God was he nervous, he had never known a girl quite like her, and he hated to lie to her about who he really was. He found her in the mess tent grimacing as she tried to down the black coffee the army served them.
“Agent Carter,” she looked up at his voice, eyes lighting up at the sight of him.
“Captain,” she greeted, ever the professional. God, he loved her.
“I need to speak to you privately,” leading her away to a secluded hall on base. His heart was hammering, so loud Steve was certain that Peggy could hear it.
“Well Captain, you’ve gotten me alone, what do you need?” Peggy asked, she probably thought he needed her help with some scheme that could end the war but that their superiors would never allow.
“I have something I need to tell you.” Steve said summoning his courage, it was now or never. Peggy looked serious now, gone was the glint of mischief in her eyes, she was totally professional.
“What is it?” She asked when words seemed to fail Steve, her prompting didn’t make it any easier.
“You see... the thing is... I’m Captain America.” The final words came out in a rush, and once they did it was like the floodgates opened, so much so that Steve barely registered Peggy speaking.
“I know.”
“I’ve wanted to tell you a long time but- wait. You know?” Immediately the floodgates closed and Steve shut up.
“Steve, I run this division, did you really think I didn’t read the files, that I wouldn’t know who Captain America was?” Peggy asked him, arching an eyebrow.
“But- you never let on...”
“Was I supposed to?”
Steve stuttered dumbly trying to wrap his mind around the fact that Peggy already knew his secret.
“Is that all you wanted to talk about?” Peggy asked after a moment of silence.
“I- yes, I mean... I love you.” The words came out jumbled but Steve was never the less sincere.
“I know Darling, I know.”
