Chapter 2
"don't run away from your mother. I'll miss you too much" Enid said as she was skipping over to her family. She looks so beautiful, Enid thought.. getting one last look at Wednesday. She saw her family. They were all surrounding her brothers. She walked over to them. Murray was the first to notice she was even there. "Hello dear, how are you feeling?" Her father said. She could tell he was trying to avoid staring at her scar. "I'm fine dad. Thank you for asking. I missed you." She said smiling at him. It was true. Out of everyone in her family, she was always closest to her father. "I missed you too, doll." The entire family was looking at her. Her eyes met with her mother. She could see that she had tears forming in the older woman's eyes. She really didn't understand why. It happened to her, not her mother. Esther took two steps toward her. At first Enid thought she was going to give her a hug. A spark of joy lit in her. Maybe it wouldn't be as bad as she thought. Enid held her arms out and then before she knew it a swift crack came down and slapped her clean across the face. It made her fall to her knees. Her brothers and father didn't dare challenge the mother. She heard Esther mutter softly, "look at you, you're hideous. You'll never bring me grand children with a face like that. Your entire purpose is to have wolf pups so our pack can grow. You've ruined everything. And lets not forget to mention our conversation over the phone. You think you're a lesbian? I'm here to tell you, you're not." Esther lowered her head down to Enid, so that only she could hear. "Don't worry, I'll fix that soon enough." Enid cracked her neck and stood up. She had to bite the inside of her mouth to ensure she wouldn't say anything she'd regret later. "Come on. We have a lot to do." And with that, they all followed their mother.
Esther walked over to their car. She told everyone to get in. "where are we going?" Enid said. "Don't ask me questions. I don't even want to hear your voice. You disgust me." Enid again bit her lip and got in. Just for today, they'll leave later, just have to make it today. She whispered something to her father and he started driving. Even her father is too nervous to say anything to her. She peered out the window, They were on the backroads to exit Nevermore. She figured they were just going to go into Jerico, probably to talk to some psychiatrist, knowing her mother. She tried calming her mind with things that comforted her. Of course, the first thing that popped into her mind would be Wednesday. Ever since the night she transformed because of Wednesday, she was all she was able to think about. She knows Wednesday doesn't do relationships and that it would never be more than a silly crush of Enid's, but that doesn't mean she can't still do things to put herself out there. Enid would often call her things like adorable or think of random nicknames to call Wednesday, and even though most wouldn't be able to see it, she can tell Wednesday likes it. Her lip will quiver or she will look away for a moment or pick at the skin around her fingers, that was code for Wednesday was shy. Enid loved flustering Wednesday, even if it was only slightly. It filled her entire body with a thrill. Her mind wonders for a moment.. what would it like for Wednesday to be the one to start things. she feels herself blushing. Wednesday only sees her as a friend. She shouldn't be thinking these things about her best friend. Friend..
She had been so lost in thought thinking about the beautiful raven that she nearly forgot where she was. She looked out the window. They're almost out of Jerico now..? She recognized the road they were on. It was still a trail to get back to Nevermore, but it was very far out there. Where on Earth are they going. Enid starts to panic. Something isn't right. When she looks at her fathers face, he looks like he feels almost guilty. Enid starts immediately looking for an exit. She didn't know what was going on, but she knew she needed to get out of there. "I need to pee" She said. It was the only thing she could think of off the top of her head. "Hold it" Esther hisses at Enid. "I can't mom, I really need to go. I'll go in the car. Please?" Enid could feel her mothers eyes narrow at her. She watches as she taps her husband on the shoulder and signals for him to pull off to the side of the road. "thank you" Enid says as the car slow. She quickly gets out and goes behind a bush. She knows she only has a few minutes to run, and her mothers sense of smell is far beyond her own. She books it as fast as she can back towards Nevermore. Back towards Wednesday. Her mother took her phone, so she had no way of calling for help. She was running as fast as she could. She only made it about 2 minutes before she heard her mother behind her, going double the speed she was. "PLEASE" Enid yells, crying at the top of her lungs. And just like that, Esther caught her. She tackled her to her ground, and Enid screamed in pain. Esther broke her leg to ensure she wouldn't be running away again. Enid's sobs were no use, they were so far out that nobody would her them. Enid still didn't give up. She grows her claws and scratches her mothers arm. Esther grabs her by her hair and begins dragging her back to the car. Enid tries running away again, but its no use. Esther pulls out a lock of Enid's hair, making her scalp bleed. Enid is so physically exhausted, she doesn't try to fight it anymore. She just tries to force herself back to her happy place. She imagines herself cuddled up on Wednesday's shoulder. She would be stroking her hair and whispering sweet nothings into her ears. They would be under the covers, with skin to skin contact. Enids hand would be intertwined with Wednesday's free hand and she would be playing with her fingers. They would be girlfriends and everyone at the school would know. She would press kisses all over her face anytime she wanted and love her all the time without anyone to hold them back. Even in this terrible situation. She always finds herself coming back to Wednesday. She was her saving grace.
Once Enid is thrown into the car she passes out for a while. When she wakes up, she sees that the landscape has changed. She knows where they are heading. They were taking her back to San Francisco. She had no idea why, or what was going to happen to her, but she knew it was going to be bad. This wasn't her first time her mother had acted this way towards her, but this time it felt different. It felt like if Enid didn't give in, she would have killed her. Her brothers and father have been silent the entire trip. Enid didn't blame them though, the last thing she'd want is for them to get thrown into it. She loved them too much. It's just easier for everyone to let her mother do whatever she wanted, and not to ask questions. She looked down at her leg, it was certainly broken. She knew one thing was definite, no matter what was about to happen to her, she would never let it break her. She would always be the sunshine that she has always been. She had to be. She had to be the light in the darkness that was her family life. She could feel the tears begin to form in the corners of her eyes. She didn't know if it was from the pain or from the situation, but she knew she wanted Wednesday. She took a deep breath and wrapped her arms around herself. She knew she probably looked silly, but it was all she could do in this situation. She pictured that it was Wens who was hugging her back, just like she did the night of the Crackstone incident. Enid shut her eyes and tried to sleep some more.
When she awoke for the second time, it was not on her own, but by the force of her mother. She was lifting her up and carrying her out of the car. She knew exactly where she was. It was the place where she had grown up. Her childhood home. It was a medium sized home that had plenty of acres of land in the backyard. It was located in the outskirts of San Francisco. She was surprised when the mother walked right passed the front door and continued into the back yard. she walked for at least a mile into the trees until she got to a small building. This had to be new. It was never there before. Nobody else was with them, it was just her and Esther. She unlocked the building and the sight that Enid saw made her feel sick to her stomach. There were 4 other female family members chained to the wall. They looked tired and exhausted. She sat Enid down and chained her next to a cousin she had only met once. She looked down at her and laughed as she kicked her broken leg. " Don't worry, puppy. We're going to fix you. All of you" she left and Enid heard her relock the door. They were all in the pitch black. There was nothing else in the room that she saw when she first came in. Just them and the chains on the walls. She wanted to scream and yell, but she knew it was pointless. Nobody would hear her from all the way out where they were. Once she knew Esther was gone, Enid finally spoke to the girls in the room. "What the fuck is going on. What is she planning on doing with us?" The silence made the girl feel sick. It was almost like the girls were saying 'you seriously don't know' without saying it. She knew something awful was going to happen, and there was nobody who was coming to save her.
