Tears. A face. A movie projector, somewhere in the back of his mind, playing a reel in a theater.
A voice in the back of his mind. A friend. Friend.
Where was he? Angela? F— no, E Corp? Wait, which was it? And why’s Darlene here—
She had tears in her eyes, and that grounded him. The room suddenly came to focus; the steady beeping of hospital equipment, the scratching bed sheets, his own injuries. And her face, suddenly going from twisted up in tears, to realization. She leaned closer, searching him. He held his breath.
