Chapter 5
The bunny listened to the kitten talk about her vacation, how her heat hit just a few days in and they really didn’t get to see most of the things they planned for a few days while they stayed in the hotel to take care of her. The bunny loved listening to her best friend, but there was a thought lingering in the back of her mind. How the human knew her.
“So what did you do?” Bora asked her.
“You know… Sessions here and there…” She shrugged. “I hung out with that puppy from the cafe… Met her friends…” She muttered.
“Oh? Are they more puppy hybrids? You know how they are,” Bora laughed while waving her hand.
“They were humans,” the bunny mumbled.
“Oh… how… how did that go?” The kitten’s ears dropped, knowing the bunny’s disdain for humans.
“She said she knew you.”
“I know a lot of humans…”
“Siyeon? I think her name was?” The bunny’s ears dropped, frowning as she bit her lip.
“Oh! Singnie!” Bora smiled, ears perking up at the name. “She’s a good human. Yubin works with her company,” she waved her hand again, not entirely subsiding Minji’s worries.
“I’m home!” Yubin called out, earning a glance from both hybrids. “Are you two sober?” She asked while taking off her suit jacket.
“Yes,” Bora laughed. “Why? Jealous that we would have a good time without you again?” She smirked.
“No, that way I can get earplugs and let you guys at it again.” Yubin leaned over the couch, pressing a gentle kiss to her wife’s head. “How’ve you been Minji?” She asked.
“I’ve been okay.” Her voice was quiet, eyes landing on the hand that was patting Bora’s head. She knew the kitten loved gentle head pats, Minji had even done it a few times just to make her happy, but the entire action felt more ownership than love and affection.
“That’s good. Did Bora show you what she got you when we were away?” Yubin asked, halting her movements, earning a warning growl from the kitten. “Sorry,” she chuckled before continuing her actions.
“Yeah, I told her it’ll have to be delivered… I can’t entirely take a painting like that on the bus,” The bunny sighed. “I should go, I’ve been tired lately,” She mumbled.
She wasn’t tired. She just couldn’t stand seeing whatever goes on between the two. Fun fucking Bora was one thing, but seeing whatever intimate relationship she had with a human was another.
“Text me when you get home please…” Bora frowned.
“Why don’t I drive you home?” Yubin offered, only to see her wife shake her head. “What?” She frowned.
“Thanks but I’ll be okay,” Minji said clearly while gathering her things.
Her walk to the bus stop always led her to the cafe, allowing her to peek in and see Yoohyeon chatting with that blonde woman. Siyeon. She wondered if that was the crush she had been talking about that night, and honestly, it made her stomach turn.
Hybrids and humans.. it wasn’t supposed to happen.
Hybrids weren’t even supposed to be a thing, but of course, it happened by some weird genetic evolution defect that caused them to be like this.
Now she had to suffer her life of being a coherent bunny that needed a job to live and needed to pay taxes and needed to just suffer in the world that people claimed to love so much.
The bunny sat at the bus stop, frowning at the entire idea of her spending the whole day by herself again. She thought she would like the freedom of making her own schedule, making loads more money than she ever thought of, but she was bored during the day now. Bored with the whole idea of spending time with Bora.
Not that she disliked hanging out with the kitten… But Bora’s tastes were much, much more expensive while Minji preferred her simple lifestyle.
So she decided to start looking for a job again. A normal, mundane, boring office job.
She landed an interview a week later, allowing her to put her pantsuit back on and make her way to the office building in the city. She researched the company, learning that they were certainly more progressive and had more hybrids on their team rather than a bunch of humans. It made her feel a lot better that she wouldn’t be the only one.
The office had a few kittens, some puppies, and most humans, but a lot more than just the one that she was used to. It honestly made her happy to see the blend, the way everyone was actually happy. Something she thought she could mesh well with. At least to a point. No one needed to know her on a personal level.
“I see on your resume that you have a few months where you don’t have a job listed?” The manager frowned.
“Ah, yes, well… I took time off. To… Find myself,” Minji lied. It was bullshit, but it was what companies wanted to hear. Wanted to hear that their employees were already finding themselves prior to applying for the job so they can work tirelessly.
“Oh? Well, I’ve seen people take years to do that,” He chuckled.
“Well, I could only get so far,” Minji faked a laugh, just trying to get through the interview.
“And did you find yourself in those few months?” He asked.
“I don’t think I entirely did… But I certainly found who I don’t want to be in that time.” She explained. Vague, but enough. More than enough.
“Can you start Monday?” He asked.
“I would be delighted.”
Minji did in fact start that Monday, allowing her to be walked through the company, given a tour of where everything was, how things worked, who people were, and everything else between. The manager made sure to introduce the others in her little department before they stumbled on someone Minji really didn’t expect to run into.
“And this is Gahyeon, she’s just an intern this year, but we’re hoping to have her on the team by the time she’s finished with college,” Her manager smiled. “You’ll sit with her for the basic application training, learn the systems today, and then tomorrow we’ll have your office set up.” He added. “Gahyeon, this is Minji, she’ll be working with you on scheduling and contacting clients.”
“Hi!” Gahyeon smiled.
Minji stared at the other hybrid’s ears, watching how they stood up so proudly while Minji did everything in her power to keep hers down.
The manager left them alone, allowing Gahyeon to pull a chair into her small office. Minji took a seat next to the younger hybrid, watching her explain everything, only stopping to let Minji take a few notes.
“You’re a bunny hybrid too?” Gahyeon whispered, noticing how Minji’s ears stayed down.
“Hm? Oh, yeah,” Minji muttered while writing.
“Your ears are long and pretty… I wish mine were like that,” Gahyeon whispered.
Minji looked up, seeing the other bunny’s ears drop. They were a grey color with pink inside, and they honestly were pretty short. But still enough to be considered average.
“I… I wouldn’t compare…” Minji whispered.
“Why not? You’re like gorgeous and I’m just an average bunny…” She mumbled. “Sorry!” She quickly stated. “Just… Haven’t seen another bunny hybrid lately… And I only see the ones on tv so, hard to not compare you know?” She shrugged.
“I get it,” Minji sighed. “A lot of bunny hybrids stay in the hybrid areas, safer for them that way,” She explained.
“Oh, like hybrid communities?” Gahyeon asked.
“No… Hybrid parts of town… Like… East Main and South Central,” Minji whispered.
“Those are the bad parts of town… Why would they… Oh….” Gahyeon’s ears fell flat, now realizing what she meant. “Sorry… I… Have human parents, so I don’t really…” She frowned.
“It’s okay, not every bunny gets treated the same.”
