“Daniel hates me!”

“Daniel does not hate you,” Peggy said, “Daniel just doesn’t know how to feel about you.”

“Well then Steven hates me, he’s the one filling Daniel’s head.”

“Steven hates everyone, ever since his father died, Steven has had a chip on his shoulder.” Gently she kissed Steve’s cheek, “Darling, they're my grandchildren, and I promised Steven and Rose that I would babysit. It’ll be fun, I promise.”

So two hours later Steve found himself sitting at a picnic table opposite of Daniel, at Hershey park while Peggy took Margery to get her face painted.

“So, are you having fun today?” Steve asked trying to cut the awkward tension, Daniel looked at Steve blankly. But Steve would be damned if the let the stony silence keep him down.

“You know this place is pretty cool, but I know an even cooler place, back in New York, there’s this theme park called Coney Island, me and my best friend used to go there when I was a kid, there’s this awesome roller coaster that was built way back in 1927, I went on it once… it was pretty cool.”

Again Daniel stared at Steve blankly, thankfully Peggy and Margery returned with Margery’s face painted like a butterfly.

“Steve, Steve! Look at my face isn’t it pretty?”

“I think you’re the prettiest butterfly I’ve ever seen,” Steve said with a smile, “why didn’t Grandma get her face painted?”

“She says she’s too old, but it’s really cool! They even have tattoos, look!” Margery held out her hands to show that she had matching temporary tattoos of Steve’s shield on the backs of her hands.

“That’s really cool!” Steve smiled, “c’mon why don’t we all get some ice cream?”

“Yay!” Margery grabbed Peggy’s hand and dragged her ahead, leaving Daniel and Steve alone again. After walking for a few minutes in silence, Daniel spoke up.

“Hey, Steve… do you, think that we could go to Coney Island someday? The Cyclone sounds pretty cool.” Steve turned and looked at the boy who looked up at him with such hope in his eyes.

“Sure kid, I’ll talk to your grandmother, maybe we could go on a trip there someday.”
