Chapter 4

It has been two weeks since Kate and Lucy talked, and Kate still hadn't got to have the talk with her girlfriend about the whole Marcella situation. The couple talked every day but Kate could never bring herself to say what she wanted to say, she was just happy to talk with her girlfriend and to hear the voice she misses so much every time they hang up, they may talk every day but somehow Kate never fails to miss her the second one of them needs to hang up. She knew she would have to have a real talk about the situation with her eventually but she needed time to think about what she wanted to say, in the meantime she just enjoyed listening to her girlfriend's beautiful voice and the stories she would tell her about how she met so many people she liked on the aircraft carrier. The whole Marcella situation got a little bit better in the last two weeks, the woman was still following Lucy everywhere of course but she didn't barge into Kate and Lucy's conversations every time they chatted, so that is good, right?

Kate took time and thought about what Tennant, Hina and Kai said to her but as much as she tried to, she couldn't master what she wanted to say in words, all she has done in the past couple of weeks is try to come up with what to say to her girlfriend to make her understand what she felt.

Kate Whistler was never really good with words, it was hard for the woman to spill what was on her heart, she showed her care for the people she loved in actions, but for her and Lucy to truly work and communicate without one of them keeping something from the other, Kate had to learn how to speak her mind. She knew this was going to be hard, but for Lucy Tara, Kate Whistler will do anything.

Lucy, on the other hand, was very good at speaking her truth. She just didn't know how to sit and talk with her ex-girlfriend because every time she tried to call her to have a chat, Marcella found an excuse and changed the subject or pretended to need to go somewhere.

Lucy was lost, she had no idea what to do in order to make Marcella understand, so she went to the only person who she knew could help her.

Jane tennant was an amazing boss, she truly cared about her agents and treated them like family, she was always there to listen to anyone who needed to talk. That was part of the reason her agents came to her for advice.

It was ten pm in Honolulu, Hawaii, and four pm in Singapore when she received a call from her junior agent, Lucy tara.

"Lucy, Hi." the special agent in charge greeted.

"Hey, boss," Lucy started, "I know it's late and I'm really sorry if I woke you up-" the brunette got cut off by Jane.

"Lucy, hey, it's ok, you didn't wake me up, I'm always here for you." Tennant calmed the small woman down.

"Are you sure boss? Because it is really late over there-" Lucy didn't get to complete her sentence because once again Jane Tennant cut her off.

"I'm sure Lucy." Tennant informed with a smiling face that Lucy of course couldn't see, "Now, what is on your mind? Is everything ok?" she asked.

Lucy took a big breath and exhaled before speaking again, "Everything is ok, yes, but I need advice, more specifically your advice." she told her superior.

"Let me take a guess, it is about your ex-girlfriend, Marcella?" Tennant asked, already aware of the answer.

"Yeah, it is," Lucy responded, "How did you know?" she asked, confused.

"Kate told me about your situation, don't worry, she didn't say anything private about you two, just that Marcella give you both a hard time," Jane said.

"Kate talked to you? Why didn't she talk to me if this was bothering her so much?" Lucy asked, again confused.

"She didn't want you to worry about her, look, Lucy, your relationship with Kate is none of my business." the special agent said, "but what I can do is try to help you with things like this," Jane said.

"Ok," Lucy took a moment before speaking again, "what do I do with her, boss? She never leaves me unless I have to go to the bathroom or shower. I tried to talk to her so many times but she always finds an excuse to change the subject or walk away. I really need your advice." Lucy said, helpless.

"Look Lucy, you tried nicely talking to her, you gave her a choice and she chose not to listen. I'm not saying that you should yell at her or anything like that, I'm saying make her listen. Make her sit down and hear you talk, make her understand you don't like her being glued to you all the time, she needs to understand that you have a girlfriend and by her not leaving you all day she makes you feel uncomfortable. I know you don't like forcing anything, but in this case, you tried as much as you could not to. She didn't leave you any other choice. Just Make her sit in her place and listen while you are talking. ok?" Tennant replied.

"Yeah ok, I got it." Lucy responded, "Thank you, boss." she said.

"You are welcome, and Lucy, you don't have to call me boss outside of work, you can just call me Jane." the woman informed.

