Chapter 1
Minji brushed through her hair, being careful of her long ears that blended well with her dark hair. Minus the white tip at the end of her left one, but other than that, she attempted to make herself look more human. She hated her species and wished she had been born something else.
When she finally left her apartment, she rushed to the subway, nearly missing her train. She let out a breath, happy that she made it. She was quiet, deciding to scroll on her phone while she waited the fifteen minutes it took to get to her office.
She didn’t know why she glanced up when the train stopped, but she watched another bunny hybrid walk on, holding a young kit’s hand as she tried to look for a seat.
“Here,” Minji waved her down, giving up her seat, and picked up her bag for the two to sit down.
“Thank you,” the bunny hybrid smiled at her.
Minji gave a polite smile, eyes glancing down at the little bunny who was staring at her in awe. She felt a little nervous, but she noticed the little bunny admiring her attire, and she couldn’t help but feel her cheeks warm.
“Mommy, I’m going to be a lawyer just like this lady!” The kit chuckled.
“She’s not a lady,” The mother chuckled.
“Yes, she is… I don’t see anything…” The kit frowned.
Minji let out a small laugh, lifting her ears slightly just to reveal she was one of them. She watched as the kit’s mouth dropped open, gasping at the sight of another bunny hybrid.
Bunny hybrids got a bad reputation. Ever since a few had gotten famous for their scandalous acts, all humans had associated bunnies with sex workers. It didn’t help that the media played into the stereotype. All Minji saw these days were bunny hybrids playing the roles of prostitutes or strippers.
And the worse part was, it was only the female bunnies.
Make bunny hybrids were treated differently. Laughed at and mocked. Bullied to the point of no return. Minji vaguely remembered going to school with a male rabbit hybrid like herself, and then one day he just stopped showing up to school.
The human race was disgusting.
Her office was no better.
She had a normal day job in an office, nothing entirely fancy since it was just a paper-pushing, desk-jockey type of deal. And even though she wore pantsuits and dresses with sweaters that covered every inch of her skin… they still made remarks.
In recent years, they didn’t have to disclose they were a hybrid upon applying for jobs. But since Minji had gotten the job prior to the law overturning, everyone knew she was a bunny hybrid.
And the whispering never stopped.
“She tries so hard to be normal but she’s just a dumb bunny…”
“I thought bunnies worked in the… pleasuring business…”
“She’s not fooling anyone, I bet she has some crazy outside life…”
Minji hated the mutterings. Hated the fact that they could literally get away with it since there wasn’t any real law that protected her from office gossip.
By noon she was already seated in her cubicle texting her best friend to meet her at their favorite hang-out when she got off work.
She made her way to the copier, needing to scan a few documents for a client. While she waited she watched the papers feed through the scanner and heard someone approach her.
“So… Bunny… I thought all of you worked for playboy…” One of her human male coworkers chuckled.
“So help me, I will report you to Human Resources again for sexual harassment,” Minji turned to glare at him, watching him hold his hands up in defense.
“Bunny has a bite, must be rough right?” He smirked.
Minji found herself in the HR office within an hour, filing the complaint and watching the woman behind the desk look over everything.
“Now, you do understand that there are no real laws that protect you in this case if it’s a false report right?” The woman frowned.
“Why would I lie about this!?” Minji snapped. “He’s flirted with all the women regardless of hybrid status or not!” She added.
“Right, which would make this his normal behavior… In fact, you should be honored that he assumed you worked in those positions…” She frowned.
“Are you being serious right now?” Minji glared. “You know what…” She whispered before standing up. “I quit. Today. I’m done. I can’t stand working for this company any longer.”
“You can’t just give a few hours' notice like this!”
“I can and I did!” Minji shouted while leaving her office.
By six, she was changed into a simple shirt and shorts and already walking into the bar she texted her best friend to meet at.
“Bunny!” A voice caught Minji’s attention, her ears lifting enough to pinpoint the voice’s location. Her eyes followed, landing on the kitten hybrid that sat at the bar.
“Kitty!” Minji hurried over, embracing her best friend.
“So tell me what was so bad that made you want to get shit-faced at noon…” Bora purred, pushing the second glass of wine toward the bunny hybrid.
“I quit my job,” the bunny sighed.
“Wow, okay, so that would make sense…” Bora mumbled before taking a sip of her wine.
Minji told her everything, explaining the meeting and the aftermath. The kitten hybrid was shocked to hear how her day had gone and really didn’t know what to do or even say after everything had been explained.
“I even saw a kit this morning. Bora, she was so happy to see another bunny hybrid…” Minji whined.
“I bet,” Bora chuckled. “But really… What are you going to do? Rely on the side gig?” She asked.
“Sadly yes.” Minji groaned. “I’ll move it to three times a week instead of just one… get more money that way,” She mumbled.
“Insane that’s how you pay your rent and your real job is just your fun money…” the kitten whispered.
“Well not all of us are trophy wives,” Minji scoffed while glancing down at the wedding ring on her finger.
“I told you Yubin had a friend!” Bora pointed, ears pinned against her head. “And you said no!”
“I didn’t want to be set up with some rich idiot!”
“He wasn’t an idiot and you know that.”
Minji let out a groan, shaking her head before looking around at the people in the bar.
It was one of the few places that were kept hidden from the world of humans. One of the only places Minji truly felt like she belonged. Seeing other hybrids like herself, she actually allowed her ears to perk up whenever they wanted and would let herself be free. But like all places, she would see a few humans, but sometimes they were okay. Only there because their best friend was a hybrid and they didn’t bother her.
Unless they came onto her, then she had an issue.
“I’m going to the restroom,” She muttered before sliding off the stool she was seated on.
“I’m going to order us real drinks then!” Bora called out to her before flagging the bartender down.
The bunny walked into the restroom, letting out a groan as she took her wallet out of her pocket to do her business. She didn’t entirely think too much about anything and continued her little routine. She saw a woman walk in after she left the stall, and continued to wash her hands. Right in the middle of drying them, she heard the same woman call to her.
“Hey!” Minji’s ears turned toward the voice before she could, and immediately she saw the human standing there. Her ears dropped quickly, pinning them down against her head the second her nose caught the human scent. “Is this your wallet?” The woman held the white wallet out toward her, and Minji let out a sigh.
“Yes, thank you…” Minji frowned while taking the wallet from her.
“No problem,” The woman gave her a smile.
Minji made her way out and back to Bora, looking down at the new glass filled with brown liquid.
“Really?” Minji frowned.
“You don’t have a job to go to tomorrow, hard liquor it is,” Bora chuckled.
“Alright… But please… Please make sure I at least make it home tonight?” The bunny pleaded.
“No promises,” Bora chuckled before taking a sip of her drink.
