It's U

Wednesday had never slept in a more comfortable bed. Her bed at home was made from a wooden frame that her father had put together with a few layers of animal hides on top for padding, her pillow was an animal hide stuffed with straw.

Her village didn’t exactly have the money to spend on any proper beds with mattresses or pillows filled with actual cotton.

And she had been perfectly fine with that, she knew certain sacrifices had to be made to keep her people alive.

But now that she knows what an actual bed feels like.

She might never be able to go back.

Wednesday couldn’t remember a moment in her life when she had felt as comfortable and relaxed as she did now. Back home she would always have to get up early, there was always something to take care of, some chore that couldn’t wait, or someone who needed help. But right now it was just her, her thoughts, and sweet silence.

Sadly the peace didn’t last very long at all.

Suddenly she felt someone wrap their arms around her waist, “Good morning baby, did you sleep well?” The goddess rasped out, her morning voice being much lower than her usual high-pitched voice.

The goddess was still clearly half asleep based on how her voice drawled.

Her first instinct was to reach down and push the arms off of herself but Wednesday suddenly remembered where she was and who she was with.

She exhaled briefly before replying “Yes Enid, thank you for asking.”

Wednesday felt the goddess behind her rest her head against her back. If anyone else had ever tried this with her Wednesday would have a knife at their throat the second they felt entitled to touch her, but there wasn’t much she could do in this particular situation.

After all, this wasn’t just anybody. This was Enid, goddess of the moon, and most importantly her wife.

Her wife, who promised she was going to save her people.

It took everything in Wednesday to relax into the goddess's embrace. The other girl was warm, it wasn’t an uncomfortable warmth either. It was the kind of warmth that reminded her of the times she and her brother would lay in the grass field by their home on days when there weren’t too many chores to take care of.

It almost made her want to fall asleep again.

But she knew better than to fall asleep this close to Enid. She had seen what the Goddess was capable of when she was upset and she would rather not do anything that would put her at the receiving end of her anger again.

She had no idea what would set the goddess off next time but would do her best to avoid finding out.

Wednesday looked down at her arm to inspect it for any bruises. Surprisingly there wasn’t a single mark on her from what had happened yesterday.

The brunette felt Enid move around behind her again, “Oh did you there was going to be a bruise or something? Don’t worry, I’d never actually hurt you.”

The blond sat up and grab the arm that she had pulled yesterday gently pulling Wednesday up as well.

Then she started softly kissing Wednesday’s wrist. “I’m sorry, sometimes I forget how fragile humans are, I’ll have to apologize to your parents. Humans are usually fine after being thrown into tables right?”

Wednesday wanted to answer, and she honestly did, but for the first time in her life, she was genuinely speechless. Was this the same girl who had thrown her family into their dining room table yesterday?

She couldn’t be, there was no way.

After a minute she had finally found her voice again, “It’s not something that happens often enough for me to be sure, but I would assume not.”

The goddess stops kissing her wrist and starts blushing clearly ashamed.

“It’s alright, I’ll take care of them. I’ll take care of everything today, you won’t have to worry about anything until you meet the others.”

Enid starts softly stroking Wednesday’s hair, which is something that she does fairly often.

“Your hair is so pretty,” the goddess whispers “When she told me your hair would be pretty I didn’t expect it to be this pretty.”

Wednesday’s brow furrows.

She told me your hair would be pretty.”

What did Enid mean by that?
She gently reaches her hand up to grab Enids, “Who told you my hair would be pretty?”

The blond’s eyes widen and she pulls her hand back suddenly, “No one, no one at all. I just always knew I would marry someone with nice hair, after all, I am a goddess I could have anyone I wanted why would I settle for anything less than the best?”

After her rant, Enid stands up and rushes to the bathroom, “I’m going to go get ready, I have some clothes you can borrow in my closet, you can use the bathroom after I’m done.”

Before Wednesday could process what just happened the bathroom door had been slammed shut.

She stayed on the bed for a while not wanting to leave its comfort before she decided to get something to wear.

Finding the closet took some effort because the door was camouflaged almost completely to the wall.

After prying the closet open Wednesday saw that what she and Enid considered suitable clothes was very different. It looked like a rainbow regurgitated everywhere. Even her shoes were multi-colored or covered in glitter.

After digging to the very back of the closet she finally found a button-up shirt that was a lighter gray color and some black pants. She ran her fingers over the shirt and fiddled with the buttons. While the color of the clothing left much to be desired, Wednesday had to admit that the fabric was softer than anything that she owned.

She ran her hand over one of Enid's more colorful shirts and found it to be just as soft as the one that she was holding.

Was all clothing this soft? Is this yet another thing that she and her family hadn’t been able to afford?

She knew that things were bad but were they really this bad?

She can’t count how many times her shirts had rubbed her skin red or how many times she’d sewn a hole in her shirt shut so her father didn’t have to make her a new one.

“Hey, are you alright?”

Wednesday turns around to see Enid kneeling next to her, she didn’t know when the other girl had gotten there. Hell, she hadn’t even heard the bathroom door open or close.

“Yes, I’m fine. I just,” she lets out a deep sigh “Are most clothes this soft?”

