Car Ride on Lamentis
“So… you and Loki..” Mobius decided to try and start a conversation with the blonde who had jumped into his car. The awkward silence as they drove towards the man-eating space cloud was almost unbearable for the social analyst.
Besides, he had to see if his little theory was correct. And what’s a better way than in a void at the end of time, driving towards oncoming death.
“What about me and Loki?” Sylvie raised a brow, leaning into the seat in front of her. Her hands grasped the poles of the headrest as she pulled her head into the passenger’s seat to look at him. “I’ve already told you, it doesn’t matter. For all I know, he’s gone. I pruned myself in hopes of finding him, and it looks like just another false dream of mine.”
“Ouch.” Mobius looked over at her with a small, gentle smile. “I don’t really believe he’s gone. This is Loki we’re talking about. If anyone is to survive a giant cloud creature, it’s him. You have to put some faith in the guy.”
Sylvie blinked and thought for a second. Mobius was right, of course. He had to be right. It took her a moment to fully grasp how she was feeling. Was she just blinded by rage? Was she trying to cover for what she wished wasn’t true? Or was she… caring for Loki?
Mobius seemed to have caught Sylvie’s drift and cleared his throat. “As I was saying… you and Loki, and your Nexus event on Lamentis. Do you have an idea what that could be?” He was quite curious as to what could be going on in the blonde’s brain . Loki was easy to read, but Sylvie… She was a lot more guarded.
Her head shook as she was pulled out of her thoughts. “I didn’t really think about it. One moment I was sitting with Loki, accepting death. The next, I was being arrested by the TVA and Loki was taken away from me. Then I was brought to the Time Keepers, found out they were fake, and had Loki taken away from me again. Never really had time to think about the small details of the Nexus event.”
Her tone wasn’t harsh, yet it wasn’t very gentle either. Her voice quivered a bit when she spoke of losing Loki again. That was something Mobius had picked up on, and honestly, it made him laugh a bit. His chuckle alerted Sylvie, and she glared at him.
“What’s so funny? Why are you laughing?” She spat at him, leaning back in the seat and slumping against the cushioning of the car.
“Oh, nothing. Just that you pretty much confirmed my little theory of your Nexus event with our mischievous, black-haired friend.” Mobius made eye contact with her through the rear-view mirror and smiled once more.
“What… theory?” She asked, keeping eye contact with him. Sylvie had no idea what Mobius was going on about.
The man shook his head and laughed again. “Wow. Both of you, you’re just so clueless, huh?” He sighed through his laughter, drumming his fingers on the steering wheel of the car. “My theory about your Nexus event is that you two felt something for one another. Two people of the same being, falling for each other. Pure chaos. It can break reality. It’s not supposed to happen. And yet…”
Mobius turned his head to catch a quick glimpse at Sylvie with a smile. She looked somewhat shocked, her guard let down completely at this point. Oh, she was vulnerable alright. But for reasons she couldn’t think of. This theory obviously couldn’t be true… could it?
With no protests from the goddess, Mobius continued. “Back on Lamentis, I saw the two of you holding hands. Yeah, don’t think I missed you breaking apart and abruptly stepping aside as we ruined your moment.”
Sylvie looked out of the window to hide the flush growing on her cheeks, but he noticed of course.
“Then when we took you in. The way the two of you stared at each other as you were torn apart and thrown in different rooms. You resisted right away, but funny enough, Loki only resisted once he saw you were being separated from him.” At the time, Mobius had thought it was insane.
But now, as Loki’s friend, and hopefully as Sylvie’s, he saw that it wasn’t so insane after all. It seemed they both cared for the other quite a lot. Odd for a Loki to care about someone other than themselves. Although… well technically this might fit into that category.
He awaited her response, and as she realized he was waiting for her to speak, she looked back over at him. Hesitantly, she moved and slid herself into the passenger’s seat. “So what does that mean?” Her voice was quiet, barely above a whisper as she made eye contact with him again.
God, both of them were idiots. Sylvie had the same look in her eyes that Loki did when he had last interrogated him. That right there truly confirmed it for him.
“He likes you.” He overemphasized the three words, drawing them out a bit so that maybe she would understand. “Do you like him?”
She opened her mouth to argue or say some sly remark, but nothing came out. Her eyes widened a bit as she blinked at Mobius, tilting her head. Was that what these feelings were?
"Do you have any good memories?"
"Just one, really."
Any good memory she had contained him. The train ride, watching the meteors fall on Lamentis while holding each other’s hands, the look they shared as she was dragged away into her cell, his hands on her shoulders as he tried to comfort her in the Time Keeper’s room.
She pruned herself with no hesitations to find him. To get him back.
Sylvie took a deep, shaky breath and looked at Mobius. “My gods… We have to find Loki.”
Mobius grinned, nodding his head. He looked into her eyes again, which were now glimmering with hope. He looked back out the windshield and laughed.
“I don’t think we’ll have to look very hard. Your boyfriend seems to be doing just fine.” He points with his index fingers towards a man standing off on a hill, looking down at the cloud monster.
Sylvie glared at Mobius when he used the term “boyfriend,” but she didn’t have time to say anything before her eyes lit up. Loki. She quickly exited the car before Mobius could even bring it to a stop.
Loki was here.
He was alive.
Thank the Gods.