"Feels a little weird calling you by your first name but I'll try." Lucy said, "Thank you again, not just for this but for always listening when we need you, it means a lot." the brunette said.

"No problem, I'm always happy to help, Lucy. Have a good day."

"Thank you, Have a good night," Lucy responded, and with that, they hung up.

The next day Kate was on her way to the NCIS building, the team was out on the field arresting a suspect so when she saw that nobody was at the bullpen she made her way to Ernie's lair.

The blonde swiped her credit at the machine and opened the door, revealing Ernie sitting on his chair, working on something related to their current case.

"Hey." The woman greeted. Ernie, who was very focused on what he was doing, turned his head briefly.

"Hey, you need something?" he asked.

"No, I just saw that nobody was in the bullpen so I came here," she explained.

"Oh, well do you want to sit here? You can grab a chair and help me if you want," he told the FBI agent.

"Sure," she said, she closed the door and grabbed a chair, dragging it and sitting next to the Cyber Intelligence Specialist.

The duo spend a few minutes working before they got a result and called Tennant, after that they just sat in the man's room while Kate was thinking whether she should ask Ernie for help or just drop it.

Ernie noticed her behavior and made the first move, "Is there something on your mind, Kate?" he asked.

Kate took a few seconds thinking what to say before finally speaking, "umm, yes actually, can we talk?" she asked.

"I thought that was what we were doing," Ernie replied.

Kate smiled at that and began, "Do you know Lucy's ex? This Marcella girl?" she asked.

"Yeah, I do," he replied, "Why?" he asked.

"Well, after we met at the airport, I called Lucy a week after and she wasn't in the room at that moment so Marcella replied, she told me how she's glad that Lucy "has someone right now" like she was saying she won't have me for that long," Kate explained the whole thing.

"Did you tell Lucy about your chat with her?" Ernie asked.

"No, I didn't want to sound like a jealous girlfriend or something like that," Kate said.

"I hardly doubt Lucy's going to think you're telling her this because you're jealous or anything like that. I think she would be angry at Marcella for saying that to her girlfriend." Ernie said

"Yeah, maybe, but what if Marcella is going to say I'm just making this up because I'm jealous that they're together on the same ship and that Lucy shouldn't trust what I'm telling her?" Kate started to panic, and Ernie, the good friend that he is, calmed her down.

"Can I ask you something?" he asked.

"Yes, of course."

"Who do you think Lucy would trust? Do you think she would believe her own girlfriend whom she has known for almost 3 years now, or a girl she knew in high school and hasn't seen in years?"

Kate knew this wasn't really a question because Lucy trusted her over anyone else.

"You're right, I guess my fears got the best of me, thank you, Ernie," she said. Kate was grateful she had a friend like Ernie, she was grateful to him for helping her get Lucy back last year, he was the one who helped them get back together, and she made sure he knew it after her grand gesture.

"You're welcome, always," he told her.

Kate got up off the chair and was about to leave when Ernie called her, "Yeah?" she turned back.

"Don't let your fears get the best of you, trust yourself and your relationship and Talk to Lucy, tell her about yours and Marcella's conversation, your relationship is only going to get stronger from this, remember, communication is the key," he told her.

"Thank you, Ernie, again," she said, "have a nice day." and with that, she opened the door and left.

*********

It's been a few hours since Kate talked to Ernie, she thought about what he said and she took a few hours to gather in her thoughts what she wanted to say to her girlfriend before calling her.

Whistler was interrupted from her thoughts by a ring from her phone, it was already late and the only one calling her in these hours lately was her girlfriend, so she didn't have to look and just straight up picked up her phone.

"Lucy, hey!" The blonde answered.

"Hey, sorry for calling you late," Lucy said.

"It's never late for you to call me, Luce." The blonde said.

Lucy smiled at her girlfriend's words, and even though Kate couldn't see her smile she somehow knew Lucy was smiling.

"How did your day go?" Lucy asked.

"Umm, ok, look, Lucy, I need to talk to you about something," Kate informed, and was proud of herself for getting it out.

"Oh, ok, did something happen?" Lucy asked.

Kate recognized that tone and immediately calmed down her lover, "No, no, Lucy, nothing like this. I promise." the blonde said.

"Ok, then, what do you need to talk about?"

