Important Mission
Chapter 2:
Blair checked the mirror one final time before she slipped out of her apartment. Dark hair, pale skin, blue eyes with huge dark circles looked back at her. Her attempt to cover them today had been poor at best but she didn’t really remember what she looked like when she wasn’t tired and her head wasn’t throbbing. Sliding on a pair on sunglasses next to the door she gave the mirror one last glance, nodded, and walked out the door.
Stepping out into the New York streets she immediately felt more like herself, confident and assured. She joined the crowd walking on the sidewalk and let her power free a bit more, scanning the minds of those around her. Like most mornings she sensed nothing amiss, people thinking about being late to work, enjoying the taste of their morning coffee, driving their children and spouses to school. Blair loved mornings, the minds of the people on the street allowed her to practice and release her powers, but everyone was still groggy enough that she could mindcast without feeling like there were hundreds of voices screaming inside her head.
Turning the corner, Blair contemplated buying a coffee at the local shop on the street as the woman who had just exited the shop hummed with delight in her thoughts. Blair reached into the forefront of her mind and tasted the coffee like it was on her own lips, French Vanilla, and it did taste quite good.
A car whizzed by and Blair shook her head to clear her mind, reining in her powers. She had to stay focused, today was potentially the most important mission of her life.
After successfully hailing a cab, she stepped out into the street, opened the door, and climbed inside.
“Hi, could you take me to Horizon Labs please?” she asked the cabbie.
“Sure, thing Miss. On your way to work?” asked the man.
“Oh, I have an interview there today actually” she replied sticking to her story.
