Chapter 3

It had been a couple of months since you had unofficially left the avengers and gotten your transfer to San Fransisco. With that transfer came a new beginning, a new team, a new family and new missions. Adapting had been hard at first, but the agents took you in happily. They helped you get to know the house’s ways, and how they worked as a team. At this point, it didn’t even hurt to say that you didn’t miss the avengers one bit. They had been cold and distant to you.

If you had any expectations, the last one was that they would come to see you. That’s why on a very casual Tuesday when you were walking down a hallway in the S.H.I.E.LD compound, you got the surprise of a lifetime when you saw a handful of people in the common room. Steve Rogers, Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff.

You cursed yourself and walked into the room.

“Won’t you look at that, the mighty Avengers? How can us humble agents serve you on this fine day?” You asked sneeringly and saw all of their heads whip into your direction almost as fast as light.

“We were looking for you,” Steve said your name before telling you what you already knew.

“There’s a mission in Mexico and we need you there.” Tony took his chance to explain.

“Who did the order come from?” You questioned.

“Director Fury,” Natasha told you. “Listen y/n-”

“I don’t care. Let’s just get this mission handled.”

A quick briefing and a showcase of your immediate team went well. Now you, your team and the handful of Avengers were sitting on the quinjet, on your way to the destination. You had been chatting with your team, not caring about the others. Not that you had much to say to them anyhow.

“Ay, y/n, you know we still got a spot for you in our team for when you ditch these losers.” Tony blurted that out of nowhere. Your head whipped in his direction.

“No, thank you. I’m quite keen on my team of losers.”

“Y/n, we really want you back.” Natasha quipped. “We’re all really sorry about how we treated you. It’s obviously up to you, but all of us are expecting you to come back home.”

“Thanks for the offer, but no thanks. I’m happier here.” You said and stepped off the quinjet once the door had opened.

The avengers were stunned how gracefully you and your team moved on the field, communicating better than they ever had. Steve would never admit it, but he was jealous of how much of a natural role you took in leading. The only fault at the mission was how a part of a crumbling building hit you in the arm.

You were sure it was broken once you made it back to the jet. In no time, your team was praising you in reassurances and tending to whatever need you would have. The avengers watched in bitterness. Natasha had tried to beg you to come back whilst on the mission, but you had set it on the stone that you wouldn’t budge. As of the moment, you were in the middle of a heated argument with Steve.

“Listen, Steve. You treated me unfair. And now I’m here. And I’m happy here. I do not wish to be a part of the Avengers anymore.”

Steve let out an annoyed sigh.

“As you wish, then.”

It seemed as if you had truly made up your mind.
