leg. His eyes turned to me, winked secretly as we had done since we were little, and turned to the newcomers. "Welcome." I had never seen him accept so easily before, even though I couldn't help my surprise, I was doing my best to keep my face straight. “Jane, take them home please.” My astonishment was growing more and more each moment, placing my gun on my waist and stretching out my hand towards the road, I said, "Go on." All eyes were on us, but my eyes were on Kate, who was walking with her chin in the air with her strong gaze and her seemingly unshakable body.
