Distractions
After getting back, I don’t feel like doing anything. But Adrian doesn’t force me to.
The next morning, Adrian actually wakes up before me. “Good morning. Are you hungry? I don’t actually have anything but we could go get something.” “Why… never mind. You’re up early.” She picks up her phone and shows it to me. “How is it 8am?” She shrugs. “I let you sleep.” I nod slowly. “Right.” She smiles brightly. “Anyway. It’s time to get up. We have plans today.” “Do we?” She continues smiling. “Ok, what is wrong with you? Why are you smiling like that? And what plans?” She sighs. “Come on Y/N. It’s going to be fun.” “Fine. Fine, I’ll go get ready.”
Once we get in the car, I ask, “Where are going?” She shrugs, still smiling. “You’ll see.” I give up on asking, and around ten minutes later, we pull up to a parking lot. I look around, trying to figure out why she brought me here. “So. Are you ready?” She gets out, I do the same soon after.
We walk over to a set of stairs. At the top, it makes more sense. There are booths being set up on one side of the path and a stage with a band getting set up on the other side. I raise my eyebrows. “Live music?” She smiles self-consciously. “Yeah, I though it sounded fun. If not interesting.” She looks at me for approval. Not wanting to make her feel bad, and honestly it does sound kind of cool, I say, “No, yeah. It does sound fun.” Her confident smile returns, and I smile back.
Adrian and I go find a spot to sit as the main singer introduces the band.
“So where’d you hear about this?” She shrugs nonchalantly. “Oh, you know. I know all the cool things going on around here.” She looks at me so seriously, I can’t help but laugh. She tries to keep a straight face but eventually she laughs too. “The book store I work at puts up posters for these types of things all the time. You should come sometime.”
We listen to the music for a while, when out of no where, I feel the pressure return, pressing on my eyes, forcing me to close them. Adrian touches my arm. “You ok?” I nod, pressing a hand to my eyes. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just a headache.” She stands up. “I’ll go get you some water, ok?” I wait for her, hoping the feeling will pass. We were having such a good time too. Adrian kneels down next to me, placing a hand on my back, and hands me the water. “Adrian, I am so sorry, but I think I need to go.” She nods, helping me up.
By the time we get to the car, it feels like my head is exploding. “Ok, Y/N, what’s happening?” My words come out as a whisper. “I don’t know. I think it has something to do with my powers.” “So what do I do?” I breathe heavily, feeling my temperature rising. “I need you to take me to the Avengers.” I attempt to use my powers to relive the pressure in small amounts, but nothing happens. Reaching up and feeling behind my ear, I feel a small circular device, the one Fury’s using to control my powers. I sigh, on the verge of passing out. This can’t be happening again, it was going so well. I guess not on the verge anymore because, I do pass out.
Adrian’s POV
Ok, actually what is happening? I look over to see Y/N slumped over in the seat. I reach a hand out, and shake her a bit. I retract my hand soon after though. Why is she so hot? Not like that, but physically warm. She groans a little which, I think is a good sign, seeing as she’s still alive. I continue driving, looking over from time to time.
We finally reach the tower, and I get out quickly going over to her side. Luckily, she’s a bit more responsive this time, even opening her eyes. “Alright, come on.” I put her arm over my shoulder, and practically carry her. Once inside, people give me very weird looks but no one comes to help. Great. Just then, someone comes around the corner. Her eyes widen, and she comes over. “Is that Y/N?” I exhale “Yeah, I don’t know. She just told me to bring her here.” She nods, taking Y/N’s other arm.
We go into the elevator, standing awkwardly. I finally recognize the woman currently helping me, from Y/N’s description. “You must be Wanda.” She smiles. “Yeah, which must make you… Adrian?” “It must. And I am, it’s nice to meet you. Even under these circumstances.” It gets awkward again, but it doesn’t last because, finally the elevator door opens again. “Come on.” We take Y/N into a medical type room, and put her on a bed. “So what do we do?” She doesn’t respond, and turns to a doctor in the room. “Where is Bruce?” The doctor shrugs, not even looking at Wanda. “Well go find him.” Her tone gets even more serious, which seems like enough to get the doctor to go look for whoever Bruce is.
A little while later, the doctor walks back in with another man who I assume is the Bruce guy Wanda was looking for. “Is it happening again?” Wanda nods, and Bruce shakes his head, then looks over to me. “Who are you?” “Oh, I’m Adrian.” He waits for me to say anything else, but quickly realizes I’m not. “O-oh. Nice to meet you.” I nod. “You too. I don’t know if this is any help but it seems pretty connected to her powers. She’s really hot.” Again, not like that.
They both think about it for a little and Wanda says, “Yeah, I think you’re right. She stopped using her powers before the first time. I mean, I thought she was just controlling it but now I’m not so sure. And this time, she unable to because of the thing Fury put into her neck.”
I nod, pretending I understand any part of that.
