Chapter 2

Minji woke up with a pounding headache, her face stuck to the leather couch under her, and she wondered just exactly where she was. She didn’t have a leather couch, and she certainly didn’t have large enough windows to bring in so much light. She squinted, trying to look around and figure out just exactly where she ended up. Until she felt the very soft and very fluffy rug underneath her.

Her ears picked up on the sound of paper crinkling behind her, causing her to turn and see the one person she really didn’t want to see so early in the morning.

“I’m sorry Yubin…” Minji mumbled.

“All good,” Yubin answered while taking a sip of her coffee. Her attention was still on the newspaper in her hands, which Minji was grateful for. “Your shirt is on the armrest.”

“My what…?” Minji looked down and immediately covered herself, frowning when she realized her entire top half was bare. She quickly found her bra, put it on, and then located her shirt.

Her entire mind was foggy, her entire world was a little dizzy and her head was pounding. Her mouth was dry, her stomach was in knots, and she just felt horrible.

“Where’s Bora?” Minji frowned.

“In the guest room,” Yubin explained. “You were both very loud last night.”

Minji was grateful that Yubin never cared about their antics. In fact, she was one of the very few humans Minji trusted.

“Sorry about that… She… She got the drinks,” Minji sighed while walking around the couch.

“I know.” Yubin still hadn’t looked at her, keeping her focus on the article she was reading. “Aren’t you going to be late for work? It’s nearly ten,” She finally glanced over at the bunny, watching her groan.

“I quit my job yesterday…” Minji frowned.

“Sounds a bit unprofessional to give a moment of notice…” Yubin frowned.

“There was a guy harassing me and all the other women, but the second the only hybrid speaks up and tries to file a formal complaint, I get told it’s not a big deal and that I should just take it.” Minji hated explaining the story over again, but Yubin was a businesswoman. She knew the ins and outs. The formalities of everything and how delicate the workplace world was.

“Ah, makes sense now,” Yubin whispered. “Coffee is still fresh,” She pointed at the pot, and Minji whispered a small thank you as she made her way into the kitchen.

Yubin, being a human, had to earn Minji’s trust. It wasn’t easy to earn it despite being Bora’s wife. She learned of this human years ago when Bora was set up on a blind date. She heard Bora gush all about her and talk about how her interests were actually amazing and that she was the best person in the world, but Minji always doubted it. Finding reasons to believe that Yubin was just like everyone else.

But with every passing day, Yubin would make sure to go at Minji’s pace, listening to her and watching her well. So much so that it seemed as if Yubin was also courting the bunny as well as the kitten. Which was exactly why Minji trusted Yubin.

“If you need another job, my company always has a spot open.”

“Thanks… But I have my side gig still,” Minji shrugged while taking a sip of the still-hot beverage. She let out a small hum, smiling to herself at the taste of the coffee.

“Right… That,” Yubin mumbled.

Minji glanced up at the human, seeing the unchanged expression on her face.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Minji frowned.

“Nothing, just forgot you did that,” Yubin shrugged. “Bora never talks about it as much anymore, so I thought you gave it up,” She added, finally looking at the bunny again. “Is that bad to assume?” She asked.

“No…” Minji whispered.

She left a little while after, making the trek back home across town.

Every human had given her a reason to doubt their humanity. With every little step the hybrid community made toward having a better life, humans would knock them down and force them right back to square one.

And she hated how it was. Hated that this was what her life was.

She made her way through the city, settling on getting a quick bite to eat at a nearby cafe. Usually, she would’ve gone to hybrid-only places, but her stomach was growling and she needed something in her besides coffee.

The inside of the cafe was decent, with humans and hybrids mingling, but nothing of what Minji was used to. These were higher-up hybrids. Ones who were stupidly rich. Bora’s kind. High society puppy and kitten hybrids who were supposed to be better than the others.

“Next?”

Minji stepped forward, seeing a tall woman who frankly smelled off to the bunny hybrid.

“What can I get you?” The woman smiled.

That was when Minji saw it. A puppy hybrid. She saw the ears perking up, the familiar canine teeth. It made her feel a little better that, the hybrid taking her order, seemed normal and quite frankly a little lower class than those around her.

She ordered a quick sandwich and a tea, handed over her card, and watched the hybrid work. Once she had her card back, she stepped over to the pickup area, seeing a woman with platinum blonde hair standing next to her while scrolling on her phone. She seemed striking, and honestly a little intimidating, but it wasn’t like she would ever come by this place again. It was just on the way home and she needed something.

“Here you go Siyeon!” The same puppy hybrid handed over a larger cup of coffee, catching the platinum blonde-haired woman’s attention.

“Thanks, Yooh,” The woman smiled. “See you tomorrow!”

Minji could see her tail wagging as the puppy watched the woman, completely enamored with the human.

She hated seeing it.

It wasn’t that she was against hybrids being with humans, it just didn’t sit right. She didn’t like the fact that these humans collectively were horrible. She knew that there were some good humans… Good humans like Yubin. But she had her firm beliefs and didn’t trust humans right away.

“And here you go,” The same puppy hybrid held the small to-go cup with a little white bag toward the bunny hybrid, same smile, but no tail wag.

“Thank you.” Minji took the items and walked out, happy to finally leave the high-class nonsense. She ate her sandwich while waiting for the bus, taking small sips of her tea here and there. She just wanted to go home and wash the night off of her. She wasn’t entirely sure if she was ready to do anything else, but she knew that being day jobless was a little freeing.

And she liked it a lot.
