Chapter 5

Four months.

It's finally been four months since Lucy left to be agent afloat. Four months since Kate and Lucy had to say goodbye. Four months since they last saw each other. Lucy Tara was finally coming home this week, and Kate couldn't be more excited.

"Okay, I just talked to Ernie, everything is set up for the surprise party except the food, how's that going?" Kate asked Kai and Jesse who were responsible for the food.

"It's going ok, Kate. Everything will be ready in time," Kai said.

"Are you sure the cake will be ready in time for the surprise party?" Kate asked.

"Yes, Kate. I promise it will be ready in time. You need to relax, ok?" Jesse said.

"Yeah, Sorry. I just want everything to be perfect for Lucy." the blonde said, taking a breath.

"Lucy is only coming back in two days, and we have enough time for everything." Kai said.

"You're right," Kate said.

If only they knew Lucy was planning to surprise Kate and the team a day earlier…..

Lucy was sitting at the airport. She was both nervous and excited to see Kate again, although they talked every single day while she was away, the situation with Marcella was challenging for them. Luckily after Marcella's and Lucy's talk, the woman never bothered them again. Lucy only saw her when needed.

Lucy's flight was at midnight, and it was only six pm, so she had a long wait until then.

"Hello," Lucy heard a woman's voice next to her.

"Hey." the special agent replied.

"Are you going to visit family?" The elderly woman asked.

"Close, I'm going home, I was away for a while, but I'm finally going back."

"Do you mind if I ask who is waiting for you at home?" the woman asked.

Lucy chuckled, "Not at all, I'm going to see my girlfriend and my family." Lucy replied.

"Oh, how nice, I'm sure you missed them all." the woman said, smiling.

"Attention, all passengers booked on flight 432A to London, Please proceed to gate 2 immediately. The final checks are being completed, and the captain will order for the doors to close in approximately five minutes. I repeat. This is the final boarding call for all passengers booked on flight 432A. Thank you." They heard the speakers.

"Oh, that's me. Well, have a safe trip, dear." The woman said, then walked away for her flight.

Lucy's phone started ringing. She looked at the screen and saw Kate was calling. Her face lit her just from that.

"Kate, hey!" Lucy answered her phone.

"Hi, Luce, I just wanted to hear your gorgeous voice again, I can't believe I'm finally seeing you again in a couple of days," Kate said.

Yes, even though Kate and Lucy talked every day, they couldn't Facetime each other. So this will be the first time in one hundred and twenty-four days they will finally see each other again, yes. They both counted.

"I know. I miss you like crazy," Lucy replied.

"Did you pack already, or are you waiting for tomorrow?" Kate asked.

"I'm actually starting now, don't worry, my love. Nothing is going to stop me from coming home." Lucy said, smiling into the phone.

The brunette could hear Kate's laugh in the background, and that alone made her smile.

Nothing was worth more than hearing her girlfriend's giggling.

"Hey, Kate,"

"Yeah?" the blonde replied.

"I talked to Marcella. She won't bother us anymore," Lucy informed.

"Oh, that's good to hear. I'm sorry I didn't tell you about my conversation with her sooner, I didn't want you to worry," Kate said.

"It's ok, I know. I'm sorry I didn't realize how uncomfortable the whole thing made you feel. " Lucy said.

The couple continued to talk until Kate's tired voice was heard, "Go to sleep, Babe, we will see each other soon." Lucy said.

"You got no argument from me this time, goodnight Luce, I love you." Kate said.

"I love you too." the small woman replied, and the pair hung up.

Lucy finally landed and got into a taxi, and she was finally on the way home.

It didn't take long to get home, and before she knew it, Lucy was already getting inside the building, she got to the apartment door and unlocked it.

The special agent opened the door to her home, and her whole mood changed. She was finally home.

She knew Kate was supposed to be home any minute now, so she went to hide in their bedroom. Lucy didn't wait more than five minutes before she heard keys switching at the door's lock.

The blonde just came back home from work, she put her keys and FBI ID on the table and opened the fridge, she took out a juice from the fridge and drank it without any cup. Kate's drinking was interrupted by a noise coming from her bedroom.

She grabbed a pan from the kitchen and walked towards the bedroom, "Hey, whoever's in there, come out right now." Kate called.

The blonde was filled with surprise when she saw her own girlfriend coming out of their bedroom, "Hi." Lucy said, smiling ear to ear.

"You're home!" Kate said, still holding the pan, but her smile was big. It was hard to miss her happy face.

"Yeah, I couldn't wait any longer, and I- I really want to hug you, but you're still holding the…" she gestured to the pan Kate was holding.

"Oh, right." the blonde said, putting the pan down and enveloping Lucy in a big loving hug.

They broke the hug after a few seconds, and Lucy brought her lips to Kate's, she gave her a cute kiss and was about to back up a little when Kate chased her lips and kissed her harder and longer.

