Bucky

He liked his new home.

It was small and old but not as old as him. It had a small kitchen that opened into a dining room.

He'd found a table and a few mismatched chairs at a flea market. He also found a lumpy couch and a few broken bookshelves for the living room. He liked working with wood and fixed them easily. He didn't have a lot of books, but Edwin had given him The Hobbit and the rest of The Lord of the Rings series as a house-warming gift. He'd splurged on a memory-form mattress and a thick comforter. His favorite thing about the future so far was blankets.

The last room was technically a closet, but he'd bought a dresser that worked just fine.

He liked that it was so close to his den. He wanted badly to get it ready, but he wanted to keep his secret a little longer.

He was also figuring out what he'd missed. He liked reading history books and science books during work.

It was funny how much had changed.

Some things were much easier than he remembered like light and warmth. Some things were softer like clothes and blankets. Some things were more comfortable like mattresses and shoes.

Alphas were different too not that he’d gotten close to anyone, but he was always observing. They were kinder than he remembered more like Steve…

But Steve had not been a normal alpha in their day.

Betas hadn’t changed as much, but they weren’t looked down as much as he remembered. In his day, Betas were the majority, but it had always been frowned upon when they mated with Alphas or had pups. Now, Betas were usually with Alphas and even Omegas.

Omegas had changed the most. They had been rare in his day, and it was almost always better to keep quiet. They weren’t hiding like they used to.

He wasn't sure why he was still hiding, but he didn't feel safe yet. He knew that Hydra and Steve were still looking for him. He knew that he still had a secret to keep safe.

His memories were getting louder.

He'd wake up screaming because of his memories of Hydra or crying over his memories of Steve. He couldn't fall asleep after his nightmares, so he'd write down his memories in his journals. The only thing he didn't like about his new home was how alone he felt. He didn't think that he'd ever lived alone before.

It was lonely...

He wondered how Steve was doing in the future.

Steve looked well adjusted on TV, but he also only looked like Captain America. He didn't look like Steve Rogers.

But then again, he didn't look like Bucky Barnes. He'd dyed his hair blue and gotten glasses. The blue made him stand out a little, but he liked it. He liked doing things for himself like buying a soft blanket, wearing mismatched clothes, and binge-watching TV shows.

He even started cooking.

At first, food had been hard.

Hydra hadn't fed him a lot. After cyro, they'd put in an IV and make him choke down a powder-protein shake.

At first, he'd barely been able to eat anything, but he had something to live for.

Something that Hydra had never taken away.

Something that he had to keep safe.
