Dreaming
It’s been a month since Oliver left Penelope at Mystic Falls, and since then she’s been pushing off the enrollment, deciding not to enroll earlier than planned, just a few more days and she would have her tour of the school and her classes. She’s been dreading it really. Not because she doesn’t want to go but because she’s gotten used to her weekly grocery runs, and business trips to New York, to her freedom and not answering to anyone. Nightly conversation with Nicholas about the things happening back home, about everything really. She didn’t want to put a to that earlier than planned, not even for a pretty girl like Josette Saltzman, but seeing her again was one of the few things she looked forward to.
Earlier in the week
“I hate them” Penelope stared at their parent portrait hanging above the company mission statement. She turned back to Nicholas.
“Your parents?” she shook her head in agreement.
“That’s a first. It’s always the council you’re pissed at.”
“Well yeah, they decided my entire future for me. Nic I- I did all this. The goddamn battles for my hand, the rituals, the training since I could walk because of them but I understood that. I don’t understand my parents.”
“No offense but they will never explain their reasoning to you or anyone, about why and what they do. Why is that pissing you off now?”
“Things change don’t they? I grew up. They practically handed me over to the council, for the elders to dictate everything about me. I forgave them for that but for this, to push me out of my own legacy one they forced me into. I can’t get over that. I thrived, I passed every test thrown at me. I gave up everything and did whatever the wanted. Hell, I almost-.”
“I proved myself. But My parents sent me away within a minute of being home after years! They have no right” Penelope’s voice was wavering. She scoffed and cleared her throat. And began again.
“They are my people to protect. I am sixteen not helpless. The council made sure of that. And now mom and dad went off and pissed them off after everything I have done to keep the peace.” Nicholas stifled a laugh. He understood where his niece was coming from. Her entire work and sacrifice for nothing, but it wasn’t like she didn’t drag her feet through the mud.
“ Okay fine. I piss them off less now” Penelope showed a sliver of a smile. “Either way I did what was required of me and more when I wanted.”
“You’ve suffered a lot. I know that Penelope but think of this as a break from all of it. You can finally-”. Penelope cut Nicholas off. She clearly saw she wasn’t getting her point across.
“I am not looking for some pity points Nic. It doesn’t matter what has happened anymore. I just need to know it was worth it. I need to be there, not in mystic falls.”
“How are you supposed to protect them if you're dead, you aren’t even done with high school yet. It’s one year, you have been through sixteen doing things you didn’t want to, what’s one more?.”
“How can my people trust me if I run at the first sign of danger, Nic come on. You can’t tell me that you are with them on this.
“It's not your war to fight Penelope. They started this, it’s their job to end it. To leave you a new start. And
you know better than anyone, you aren’t the leader yet not until you perform that ceremony.
“I know.”
“That’s not your only legacy either. Just live a normal supernatural life while you can”.
“I’ll be on the voice conference on Thursday. Send me updates.’
“I will.”
