An Awkward Meeting
September 10th
Friday
Her first two classes hadn’t been that horrible. Well as good as required classes can be.
Free period was boring. The most she did was locate the rest of her classes and then scout out nice secluded places to hang out.
And now it was lunch. Thanks to the free period she got to be part of the early kids to lunch. Which didn't seem so important before this morning when kids raced to be first to breakfast.
So here she was. Sitting at an empty table eating a somewhat decent ham sandwich, along with a really good apple.
Soon enough the cafeteria was buzzing with commotion. A boy in a purple sweater came and sat down, and almost pretended as if Natasha wasn't there. Which she would almost find it offensive if it wasn't for the fact that she also didn't want to talk to anyone.
But the silence didn't last long.
“Science kid, science kid what was his name again- Bruce! Rhodey c'mon let's go sit over there.” Tony explained
Natasha only knew his name because he was in her English class and he was very loud and talkative. Rhodey who she assumed was his friend she did not know however.
Bruce the kid next to her briefly looked up when his name was said.
“Science kid hello, how are you doing. Good, I hope.” Tony greeted placing down his plate of food
Bruce took a few seconds before answering, “Alright” then went back to sifting his spoon in the bowl of soup he had
“Ya’ know I really thought the food would be a lot worse. Compared to the food we had last year this is substantially better.” Tony continued taking a bite of his sandwich
“There's also variety,” Rhodey added inserting himself into the conversation
Taking a small sip of his soup Bruce put the spoon back in the bowl and shook his head.
“The foods not that good.”
Tony just raised his eyebrow with a smirk on his face before turning to Natasha
“So- who are you”
And with a stiff smile she got up grabbing her trash and walked off saying, “Natasha”
She could hear a scoff and some mumbling. She would not make friends with the esteemed Tony Stark.
__
Never would Natasha imagine herself thinking, but here she was thinking how boring drama class was.
And maybe it was just the first day of school stuff, or maybe it was the teacher or the fact that nothing interesting was happening.
Maybe it was all.
Pursing her lips, she eyed the clock. Maybe if she stared at it long enough time would go by much, much, quicker.
“Any questions?” Mr. Garner asked looking over the students
Natasha had to force herself to not make some sort of snarky remark, but she didn’t need that. Not today. Maybe if this boringness continued then yeah she could do that.
“No questions? Nothing?”. . .“Well then if anyone would like to come up to the front and take part of a demonstration.?” Mr. Garner asked and Natasha’s hand shot up, along with another's.
Looking over to the person who had their hand up, her eyes laid upon Thor Odinson (so great she has two classes with famous people).
"Well it looks as we have two volunteers." Mr. Garner said thoughtfully, "Although it looks like red head over there raised her hang up first. If I remember correctly"
Odinson slumped down, but did complain as Natasha stood up.
She would take this chance. If this class could become more interesting she would do anything.
“Okay, and what was your name again?”
“Natasha”
“Well Natasha I want you to come down here and tell me why all of my chickens are gone?”
Chickens? Why were his chickens gone…?
Standing up she headed to the front of the class, “Sir I don't know what you mean. They were all here this morn’n”
“All six? All six of my wonderful chickens were here this morning?” Mr. Garner demanded
“Yes all six Sir.”
“You liar! I saw you this morning kidnapping my poor chickens!” Mr. Garner accused pointing angrily at Natasha, and the rest of the students looked very invested in the demonstration
Natasha stumbled on her words for a few seconds trying to think of what to say next, “You think you can just take my beautiful chickens from me?!” He continued to accuse
“I- I needed them! We are poor and starving!” Natasha pulled out nowhere
“You ate my chickens!” Mr. Garner gasped and so did a few other kids
“What! No! I sold them to a butcher for money!”
“Even worse!”
And just at that moment the bell rang and the teacher clapped.
“Good performance Natasha. I expect great things from you.”
Natasha mentally caught her breath before grabbing her bag and heading out the class. A few students gave her a thumbs up or even told her she did a good job.
And Odinson also complimented her performance with a wide smile. Which confused her a little bit, but decided not to question it too much and continue on.
Now that the school day was over she needed to find some sort of extracurricular or a club to join. And lucky for her Natasha knew what she wanted to do. Now finding where it took place would be much harder.
It took a bit but she finally found a teacher. It was Miss Shanon and Natasha had politely asked her where the club took place and where to find it. She gave a brief answer saying it was in room 213 before going to help some other kids.
On the second floor tucked into a nice corner was Room 213.
Opening the door she was greeted to an older student (most likely a senior) sitting on the front desk and… Tony Stark?
