Steve

If there was one thing that Steve understood, it was fighting. He'd been fighting his whole life. He'd gotten good at it too. But he'd never fought a battle where he stood to lose everything.

Hydra threw everything they had at him.

He'd been shot, stabbed, and hit more times than he could count.

"We have a problem! Hydra's trying to break into the panic room!" Tony called over the coms.

Steve swore. "I'm heading that way."

Hydra had hit hard, but Steve would hit harder. He wasn't about to let them get close to his family.

"Cap, wait! Clint and I are almost there," Nat said through the coms.

"Not enough time!" Steve pushed forward. He found a large force of Hydra agents trying to use a bomb to break into the panic room.

Not on his watch.

Steve grabbed the bomb off the wall and chucked it as far as he could. He ducked under the shield as a large boom reverberated throughout the Tower.

"Stop blowing holes in my tower!" Tony yelled through the coms.

Some of the Hydra agents turned their guns on Steve, while the rest continued trying to break into the panic room.

Steve roared as he charged them. He used his guns, his fists, and his shield, fighting like a man possessed. He'd never fought so hard in his life. He barely felt what Hydra did to him, barely flinched as bullets tore through him.

One of the agents attempted to put another bomb on the wall.

Dodging bullets, Steve grabbed it.

This bomb was bigger than the first.

"I need some assistance." He panted. He was starting to feel the beatings his body had taken.

"Cap, what up?" Tony asked.

"Bombs about to go off. Gotta get it out of here--"

A bullet lodged in his shoulder.

Steve had meant to drop the bomb out of the hole that the first bomb had made.

But another bullet tore through his stomach.

He stumbled losing his footing.

If the building had been stable, if the first bomb hadn't left a gaping hole, if Steve hadn't jumped into a fight all alone...

Steve fell. His fingers still grasping the bomb.

"Cap! Where are you?" He barely heard the panicked voices of the Avengers.

Steve had fallen before. He had thought that he lost everything. He hadn't wanted to fight anymore. But this time, Steve had everything to live for. He didn't want to die.

Bucky and Winnie needed him.

He had to keep fighting.

"Help!" His voice was barely a whisper, but he prayed that it would be enough.
