The barbecue was packed, Tony had taken up position at the grill, doling out hamburgers and hot dogs to hungry Avengers and their significant others, while Pepper, Natasha and Peggy ducked inside.
“Is everything ready?” Peggy asked, As Pepper made a beeline for the stainless steel refrigerator.
“Yep, I picked up the cake this morning,” Nat said as Pepper proudly displayed Steve’s birthday cake for inspection, the sheet cake was beautiful, covered in smooth white frosting and with the words, ‘Happy 31st/98th Birthday, Steve!’ written in red and blue frosting.
“It’s perfect, thank you two so much.” Peggy said as Pepper got to work, placing the sparkler candles they had purchased on the cake.
“It’s no problem Peggy, we love you and Steve, we’re happy to do this for him,” the red haired CEO said. “By the way, there are sound canceling headphones ready for fireworks time, so that you and Steve can watch them with the rest of us.”
“Thank you, Pepper.” Peggy said as the candles were lit and the trio filed back out onto the patio. Peggy clearing her throat to attract everyone’s attention.
“For he’s a jolly good fellow, for he’s a jolly good fellow! For he’s a jolly good fellow, which nobody can deny!” She began to sing as they made their way towards Steve with the cake. The surprise and happiness in his eyes, warming Peggy’s heart.
“Make a wish, my darling.” Peggy said as Pepper sat the cake down in front of Steve, whom was smiling like a fool.
“What could I possibly wish for?” Steve asked looking around at his assembled friends. A strong arm pulled Peggy to his side and he turned his gaze to her, “I have everything I could possibly wish for right here.”
“C’mon Punk, make a wish so we can eat some cake!” Bucky said rolling his eyes, good-naturedly, Steve laughed and blew out his candles, kissing Peggy immediately afterwards.
Later, once their lips were sweet with frosting, and their stomachs full of some of the best cake Peggy ever had. Steve and Peggy put on their headphones and laid out on a blanket together as they watched the sky light up in a display of reds and blues. Peggy turned to Steve and smiled before kissing him again.
Happy Birthday, my darling.