Kate took a deep breath and exhaled before starting, "it's about Marcella," she finally said.

"What about her?" the brunette asked.

"A week after you left to be agent afloat, I called you around noon in your time and you weren't in the room so Marcella picked up," Kate paused for a few seconds and Lucy thought she was done so she replied, "Yes, I know, I'm sorry she answered instead, I talked to her about this, she won't touch my phone again," Lucy said.

"No, Lucy, it's not about it, it's about something she said," Kate explained.

"What did she say?" Lucy asked.

"She talked about how she was glad you have someone who loves you now,"

"Wait, let me get this straight, she picked up my phone, and had the nerve to basically say you won't have me for that long?" Lucy said, Kate could hear her angry voice, and despite not liking an angry Lucy, she was glad for listening to Ernie, she really was silly for thinking her girlfriend wouldn't believe her.

Kate didn't talk and let Lucy calm down for a few seconds until the special agent talked herself, "I'm sorry," Lucy said.

"Sorry? Sorry for what Luce?" Kate asked, she was a little confused.

"I'm sorry I didn't set boundaries with her the moment I knew she would be with me on that ship, I'm sorry she said this to you," Lucy said.

"No, Lucy. you have nothing to be sorry for, you didn't know it would be like this, and you didn't know she would say things like that, ok? I'm here for you, and I'm never going away, remember what I told you at the beach? I'm not going anywhere." Kate said.

"Thank you for being the person I know. I don't know what I did to get so lucky with you." Lucy said.

"Well, that's easy, you are being you." Kate answered.

"I love you, Kate."

"I love you too," the blonde said back, "Lucy, do you remember what you told me when I got nervous before the FBI barbecue?" she asked.

"Yeah," Lucy replied.

"The same goes for you," Kate said, "You won't be alone, I'll be right here with you, always." the blonde repeated Lucy's exact words.

Kate heard Lucy laughing, and at that moment, nothing else mattered, hearing Lucy's beautiful laugh was much more than enough for Kate, the woman knew she would never let this amazing girl go.

The couple talked for a few minutes but had to hang up because it was already late for Kate, "Time to sleep, my love." Lucy said to her girlfriend.

"No argument from me this time, goodnight, Luce."

"Goodnight, Kate," Lucy replied, and with that, the couple hung up.

**********

Almost right after Kate and Lucy hung up, Marcella walked into her and Lucy's bunk bed.

"Hey," Marcella said.

"We need to talk," Lucy said.

"Oh, ok, just not right now, I need-" Marcella was about to give another excuse when Lucy cut her off.

"What you need is to sit down and listen to me now."

"Ok, what do you need to talk about?" Marcella asked.

"Oh, I don't know, how about the fact that you told my girlfriend she won't have me for that much longer?" Lucy said.

"What? I never said anything like that, Luce." Marcella said, playing herself dumb.

"Oh really? So Kate just told me that?" Lucy got angry.

"Maybe, I mean, I don't know, maybe she was jealous of us?" Marcella said, making Lucy angrier.

"Jealous of us? There is no us, Marcella. And there is certainly no reason for my girlfriend to be jealous." Lucy said.

"Look Lucy, I know we broke up a long time ago, but There could still be an us, you don't need this Kate girl. You could be with so much better than her-" Marcella was once again cut off by a very angry Lucy.

"Marcella, Stop." Lucy raised her voice, "I tried to do this in a nice way but you don't seem to listen, so be quiet and hear me now. I don't know where you got this crazy idea, but we are not getting back together, I have a girlfriend who I am very much in love with. And I would appreciate it if you would stop being stuck to me all day long every day. You are making both me and Kate uncomfortable. So please, no more coming after me unless the boss says so, and you are not touching any of my stuff or picking up the phone when Kate calls me, because you are making her uncomfortable." she said.

"Do you understand?" Lucy asked,

"Yes, I'm sorry, Lucy. It's just when I heard you are going to be on the same ship as me for the next four months I got excited. I thought that maybe we could get back to what we were before, but that was a long time ago. I'm sorry for making you and Kate uncomfortable. You won't hear from me at all for the next two months." Marcella said.

"Good, thank you. Now if you excuse me, I'm going outside. I need some fresh air." Lucy said, she didn't wait for any response from Marcella and just walked away.
