Romeo
She should have known this was a bad idea.
All she had wanted was a nice evening out for her birthday. She had thought she’d gotten it when Coulson had shown up with tickets to the theater for not only her and Tony, but all the Avengers, significant others included, and Coulson’s new team of agents, Skye, Ward, May, and FitzSimmons. Even Director Fury was tagging along (he’d gifted her with a very nice tennis bracelet as well). They were going to go see Romeo and Juliet. Jane had squealed like a fangirl when Pepper had told her and immediately pulled Thor aside to explain her favorite Shakespeare play.
As Pepper helped Tony with his tie that night, she had practically begged him not to start anything childish during the show. They were all being extra careful not to be spotted by the paparazzi and to have a quiet evening. One stray thought through Clint or Tony’s heads and that could all go down in flames.
“Don’t worry, Pep,” he assured her, pressing a quick kiss to her forehead. “Everything will be fine.”
She sighed, not completely convinced.
And now she knew why.
It began when Tony had gotten up out of his seat right before the balcony scene. She hissed at him to sit back down and not disturb anyone.
“Relax, Pep,” he whispered, still maneuvering past Thor and a very annoyed Jane. “I just need to use the little scientist’s room.”
She sighed in exasperation as he disappeared and turned back to the epic romance unfolding in front of her. It was more tragedy than romance in her opinion but she wasn’t about to nitpick her birthday present. And she was actually enjoying herself. Until Tony appeared mid-stage, dressed in his Iron Man suit, sans helmet. Grinning manically up at the balcony where Pepper sat gaping, He raised his hands and did a half-assed attempt at Romeo’s lines, causing most of the audience to start chuckling. Cameras were flashing left and right as Pepper slumped in her seat, trying to hide her bright red face.
From beside her, Clint and Natasha were failing to stifle their laughter. She felt them tugging at her arms until she stood and they led her to the edge of the balcony, abandoning her as a spot light turned her way. She glared daggers down at her boyfriend only for him to continue smirking back. His hands turned to face palms down at his sides and a second later he was hovering above the stage, cameras clicking off at an even more rapid pace as he gently glided over the front audience to hover in front of Pepper.
“What the hell are you doing, Tony?” she hissed, more than a little upset at the turn of events.
He smirked, “I needed to make this memorable.”
“Make what memorable? You can barely remember my birthday anyways. I doubt this will help.”
“Not memorable for me. And who said anything about this being about your birthday?”
Her eyes narrowed in confusion, make his smirk grow.
“Virginia Potts,” Tony announced loud enough for the whole hushed theater to hear. “Pepper, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”
Her jaw dropped. Did he really just say that? “Wh-what?”
“Will you marry me?” Dammit, he was still smirking.
“I-I,” she glanced around her. Cameras and phones were all pointing in their direction, including a camcorder Coulson had pulled out of nowhere. All her friends, even Fury (and wasn’t that just a tiny bit unnerving), were grinning encouragingly at her. When she turned back to Tony, she noticed a little velvet box sitting on the balcony between them. Where did that come from?
Tears began to form in her eyes as she smiled up at her boyfriend, her fiancé, “Yes. Yes, of course I’ll marry you.”
Tony smiled brilliantly, leaning forward to scoop up his soon-to-be-wife. With a swift maneuver he had the ring on her finger and a kiss on his lips as cheers erupted around them, deafening the entire theater.
