Chapter 2
"Where do I begin... Ah, I guess I should start with the fact that I am an undercover agent working directly with the Avengers. I was put into the office to monitor you, and although it has been a pleasure becoming friends with you, the majority of it was staged." Adrian said.
Your expression turned blank.
"But -" you tried to interrupt.
"Please let me finish. I was sent out to protect you, Natasha and I are here to help. When you told me about the call you received this morning I was horrified; I immediately sent for backup. Y/N, HYDRA is following you, S.H.I.E.L.D has been compromised and they are trying to track us all down at the moment. We don't know why they want you, but if we left you for their possession, things would be even worse." he said.
You were still trying to comprehend everything. Instead of being starstruck, you were furious. How could you let someone follow you and watch everything you do?
How could you possibly allow yourself to trust someone and then have them turn out to be a spy...
"Unbelievable." was all you could spit out.
"Told you she would not have a good reaction. What woman wants to be followed and then put into a random car and told that more bad guys are after her?" Widow said to Adrian with a knowing look on her face.
"I just can't believe it! I am 23 years old. Do you honestly think that I cannot defend myself? Plus, what makes me such 'Nazi bait' anyways? I mean, I am completely normal. Just a girl with a boring accounting job who lives alone, I don't have any other close friends or family," you said harshly. "It's not like I am a superhero with powers," you yelled staring at the red-haired woman who couldn't keep that smirk off of her face.
Suddenly the driver of the car turned around.
"Brace yourselves folks. They have cars too. I am trying to lose them." He said.
The car started swerving in different directions, you assumed because it was trying to dodge traffic and get out of the city. You wanted to continue on your rant, but instead, you braced yourself for the madness and grabbed onto a handle in the car.
Widow and Adrian were accustomed to the movement because neither of them was phased. They both just sat back and trusted that we were going to make it out alive.
After a short silence, you decided it would be best to say something rather than keep an awkward tone for the rest of the trip.
"So, what is the plan," you said.
"What exactly do you mean by 'plan'" Adrian said.
"How are we going to get out of here? If and when we do, where will I be staying? You said I was in danger Adrian." you said, trying to hold back all of your emotions. You were sad, angry, and confused. Part of you was telling yourself to not hold back and to unleash everything you had, but you wanted to keep the situation steady.
Widow was now looking at Adrian. She turned to you and took on a very serious look.
"You are going to be staying at the Avengers compound. Here you will be safe from any danger in the outside world. I don't have all of the details yet, but we will get you situated as soon as we arrive. We have some other agents that will be heading to your apartment later to gather any other belongings you may have. Rest assured that this is a long-term situat-" she was interrupted by a sharp turn and a bullet hitting the car.
Widow and Adrian didn't flinch a muscle, you looked at them both shocked. And Widow continued talking.
"As I was saying -" then she was interrupted again by the driver.
"I am sorry ma'am, but we have successfully lost the cars that were following us. I am going invisible on the radar so there is not a single chance of us being traced again. We should be at the compound in a few hours, so please get comfortable." the driver informed.
Widow cleared her throat one last time as she nodded to the driver, thanking him.
"This is a long-term issue, Adrian previously said that we don't know why HYDRA is so interested in you. We have done extensive research and looked at your family's history and we still cannot find any problem. We need your help, and we want to make sure to keep you out of the hands of anyone harmful." She said confidently.
You looked at her, and then at Adrian. Again, you were speechless. You had no idea why you were wanted, let alone by HYDRA themselves. You kept staring at them until you finally looked down, defeated. You didn't feel like talking, and after the afternoon you had, you just wanted to settle down and relax. You didn't need this stress.
A few hours later...
You wake up and set your head up from Adrian's shoulder, he noticed you were finally getting up so he gives you a sweet smile, you flash him a similar smile. Everything is good until you realize where you are again, then you shift away from him and continue thinking about what had happened that day. It was now later, you tried looking out of the back windows but it was hard to determine how dark it was outside with the tint.