Enid’s head tilts, “What do you mean, all fabric feels about the same right? I mean unless you’re getting the really expensive stuff.”

The blond runs her hand over the sleeve of Wednesday’s shirt, “Oh shit, what is this made of? A potato sack?”

Wednesday lowers her head, not wanting to meet Enid’s gaze.

“You can’t be serious?” Enid’s hand grabs her chin and lifts her head to meet her gaze “No wife of mine is going to walk around wearing a potato sack, I’ll take care of your clothes from now on. Just tell me what you want and I’ll get it for you.”

Enid suddenly pulled Wednesday into a tight hug, “If I knew this is how they were treating you I would have gotten you sooner, ceremony be damned.”

The blond said a few more things but she said them far too quickly and mumbled for Wednesday to understand.

“Alright,” The goddess said finally letting her go after a few seconds “Go get ready, after you’re done we’ll get something to eat then we’ll go down to your village so I can keep my promise.”

The brunette made her way to the bathroom as fast as she could and got ready, in her rush she had almost forgotten to do her braids, almost.

After finally getting ready she went back into the room and found Enid holding up two sandwiches.

“I didn’t know what you liked on yours so I just got you chicken and pesto.”

“Thank you, Enid,” Wednesday said as she went to graciously accept the sandwich.

Only for it to be pulled away from her at the last second.

“About the whole ‘Enid’ thing. You can call me whatever you want when we’re alone but when we’re with my friends or in public you should probably have a pet name or something for me.”

“I’m sorry you’re holding my breakfast hostage because you wish for me to give you a pet name?”

The blond nodded enthusiastically “Yes exactly, you’re so smart.”

The brunette blinked slowly “If I agree will you give me the sandwich?”

She was honestly starving, goddess or not Wednesday was ready to fight Enid for this sandwich.

“She gets the sandwich after she gives her wife a pet name.” Taunted Enid,

“It can be anything like literally anything. Darling, my love, baby, precious. You know normal couple names.”

Wednesday started feeling physically nauseous, she could never understand pet names.  If you loved someone your actions alone should show it, and pet names weren’t exactly unique.

She knew a few people in her village that all called their partners things like ‘baby’ or ‘babe.’ It was hardly a special name if you shared it with half the population.

She’d only ever heard one person come up with a unique nickname for their partner and that was her father.

“Cara Mia,” Wednesday whispered “Will that suffice?”

Enid’s face had turned a dusty shade of red and her breathing halted for a second.

She cleared her loudly before replying “Yes, I guess that will have to do.”

With that taken care of, Wednesday snatched the sandwich out of Enid’s hand and ate it quickly, fearing that the goddess would come up with some other test.

“This is delicious, where did you get it from?”

“Oh you know just a fancy sandwich shop, only the best for my darling.”

Meanwhile, at Yoko and Divina’s void,

Yoko was having a strangely peaceful day!

As the goddess of health and medicine, she watches over millions of doctors, nurses, spiritual healers, pharmacists, scientists, and hell even multi-level marketing schemes.

Every time a new illness of plague is released on the population by her counterpart, she has to study and understand it.

Then slowly feed the information to her blessed so they can learn to cure it.

So she’s usually pretty busy.

But today, there were no new illnesses or plagues, no weird rashes spreading across villages at alarming rates. Everything was perfect! It was just her and her lovely wife.

“Yoko, did you eat my sandwich?”

She turned around to look at her wife, who was holding an empty take-out bag from her favorite sandwich shop.

“No I haven’t eaten anything today Di, I was waiting for you to come back with the food.”

Her Divina let out an exasperated sigh, “Honey, do you know how long I stood in line for those? This is the only place that won’t let gods cut the line!”

She yelled out shanking the empty bag in rage, “I would have gotten you two if I knew you were that hungry.”

“I told you it wasn’t me! You’re the goddess of knowledge, check that giant book of yours out and see if I’m lying!”

“The book of knowledge isn’t supposed to be used for such trivial things, just admit you ate my sandwich!”

Divina started getting closer, still shaking the empty bag to emphasize her point.

“I didn’t eat your sandwich!”

Suddenly her wife’s demeanor changed completely, going from a burning rage to a cold glare.

“ I gave you a chance to tell the truth, now there’s only one thing left to do.”

Her wife inched even closed backing Yoko up against the couch, then she tackled her.

“NO, BABE STOP HAAHAHAHA! I’M GOING TO PISS MYSELF!”

But Divina would not let up on her brutal tickle attack, “Say it! Say you ate my sandwich!”

“HAHAHAHA, NO BABE PLEASE!”

Yoko turned her head to the side and saw a pink slip of paper inside the sandwich bag that was now on the floor.

“WAIT IN THE BAG- HAHAHA, CHECK THE BAG!”

Her wife turned to see what she was looking at and picked up the pink slip, in fancy handwriting, written with a glitter pen, it read.

Took the food, sorry! My darling was hungry and I suck at cooking lol!

Also, I didn’t want to wait in line and I was craving a sandwich.

Anyways, IOU

- LOVE, Enid

Yoko ran her hands down her face and let out a groan, “Fucking Enid.”
