Chapter 2

You watched through the hospital window as people walked along the hallway. You didn’t know most of these people, some nurses, doctors, visitors. To be honest, you didn’t care to know them apart from your nurse and doctor.

It had been a couple of weeks since you had arrived back at the compound. Someone had found you and brought you to the compound medical wing.

After you had woken up and heard those dreadful words, you had asked the doctor to transfer you to an actual hospital. You couldn’t bear to be around your team. The words echoed in your head like a broken record. You didn’t know who had said them; you didn’t care to know.

“How the hell did nobody notice they were gone for two weeks?”

That’s exactly what you had started to wonder, too. All those weeks at the enemy’s base, brutally tortured, you had only survived with the thought that your team was coming for you. The Avengers were coming for you. S.H.I.E.L.D was coming for you. Nobody had come for you. Instead, the enemy kicked you off a moving vehicle a few miles away from the compound after they deemed you worthless for their purpose.

What happened to the courageous, selfless Captain America? Your captain. It wouldn’t be as unusual for your other teammates to notice your absence, but how did your captain not notice? Wasn’t he supposed to check everyone was onboard at the quinjet before it took off? Apparently not.

The sheets of the bed felt harsh against your bruised skin. The room was way too cold for your liking and the food was awful. You wanted nothing more than to go back home.

Home. The place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or household.

You had lived the past few years at the compound. That was home. Was. Now, the compound felt nothing like home. So where was this home you craved?

You had told the hospital staff you wanted no visitors, and to not even know if someone tried reaching you. You didn’t want to hear their half-assed apologies. If they had even tried to come to see you.

Though, today you had to face some of them. You were to go back to the compound just to collect your most vital belongings. You had talked to Director Fury about a transfer to another state, possibly even the west coast. And that’s where he situated you.

The compound was remotely empty; you heard a couple of people in the living room, but you dodged everyone on your way to your room.

Two filled duffel bags later, you found yourself sneaking out. You caught a glimpse of what you assumed to be the back of Natasha’s head. Apart from that, you managed to get out, and hit the road.

“…Natasha and y/n. Where are they?” Steve’s eyes met Natasha’s, but they never found yours. Fury had assigned the team a new mission, and after going over the basics, Steve listed people he’d need for the mission. Mumbling filled the room as everyone started speculating about your whereabouts.

“They asked for a transfer some time ago, hadn’t you noticed before? No wonder they were eager to get out.” Fury told the team and rolled his eye.

“Y/n is located in San Francisco, and they’re not coming back.”
