Mobius; love, mischief, Loki and trust

Mobius hadn’t read or heard a lot about soulmates. He knew that there was supposed to be one person in the universe that was his match, his love. And that person walked around with the most important words that Mobius would ever say to them. He himself hat the sentence yes, I trust you on his back. Something he found ironic because an untrustworthy person would stab you in the back.

He didn’t know what other people in the TVA had written on their body. Soulmates were a subject that just wasn’t talked about. Their soulmates would be out there somewhere in the universe, and they would protect the sacred timeline. No one ever sought out their soulmate because if they did it most certainly would go against the sacred timeline.

The TVA didn’t care about soulmates their only job and focus should be maintaining order and making sure there is only one timeline. But Mobius sometimes wondered about his soulmate. In the dead of night or when he got some rest. It was hard to tell when it was night or day. He wondered what they would be like and why the most important thing that his soulmate would say to him would be that they trust him. Why would Mobius even ask his soulmate if they trust him? Wasn’t that supposed to be obvious? They were his soulmate, of course they should trust him.

And at the TVA you just trust each other, it was not necessary to ask someone if they trust you because they just did. So the chances that Mobius would ever meet his soulmate were slim to none. And even his soulmate was at the TVA, he would never know.  But he didn’t mind. Or at least that was what he told himself.

But it didn’t matter now. First he had to get to Loki because like it or not Loki was right about the TVA and Mobius whole world had turned upside down. The one time he wanted Loki to be wrong and be lying to him is the time that they are correct.

Oh, Loki. The one person that worked for the TVA that had to be asked if they can be trusted. Because why would you trust the god of mischief? Someone that had betrayed everyone he knew at least once. Mischief wasn’t a bad thing per se, but mischief had two definitions. Playful misbehaviour, especially on the part of children and harm or trouble caused by someone or something. And Loki embodied both of those definitions. He would ruin your salad just because he needed a metaphor but would then smile so brightly that you would forget why you even cared about that salad. But he could and had caused so much harm. he and his army destroyed New York but he had also harmed Mobius. Not physically, even though the god was capable of such things, but it had hurt that Loki had left him behind in Alabama.  Mischief can be so many things and so can Loki. Mischief can be fun and bring happiness it can also be sad and bring regret. And so can Loki.

When he stepped trough the portal Loki looked slightly confused, as if they didn’t believe that Mobius would come back to them or get them out of that time loop. Loki just stared at him as if he’s waiting for something to happen. ‘‘What are you doing?’’ Maybe a stupid question but it was the first thing that came to mind. It also wasn’t the greatest question to ask because Loki only looked annoyed. ‘‘Passing the time.’’ Okay, maybe he deserved such an answer. Mobius did put him in that time loop, so he knew what Loki was doing. But he wasn’t there to make small talk. They needed to get out of there as fast as they could.

‘‘Do you care about her?’’ Her. The other variant. The one that Loki went after instead of staying with him. And now is the moment of truth. ‘‘Sylvie. I’m not sure care is the right word. We’ve covered this back in there.’’ Why couldn’t he just give a straight answer. He just needed to say yes or no. And they were running out of time and all this talking wasn’t helping them get any further. And Mobius didn’t know how long he could keep going without having a complete mental breakdown.

‘‘Shut up!’’

This wasn’t good, he needed to get out of here before it is to late and Loki wasn’t helping. So perhaps asking them another question would get them any further. ‘‘Do you really think you deserve to be alone?’’ It was not an easy question but one that needed to be asked because if Loki wanted to be alone Mobius couldn’t help him, but then Loki also won’t help him. And he needed the god on and by his side. And, to this question Loki also didn’t have an answer. ‘‘Loki!’’

When calling his name Mobius hoped to get across all that he is feeling right now: anxiety, fear, and desperation. But it probably didn’t. ‘‘You told me to shut up.’’ Okay, so Loki didn’t want to answer or didn’t know what to answer. ‘‘Do you believe you deserve to be alone?’’ ‘‘I don’t know.’’ The truth, Loki didn’t know if he believed that he deserved to be alone. And wasn’t that a heart-breaking thing to hear. ‘‘You better figure it out quick, because the nexus event the two of you caused, whatever the connection is, can bring this whole place down. So we better understand…’’ Loki didn’t let him finish. ‘‘We?’’

Yes, of course ‘we’. Why wouldn’t they do this together? Did Loki really not trust him? A question for later. ‘‘Do you swear that she didn’t implant those memories in Hunter C-20?’’ It all come down to this. Either his whole existence has been a lie, or it was another lie from Loki. Mobius didn’t know which scenario he preferred. ‘‘Mobius, no. I believe her.’’ Oh, this was bad. This is very, very bad.

‘‘So, I just have to trust the word of two Lokis?’’ trust. It all comes down to trust. He expected a cryptic response and then he would sign a let out a little laugh and they would go on with their conversation. But Loki had something else in mind. ‘‘How about the word of a friend?’’ A friend. Loki admitted they were friends. It was nice to hear. And it was nice to finally have a word to describe their relationship. ‘‘You were right, about the TVA. You were right from the beginning. And if you want to save her, you need to trust me. Can we do that?’’ It felt nice to admit that Loki was right about the TVA and to say it out loud made it real. It made it real that Mobius finally knew that the TVA was lying to him and to everyone else. It made it real that maybe Mobius could get his old life back or make a brand new one.

But now they were back to the age-old topic of trust. Loki just didn’t do trust, he trusted himself and chaos. But maybe he trusted a friend. Mobius just needed a yes or no. A simple answer to a complicated question. What he didn’t expect to hear were the words written on his back.

‘‘Yes, I trust you.’’