"Hey Y/N, I was about to wake you up. We just pulled into the compound." Adrian said calmly.
You rolled your eyes, looking away from him. You looked to Widow, who was using her phone to message someone. She broke contact with her phone and looked up at you and smiled.
"Welcome to the Avengers Compound or your new home."
You were terrified, you tried to hide this fear but it was evident that you were uncomfortable. Adrian and Widow both picked up on this and glanced at each other knowingly. Then, the driver opened your door to escort you to the entrance. You grabbed your laptop bag and followed him. Widow and Adrian followed soon after, they wanted to give you some personal space after seeing your discontent.
Wow, this place is nice for some abandoned storage area.
You were almost to the front when the door suddenly opened, revealing a tall and very buff man.
"Welcome! You must be Y/N. I'm Steve Rogers, but you can call me Steve." he said with a smile on his face.
Widow greeted Steve with a grin and Adrian awkwardly waved.
"It's pretty late out so you'll get a full tour of the area tomorrow. We have some food set out for you after you get settled into your room. Speaking of which, Nat here is going to lead you there. In the meantime, enjoy!" he pleasantly said.
You were almost disgusted by his genuine kindness. He seemed so personable, so much like the character he had to play when it came to battle. Widow pulled you aside from the group as you walked into the building. She walked you straight over to the elevator, it opened and she guided you in, hitting a number on the inside.
It was quiet for a second as the elevator was going down.
"Your suite has a kitchenette, living area, and small dining area as well as a bedroom with an en suite bath. For now, it only has the basic stuff in it, but if you would like to decorate it, you are allowed to," she spoke.
You glanced at her. Today had been a long day, you still hadn't had time to process everything that had happened, and you surely didn't want to think about decorating your new room in a brand new area. So, you just nodded your head and flashed her an awkward grin.
The elevator door opened to a long and artificial lit hallway. Widow led you down until she stopped; she reached into her pocket and grabbed a keycard. She reached the door, swiped it, then she opened it to a very nice room.
"I know you are probably very exhausted from your 'big day'," she smiled sarcastically. "but take a look around, feel free to come to the main lounge and grab something to eat. You can ask Friday for directions if you need, but please get some rest, we have tons to do tomorrow." she said.
"Um, who's Friday?" you asked.
"Oh, sorry. She's the AI program built-in. Just say her name and ask her a question. She's here all the time, and before I forget, here's your keycard to the room. If you ever lose it you can ask Friday to open the door, just an FYI." she answered.
"Okay, thanks," you said.
You looked around and it was just how she described it. You saw the bed and nearly ran to it, you needed to lay down. Widow waved 'bye' and made her way out of the room. You were finally alone. You weren't that hungry and you did not want to be given directions from an AI to try and hunt down food.
You were about to head to bed when all of the sudden, someone knocks on the door. You hesitantly opened the door to Adrian. He looked very tired too.
"Hey Y/N. I just wanted to make sure you made it to your room. Oh, and here. I brought you something to sleep in, I know you probably did not want to sleep in your work clothes." he said as he handed you something to wear.
It was a baggy t-shirt and some sweatpants.
"Thanks." You were about to close the door when he opened it a little more.
"One more thing before I go. I am truly sorry for all of this, but I promise, it's for your safety. And I was just doing my job when I grabbed you in the alley earlier today." he looked at you very apologetic.
"It's okay. Well, goodnight," you said as you closed and locked the door. You reached for a lock but found that there wasn't one.
shit. I guess I will rely on the AI just one time...
"Friday, lock the door?" you called out.
The door suddenly locked. You felt as good as someone who had been dragged to God knows where to seek shelter from a German terrorist organization who was after you.
You changed into the clothes Adrian gave you, walked into the bedroom, and made yourself comfortable on the fresh linen that was your sheets. You asked Friday to turn the lights off and you sat there in a new bedroom, very different from 24 hours ago. You laid down and stared at the ceiling, getting lost in your thoughts before you closed your eyes.