“Oh- Angry Girl” he called out when he saw her
“Why angry girl?” she mused
“Because when I asked for your name you angrily walked away” giving a very simple answer to her question
“Speaking of names, I'm Carol and what is yours” The senior upfront, Carol asked
“Natasha” She answered observing the classroom.
It was filled with your stereotypical desks you would see in movies or shows and they were all pushed up against the back of the classroom, so there was just an open space in the front. There was a chalkboard instead of a white board and the windows were covered in blinds.
It was a pretty odd room, to be honest.
“Do you run this club?” She asked looking back over to Carol
“Nahhh- well kinda. I'm like the vice president of the club if that's what you wanna call it. Fury’s out doin other club stuff so I'm here to just explain what this club is, some requirements and then bounce cause I got tryouts I need to do” Carol explain as another student entered the class
“Is this the Service Club…?” he asked barely stepping into the room
“Yes. Name?”
“Steve”
They fully walked into the room and just as Natasha did, observed the room. Although this time he showed his confusion to the weirdness of the room.
The room stayed pretty quiet. If anything awkward when another kid walked in.
“Clint Barton” he stated almost instinctively, and Natasha couldn’t help but smile
“Ah, your the kid Jiles recommended. Ok.”
When Clint saw her instead of his bored expression a smile crept to his face
“Sup Hawkeye”
“Nat” his voice was monotone but there was a hint of fondness
“And I thought I was the one to suffer alone in this school.” Clint stated sarcastically
“You to know each other or somethin?” Tony asked a questioning look on his face
Clint had gone to sit on the floor by the window sill where Natasha was standing
Natasha didn’t answer nor did Clint. Instead, they just stared Tony up in down before Clint gave her a judging look, eyebrow raised and she just shrugged her shoulders
Tony’s face was pure gold of confusion and he muttered something under his breath, while Steve semi-watched while also looked like he was just thinking very deeply about something.
Bruce entered the room, and Tony’s face accompanied by Clint's almost lit up seeing him
“Science Kid!”
“Hey, Tony”
“Yo, I know you you’re the kid from the bus” Clint thought aloud
Bruce looked visibly confused and Clint paused for a second before elaborating.
“We sat next to each other on the bus here remember.”
Bruce looked him up and down before slowly nodding, “Yea I remember you. How’d you recognize me?”
“You’re wearing the same purple sweater.”
“Oh”
It was silent again for a couple of seconds before Carol spoke up, “Cute y’all know each other but I need a name”
“Sorry, Bruce Banner”
Tony motioned for Bruce to sit next to him, and Bruce did, giving Tony an accomplished look.
After that, it really was silent for a good while. At some point, Steve had grabbed out a notebook and started sketching something while Natasha had moved from standing, to sitting next to Clint.
Carol looked slightly impatient before she set her clipboard down and looked to all of them.
“Okay, Im going to assume this is everyone-” Just as she started talking another guy burst into the room.
“Sorry am I late?” He asked a somewhat frustrated Carol
“Yes. Now what’s your name.”
“Thor Odinson”
Carol wrote his name down on the clipboard and muttered something under breath about having too famous people in the club, before getting ready to speak
“Okay! Welcome to the service club. As the name states, in this club you will be participating in lots of community stuff, from picking up trash and helping out around the school, to participating in communal events with the town. There will be at least two meetings every week I’ll check you guys every once in a while, and if y’all are lucky maybe Fury will come around.”
And with that Carol stood up and started leaving
“Are you just leaving us?” Steve called looking a bit surprised
“Yea, I have tryouts I need to make. I'm counting on you guys being pretty self-sufficient and do all this stuff as a group.” And with that Carol left.
The group was left in a state of shock for a brief second before looking around to each other as if waiting for someone to take charge.
And the person to take charge looked to be Tony.
“Well if no one going to do it I will. Let's start off with names. I'm Tony Stark.”
It was awkwardly silent after that. So Natasha sucked in a breath and presented herself.
“I'm Natasha. Also maybe with our names we should state why we’re here in this club.” She added to which Tony nodded in agreement
“I'm here cause Rhodey thought this would be a good idea for me.”
“I'm here because I want to help out the community.”
Bruce sighed, “I'm Bruce, and I like helping out.”
“Steve. And I'm here because Bucky said I should get out and make friends.”
“Clint, and I don't want to be here. But Mrs. Jiles signed me up”
“Thor Odinson, and I'm here because I thought it would be an interesting club to join.
And just like that, the awkward silence came back.
“So um, what do we do next” Clint said
