Chapter 1
You were in the city, specifically, the Battle of New York. Chitauri all around, many endangered and/or dead. Ringing in your ears crashed cars all along the roads. Panic set in as you were trying to escape, as soon as you look up at the blackening sky shooting out mysterious creatures, you see a figure in your peripheral vision walking towards you; your vision was blurry and you thought it was going to hurt you...
You suddenly wake up, chilled and sweating. You assumed you had another dream. Your apartment was empty and messy from where you had passed out on the couch the night before. The TV had turned off and the only light you could view was your phone. It was lit up and buzzing on the coffee table with an unknown number.
What the hell
As you picked up the phone to answer it you glanced up at the time.
Who is trying to get in touch with me at 4:30 AM?
You shrugged it off and let the phone continue ringing out. As soon as it was directed to voicemail, the same number called again. Wanting to go to sleep, you hesitantly answered the phone, and tried your absolute best not to sound like a man.
"Um, hello..." You spoke in a raspy voice.
Static was all you heard for a few moments. Then, muffled screams and cries for help were heard in the background. Suddenly, it all cut out and it sounded like you were connected to another line where a woman spoke.
"Good Morning, am I speaking with Y/F/N ?" The female voice said calmly.
"Yes..." You wavered. After the first part of that call, you were nervous to give any more information about yourself.
"Okay, great! I'm calling to offer you a job, one that will pay a very large sum of money and offer you lots of security." She said matter-a-factly.
"Who is 'we'?" You asked suspiciously.
"I'm afraid we cannot answer that." The woman said.
"Yeah, okay. Nice joke, but it's four in the morning and I have work in a few hours. I'm not interested in whatever car insurance you're trying to -" you said.
The call cut out. Whoever had called you had abruptly hung up. You quickly went to your recent and blocked the number.
I should try to go back to sleep
You grabbed your blankets, phone, and pillow and slowly transitioned from the nearly unbearable couch to your semi-comfortable bed. Tossing your phone on the sheet and then slamming the pillow down. Lastly came the covers, you grabbed them and yanked them to your shoulders trying to warm up.
After scrolling through the internet trying to find something boring enough to put you to sleep, you eventually gave up and tried to close your eyes and count to sixty, five times. Something your mother had taught you when you fought sleep when you were younger. After a few minutes, every thought went dark and you had finally nodded off.
A few hours later...
You rolled out of bed and into the floor. You went straight to the coffee maker before getting into the shower and starting your usual morning routine.
After getting out of the bathroom you threw on a pair of jeans and your favorite blouse. You slipped on your flats and grabbed your freshly brewed coffee. You quickly went around your apartment and tidied up the rooms before you had to leave.
Finally, you were ready to go. You grabbed your keys, phone, and laptop bag and turned to lock the door behind you. You headed down the stairs and started off the walk to your workplace.
It was always a quiet and semi-short stroll. Never too crowded and always pleasant. The Spring trees were blooming and the morning dew was still fresh on the short grass clippings between the sidewalk and the road.
You quickly rounded the corner and viewed the building that you work in. You walked farther until the reached the front door.
"Hey, Y/N!" Someone called out from behind you.
You turned around and slightly flinched, then you recognized that it was your friend Adrian. He had pulled his arm around your shoulder and pulled you into a hug.
Adrian was your closest friend. You were never the type to put your faith or trust in anyone, but he was different. He was outgoing but very trustworthy, even though you'd only been working with him for eight months.
You had only realized how long you'd been hugging and so you let go and flashed him a huge smile.
"Good morning" you grinned.
You two started walking in the building and straight to the elevator, you were having some small talk when you decided to inform him about the call you received earlier this morning. The elevator was empty and you knew no one would eavesdrop.
"So, Adrian I got this weird call this morning. It kind of startled me, I mean first of all... I was alarmed at 4:30 and then as answered the call I heard all these noises."
You said.
He looked at you strangely as you explained the rest of the story, but before he could say anything the door chimed and let you onto your floor. You two went your separate ways for the day.
You went straight to your desk, unloaded your laptop, and began to work. Regardless of how your day began - It was just another usual day at work.
Later that day...
It was nearing time to clock out for the day. You started to pack up your things, today had been very chill and light, as far as the workload. You looked up to wave bye to Adrian, but he was not there. You guess he had already left. You pressed the elevator button, got in, and went to the ground level.
You started on your way home, the street was much more crowded this time of the day as people were heading home. It was still a pleasant walk. You rounded the corner as you do every day. Suddenly you were grabbed by the arm and dragged into an alley, a hand was quickly put over your mouth. You tried screaming and kicking your way out, but you were being well restrained.
You continued to try and break free. All of a sudden you heard a whisper in your ear.
"Hey, Y/N calm down. It's just me."
You turned your head and saw that it was Adrian. Out of all the people who would drag you into a shady alley, why would it be him? He loosened his grip on you and shielded you from something, trying to hide you possibly? You were still very stressed and confused, you could not comprehend why this was happening, but before you managed to get too lost in your thoughts he whispered something else.
"Y/N, I am going to need you to follow my lead. Do everything I say and trust me. I will get you out of this alive."
What?! What does he mean by 'alive'?
"Look, we don't have much time they are following us. I will explain everything, but first I need you and me to walk hand-in-hand. I'll lead you to our getaway car and on the way to our hideout, I will explain it all. I promise, just trust me." he said letting you go completely.
You nodded your head understandingly as tears threatened to spill out of your eyes. You were being kidnapped, you were sure of it. There was no way out, you knew that if you tried to escape you wouldn't make it down the alley.
He grabbed your hand gently and you two started walking out of the alley together. Adrian quickly looked over his shoulder and quickened the pace. He glanced at you, noticing your somber expression, and rubbed his thumb over yours. You looked at him and you both quickly looked away before he spoke again,
"Okay, I see the car. It's a black SUV. Open the door and get in first, I'll follow behind you. Fortunately, we have a rush hour on our side as far as people that walk to work. Big crowds are always easier to deal with when escaping."
You walked to the car quickly and got in like Adrian asked you to. As soon as you opened the door you were greeted by a familiar young woman with red hair. Adrian quickly followed behind you and shut the door before you could make any further contact with her.
The door slammed and the car was almost immediately speeding off.
"Hi, I am Natasha Romanov. You may know me as the Black Widow though. I am sorry about the circumstances of our meet," she quickly flashed a look at Adrian. "but we have a lot of explaining to do. Well, I guess Adrian does since he promised he would tell you." she laughed.
You were so confused and starstruck. Never had you been this close to an Avenger.
"Holy Shit, Hello Ms. Romanov." you blurted out.
"Oh, please just call me Widow," she interjected with a grin on her face.
Adrian cleared his throat.
"I think we need to discuss the real problem at hand. Y/N, there's a lot Nat and I both need to catch you up to speed on," he said looking at Widow.
