Bucky

Bucky hated feeling helpless. He should be out there fighting with Steve, protecting him. He could barely hear muffled shouting, explosions, and briefly what he thought was Steve's voice.

Just the idea of Steve's voice brought him some comfort.

He'd been terrified of Steve finding him for so long, but now, he was just terrified of losing him again.

Steve had never had any sense of self-preservation. He'd take on any fight never considering the risk to himself.

Bucky had been watching his back since they were kids. The second he'd left Steve on his own that idiot crashed a plane.

The Avengers would protect him. They cared about their Alpha, but they didn't know Steve Rogers from Brooklyn. They just knew Captain America.

Steve was his. Steve would always be his.

The only thing that mattered more than keeping his mate safe was Winnie.

Time seems to freeze in the dark prolonging fear.

If it weren't for Winnie's familiar heartbeat, his mind would have convinced itself that he was back in his Hydra cell. He didn't like the dark.

It brought back too many painful memories.

He tried to distract himself by whispering stories to Winnie about a little blond boy who burned too brightly, about a family who loved tighter and harder than anyone else's, about a monstrous boy who'd never deserved any of it.

The sound of the panic room doors being disabled sprung him into action.

He hid Winnie behind the cot and gripped his knives masterfully.

"Easy! Barnes, it's me!" Tony assured stepping in.

"Where's Steve?"

"Well, we've got a bit of a situation--"

"What happened?" Bucky growled. Once he determined that it was safe enough to pick up Winnie, he did so.

"Steve's hurt. He didn't wait for backup."

"Take me to him." Bucky patted Winnie's back. Once he knew that Steve was going to be okay, he was going to kick that idiot's ass.