Kate broke the kiss, remembering the long day she just had, "Mm. No, I'm sorry. I'm so gross right now." she said, trying to back down, but Lucy didn't let her, "You're perfect." she said. Lucy wouldn't even care if Kate was covered in mud from head to toe. She would claim everything is hot when it's about her girlfriend.

"Except I'm pretty sure you drank that OJ straight from the bottle," Lucy said after breaking the kiss.

"Oh, well, in my defense, you weren't supposed to be home until tomorrow," Kate said, the smile on her face only getting bigger.

"I moved my travel orders up. it only took three requests, two informal, one formal… Uh, eight emails and one very long phone call." Lucy informed.

"That is a lot of red tape to cut through," Kate said, a smug look on her face.

"Is that turning you on right now?" Lucy asked, smiling.

"Just a little bit," Kate confessed.

Kate and Lucy then talked about if the team would be surprised to see Lucy had arrived earlier.

Kate realized they had a problem.

Lucy just arrived at the NCIS building, she walked to the bullpen, and the team was more than surprised to see her there.

"Luce. You're back." Jesse said, clearly surprised.

"Welcome home," Tennant said.

"Oh, that's a baby." Lucy noticed Nate.

"Yeah. Daniel is off the island for a couple of days." Jane explained.

"And you're watching Nate?" Lucy asked.

"Actually, Alex is." Jane replied.

Right on cue, Alex came out of his mom's office, "Oh, hey, Lucy." he said, and he was about to hug her when the baby called him.

"It's great to see you, Lucy." The young Tennant said, taking his brother to his hands.

"You too," Lucy said.

"All right, guys, let's go find Lieutenant Park." Jane said, and everyone left to get on the road.

"Oh, wait, I have…. Presents." Lucy said in a defeated voice after everyone left the bullpen.

Later that day, Kate and Lucy were home, arranging the table for dinner.

"How was the first day back?" Kate asked.

"It was fine," Lucy replied.

"I heard you kicked a North Korean operative's ass," Kate said, proud of her girlfriend.

"You heard about that?" Lucy asked.

"Yeah, Kai texted me with a GIF of Mighty Mouse beating up a bad guy. It was cute." Kate replied.

"I don't get it," Lucy said.

"Well, I think because you are small but powerful," Kate explained, patting Lucy's hand with her own.

"No, I get the Mighty Mouse thing. But I... I get back, and everybody's weird, and you're getting live text updates of the day." Lucy said, her voice was a bit sad.

"Well, I, you know, I wouldn't read so much into it," Kate said, trying to keep it together. She wanted to surprise Lucy with the party but didn't like to see her upset.

"You should've seen them. They were acting strange." the small agent said, her voice sounding defeated.

"They're probably busy." Kate tried.

"So busy they can't even make plans with me?" Lucy asked.

"Look, I'm sure they are extenuating-" Kate got cut off by Lucy.

"I couldn't wait to come back and see everyone. It's like, you know, I don't, I don't need a big welcome home, but, I guess, just something-" Kate cut Lucy off this time.

"Well, we're throwing you a surprise party." Kate blurred out and immediately put a hand on her mouth.

Lucy was taken aback by that statement.

"It was planned for tomorrow, but then you came home a day early, and we've been trying to pivot and make it work without you finding out." the blonde explained.

"It's still, it's still happening. It's just... well, it has to be tomorrow because that's when we could
get everything together." Kate informed, the blonde was trying her hardest to make Lucy happy.

Lucy's confused face turned into a happy one in seconds, "Oh, my gosh, you guys are the best!" she said, kissing her girlfriend.

"Oh, and you. You used to protect secrets for a living, and you let one slip just because you couldn't stand to see me upset." Lucy said, making her way to sit on Kate's lap.

"Well, I guess I kind of did." the blonde said, smiling at Lucy's change of mood, Lucy then kissed her girlfriend again.

Kate stopped their hot makeout session when she remembered that Lucy wasn't supposed to know about the whole thing, "but promise me you will still act surprised." Kate said.

"They will not suspect a thing." Lucy promised. And the couple proceeded to make out until it was late.

It was the middle of the night when Lucy woke up. The woman couldn't sleep, so she got off the bed to get some fresh air and ended up in the kitchen.

It took Kate a few minutes before she opened her eyes and noticed Lucy wasn't there with her. The empty space was still warm, which she gathered meant that Lucy wasn't awake for that long, so Kate assumed she was just in the balcony. But after a couple of minutes of waiting for her lover to return to bed, Kate heard the sounds coming from the kitchen.

It was Two in the morning.

Worried about Lucy, the blonde was quick to get up and rush to the kitchen after her lover. Maybe Lucy dropped something and needed help, Kate was pretty sure of that when she heard more noises from the same place. Kate wasn't sure why her girlfriend was in the kitchen in the first place, but she knew it was probably a good reason for Lucy to be awake in the middle of the night.

