After The War

Steggy and the musical Bandstand! I'm not sure if you're familiar with it, but when I saw it I couldn't help but think of Steve and Peggy as the two leads. - Anonymous

It was the same old story, another day another appointment in search of another job. Steve sighed, fidgeting with his tie. He’d only been home a few weeks, yet the entire town had given him the same speech.

‘Sorry soldier, no work here for you.’

Yet he had to try if Steve couldn’t do what he loved than what was the point of coming home, what was even the point of living? The secretary interrupted his thoughts by bringing him some forms to fill out.

“Fill these out, Honey… on both sides on this one, signature here… and here and then back to me.” The blonde said, her eyes raking over Steve in his best suit. Nothing new really, most women this day were in search of former military men.

“Yes Ma’am,” Steve said focusing on the papers. His mind straying to his dinner plans as he filled out the forms. Tonight, he’d be joining a Ms. Peggy Carter for dinner, he’d met her brother Michael in England. He’d been a good guy, talked about his parents and sister a lot, the Germans had taken poor bastard.

Peggy’s letter inviting him to dinner had arrived a few days ago. She had moved to New York during the war and had tracked him down using Michael’s letters and the phone book. She said that she needed to know what had happened to her brother, and perhaps he would like a home-cooked meal for his trouble. Steve happily had accepted, but first this interview.

For her part, Margaret Carter was trying to prepare for dinner with Michael’s friend from the war. She just had to know what had happened, no matter how horrible that could be. At six o’clock sharp, there was a knock on her flat’s door.

Fastening her second pearl earring into place, Peggy opened the door the most handsome man she’d ever seen, He was a tall well-built man with a dozen red roses in his hands.

“Peggy Carter?” He inquired his charming blue eyes sparkling at her from underneath thick eyelashes. It took all of Peggy’s power not to just openly gawk at him, but to plaster a smile on her face and say:

“Yes, that’s me. You must be Steve Rogers, Michael talked a lot about you… please come on in.”
