Past

“(y/n)?” Yelena says at the same time. Natasha looks between the two of you and the other Avengers are curiously looking too. “What.. you two know each other?” Natasha says confused. It stays quiet for a little, until Yelena says “yeah, kind of”. “Kind of?” Steve nudged. You share a look with Yelena. “We were in the Red Room together.” You say as you walk away from all the people and settle against a wall in front of a big window, at the other end of the kitchen. Watching outside as you gather your thoughts.

“Well dinner is ready” Wanda announced softly. Natasha’s looking at her sister, still confused. While Yelena walks over to Wanda and asks for two plates. With the food she walks over to you, “hey can we talk?” and offers you one of the plates. You hesitantly take it, while Yelena sits next to you. “So..” Yelena starts “about the Red Room, I just want you to know that… I never wanted to kill you or hurt you for that matter.” You finally let your eyes met hers, to see if there was any sign of a lie in them. But you couldn’t find one, so you spoke. “Me neither, I just knew hurting you was the only way we could both stay alive.” Your eyes quickly dart over to the small scar above Yelena’s right eyebrow. “Thank you for taking down the Red Room, Natasha told me the story on the way here.” Yelena gave a small smile, while standing up. “You think you want to join the rest for dinner now?” You nod. “Good because I think everyone, especially Natasha, is very eager to know what is going on. If you don’t mind sharing our story of course.” Yelena offers you her hand to get up.

You join the others at the table and Yelena starts “okay so like (y/n) said, we met at the Red Room. About two years ago I’d say.”. “Wait, that’s when you went rogue according to the agency” Natasha says looking at you. “Yeah, I never went rogue. I was kidnapped by some older Widows, because Dreykov wanted me in his mind control project.” You look down at your food as Yelena continues. “We were in the same training program, with like 18 other Widows. But never put on the same missions. Dreykov called us his best assassins. Until one day..” Yelena trails of looking at you for permission to tell the rest. “Until one day he decided that having two of the best was not good enough, he wanted only one to be the best.” She continues as you nod, giving her permission. “He made us fight. Fight each other on a bimonthly basis, to see who would be the best. But we were BOTH the best assassin, so no one won. The first couple of times he didn’t seem to mind, but then..”. It was silent again, until you spoke up. “But then he made new rules. We had to fight for an hour, trying to kill the other. If we failed, we were put in solitary confinement for two days. Then both go on our separate missions and do it all again.”. The whole room was quiet, everyone knew how bad Dreykov was, but this was a lot to take in. “We never wanted to hurt each other, but we both knew it was the only way we’d both get out alive. We only just now found out that that is what we were both thinking.” Yelena finished.

After a long silence Natasha is the first one to speak. “So then your last fight was like only a couple of weeks before Yelena and I met again?” She looks between the two of you. “Yeah it was” Yelena confirmed as she looked down at the large, light pink scar on your arm. You followed her gaze and realized what she was looking at. “I’m going to finish this in my room.” You say as you walk away. Later that evening you go back to the kitchen to put your stuff away, but mostly to sit by the window again. You find a couch facing the window and start looking up at the stars. You’ve been sitting there for what feels like an hour when you hear Yelena ask “couldn’t sleep?”. You keep looking outside as you answer. “No not really. I didn’t feel like being alone anymore, so I came here to look at the stars, since it’s the middle of the night and everyone’s asleep.” For a moment Yelena looks out at the stars with you, “can I join you? We don’t have to talk, but I don’t feel like being alone either.” You nod and the two of you stare outside.