"Lucy? Are you okay?" Kate asked as soon as she reached the kitchen. Lucy turned around, a cup filled with water in her hands that was quickly placed down.

"Hey, I'm ok, What are you doing awake, my love?" Her answer came as a question.

"I asked first." Kate smiled at her girlfriend, "Are you alright? Are you feeling well?" the blonde asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine, Kate. I just woke up and couldn't go back to sleep, so I just came here to get some water."

Kate smiled, taking Lucy's hand in hers as she led the way to the living room, but before she could sit Lucy down, the small woman pulled her into the balcony.

A content sigh left Kate's lips as she was engulfed in a tight embrace, Lucy rested her chin on Kate's shoulder, as both of them stared up at the sky. It was their thing, every few nights, when they'd stay up after a long day, not being able to fall asleep, or doing something more, they'd spend a couple of minutes staring up at the moon. They started this tradition when Kate told Lucy how she and her brother used to do it when they were kids. Since then, every time Kate couldn't sleep, they would stare at the sky, Lucy would imagine Noah and Kate as little kids, and Kate would remember all the times they used to stare at the moon without talking and appreciate everything in life.

Kate's fingertips gently brushed against Lucy's arms, her lips meeting the soft skin of Lucy's shoulders. As much as the sky was beautiful outside, Kate had her favorite sight just in front of her. She just couldn't help herself, she always felt this magnetic pull to stare at her lover as if she was the most precious thing on earth - and well, for Kate, she was.
Lucy shifted in her place, maybe it was a sign that they should head back to their bedroom, but then, she got even more comfortable against her girlfriend's torso. Kate could only smile as she
kept on staring at her girlfriend.

"The sky is beautiful, isn't it?" Lucy said.

"Yes, yes they are." Kate replied.

It was finally the day of Lucy's surprise party, and the woman was on her way to the location.

"Remember, you have to act surprised," Lucy said to herself.

"Surprise!!!" Everyone yelled when The brunette got there.

"Oh, my gosh! This is so amazing, y'all! I'm so surprised!" Lucy tried her hardest to act surprised.

Everyone knew Lucy was faking it immediately after her fake reaction. But in Lucy's defense, she was never a good actress.

"Whistler," Jesse called Kate out.

"I thought discretion was your thing," Kai said.

"It... It just came out, ok," Kate said.

"No, it's not, it's not her fault, She just loves me so much." Lucy came to her girlfriend's defense,

"But seriously, you guys, thank you. Thanks." Lucy's happiness made everyone forget that last few seconds. They all just focused on her finally coming home.

"Well, hey, I'm sorry that we couldn't surprise you on the day you arrived, but...you have to know that there isn't a day that has gone by that we haven't thought about you," Jane said, and it made Lucy's heart flutter.

"To Lucy," Tennant said.

"To Lucy!" Everyone raised their cup and cheered.

Lucy then got all the gifts she bought for the team from her bag, and started to give each of them their present.

Everyone Lucy loved was at the party: Kate, Jane, Jesse, Ernie, Kai, and of course, Carla Chase, even the tiny Tennant were there!

"Welcome home, Lucy," Alex said.

"It's good to have you back. We missed you, Aunt Lucy," Julie said.

"Thank you, Alex and Julie. It's good to be back." Lucy said, hugging the two kids.

The last two gifts were for Commander Chase and Ernie, she gave Carla a little bag with a
special something she knew she liked, "Thank you, Lucy, welcome back." Chace said.

The team celebrated a little more, Kate and Lucy obviously shared a beautiful and cute kiss. And, of course, everyone cheered.

It was now Ernie's turn. Unfortunately, she accidentally gave his gift to Alan, so she improvised.

"I'm sorry. I panicked, and I gave your gift to Alan." Lucy said, giving Ernie a stapler.

"I love it." Ernie said.

"It's a boring stapler." Lucy was a little confused.

"It means you're home, Luce." Ernie said, and of course, the man didn't care for a stupid gift as long as it was from Lucy. He was just glad his family was complete again at home.

Ernie's reaction just made Lucy laugh louder. It was a cute moment between the two.

"Picture!" Lucy yelled.

"Oh yeah," Kate said, not leaving her girlfriend for even one second. Lucy found it adorable.

"All right, who's taking it?" Jesse asked.

A waitress from the bar came to aide and raised her hand, signaling she'll help, "Ok," Jesse said.

"Thank you," Tennant said to the waitress.

"Alan!" Lucy yelled, "Come here!" she told the man.

"Yes! Come on!" Jesse called him as well.

"All right, guys, everyone says, "Welcome home on three," Jane said.

"One, two, three. Welcome home!" Everyone yelled.

And just like that, Lucy felt entirely at home again.
