Mission Accepted
Margaret “Peggy” Carter doesn’t know what to think of the young man sitting in front of her. He’s a rookie, his graduation from Basic was only a month ago. But he’s already proven his mettle multiple times, he’s inexperienced but undeniably talented. Which makes him perfect for this task.
“Ma’am, can you stop staring at me?” His posture shows how difficult it is to censor himself, which could make or break this mission.
She raises her eyebrow slightly, “Do you know why I called you in here today?”
“No . . . ma’am.” He’s trained himself not to fidget under pressure, a necessary skill.
“What is your opinion of Howard Stark.” The boy barely moves, but for a spy it’s practically a flinch.
“Ma’am, I understand he is a co-founder of this agency, but I can’t act like I respect that jackass.”
“You’re going to have to.”
His eyes go wide, absolutely furious, “You can’t seriously expect me to listen to that motherfucker!”
“I expect you to do your job.”
“And where in the fucking job description does it say I have to obey a motherfucking bigot?”
“The part where it says ‘Do whatever is necessary to complete your assigned mission’, are you incapable of doing that Agent?”
The complete confusion on his face almost makes her break her composure. “. . . What does that have to do with Stark?”
“Everything. Stark has betrayed SHIELD, but he has hidden all proof of his crimes, I need you to find it.” She pauses briefly to give him a moment to process, “Unfortunately, he suspects that I’ve discovered his secret, I can’t do anything for fear of revealing myself.”
“Just to be clear . . . you’re giving me the opportunity to take that fucker down?” His expression and body language make it clear, there’s nothing he wants more than to do exactly that.
“Yes.”
His grin is nearly feral, “So what did you catch him doing?”
Instantly the brief feeling of success vanishes. “Child abuse.” She barely gets the words out before his demeanor darkens.
“That motherfucking bastard.”
“Do you accept this mission?”
“Yes.” He says that one word with such dark finality, it’s clear he won’t allow for failure. She knew she chose the right agent.
“Alright then, I know this is your first field mission.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Then it’s my pleasure to truly welcome you to SHIELD. I expect great things from you Agent Fury.”
“Then you’ll be the only one in this place who isn’t shocked when I’m the one sitting in that chair.”
She can’t hold back a smirk, this is exactly the right Agent to save her godson.
