You get hurt, hurt 'em back
PREVIOUSLY ON: Dawn of New Change
Taeyong and the other Avengers all don their suits, ready to head to Sokovia and take down Ultron. He meets with Wanda and Pietro and tells them exactly what he thinks of them. He and Pietro have to team up to help the citizens of Sokovia leave their city.
Meanwhile, Tony has found Ultron, whose built a giant pole of vibranium that runs under the city, what it does? He doesn't know just yet.
Taeyong and Pietro were beside each other watching as the Legionnaire popped out from underground. "Christ?!" Taeyong said, spinning and flying backwards as an Iron Legion suit literally broke free from one of the underground sewage systems and made a grab for his legs. His hands came forward, bearing down and shooting at the Iron Legion face plate until it was scattered all over the road.
His mask opened and he turned to Pietro who was staring down at the bot with wide eyes. "Ultron?"
"He's going to destroy the city," Taeyong said, looking upwards as more revving sounds started to overtake the general screams of the citizens. Wanda's hold over them crumbled as people blinked back into their own consciousness, they started to run and scream in different directions whilst Taeyong flew up, hoping to take some of the Legionnaires down. He shot his repulsors from high up, flying over and creating a shield with his body, taking any hits that the Legionnaires started to fire down at the city.
"You are taking too much collateral damage, Sir. You must fall back-"
"Pietro, grab the debris!" Taeyong warned, ignoring FRIDAY to continue fighting. He flew faster in his suit and started to aim more Iron Legion suits in Clint's direction, helping the Avenger shoot them down in multiples. Clint was tasked with Wanda, the both of them starting to work to help make sure the citizens that were running around with their heads off their shoulders, got to safety.
"Cap?"
"Still on the bridge," Steve replied. "Thor? How's down under?"
Thor was somewhere underground. Taeyong had been sent the same scan that FRIDAY had used on the vibranium contraption at the heart of the church. Thor's mission was to find out what exactly Ultron was trying to do with his machine and possibly put a stop to it. Knowing Ultron, Taeyong wouldn't have been surprised if trying to get rid of it meant that something would happen to Sokovia. The last thing the country needed was more loss from Americans.
Taeyong flew into the centre of the city, looking over at the buildings and hissing. "Is there any structure that can hold the Legionnaire off? FRIDAY?"
"The abbey theatre," she replied quickly.
Taeyong nodded, feeling his mask slide forward and he flew down. He quickly ushered people into the giant building. "Hey," a hand settled over his shoulder. Taeyong turned and looked up at Pietro, "I'm going to go and take on the west side."
"Okay," Taeyong nodded quickly, "I'll help afterwards. Keep me updated." He didn't wait for Pietro to confirm anything before attending back to the people. "Priority is getting these people out of here," he said in the comms.
"Affirmative," Steve said quickly with a grunt on his side.
"Family, in a car. At your 12 o'clock," FRIDAY voiced. Taeyong flew forward, shoving his hand into a broken car handle and ripping its door completely off its hinges. His gauntlet unwrapped itself from his hand and he held onto the mothers hand, helping her climb out. She didn't leave, instead rounding to the back of the car. Taeyong crawled forward, the front half of his suit slowly unwrapping itself from his body. He held his hand out to the other mother, sitting at the wheel, who was thrashing and crying in her seat.
"Hey, hey, hey," he smiled, hands coming slowly towards her until he cradled her face. "I'm Taeyong," he said slowly.
"Ja- Ja som- Adela," (trans: my name is Adela) she breathed in deeply, blinking quickly.
"Adela," Taeyong repeated. "I'm going to get you out of here." He reached backwards, taking his gauntlet and holding the wheels of the car that was squashing her legs in place. "FRIDAY use 5% of my thrusters okay?" without waiting for her confirmation, he started to push upwards. Taeyong and Adela both watched as the dashboard and wheel popped, until she could squirm out. Taeyong reached over her, opening the door lock and letting her completely scramble out of the car.
He turned quickly when the boot of the car unlocked and the mother from before reached inwards to help get her child from the backseats. Taeyong reached forward, helped the crying child unlock their seatbelt and then pushed them through to the back. He got out of the car, letting his own suit curve itself onto his body. Taeyong flew forward and pointed back to the theatre, letting them go as he started to fly and look around for more civilians.
"I think I'm good here," he said, starting to turn towards the East of the town centre when a panting voice cracked through his comms.
"I- I- urgh- could use some help," Pietro said.
Taeyong nodded and flew over with FRIDAY's instructions. "What's this then? Someone knocked you down a peg?" he teased.
"Ah shut it kid-"
"Kid?!" Taeyong gasped, letting FRIDAY zoom in on Pietro who was ducking behind a wooden picnic table, currently defending himself from three Iron Legion suits. Taeyong flew over and started to shoot at them, taking two down easily and then shoving the third bodily onto the ground. He landed just beside Pietro and smirked, opening his mask, "I'm two years younger than you."
Pietro scoffed, but he was slumped against the picnic table, painting heavily. "A child," he said.
Taeyong furrowed his brows, crawling over and placing a hand over Pietro's shoulder. "You okay?"
"Just- just tired."
"We just started."
Pietro rolled his eyes, wincing as he stood up with shaky legs. "Piss off."
Taeyong chuckled, before his eyes widened. "You're super fast right? Like the Flash?"
"The what?"
"Flash?" Taeyong tilted his head, tapping on a small panel by his right thigh. "Barry Allen? You never read a comic? Anyway, he- like Cap, or Hulk, or sometimes even the Widow." Taeyong took out his pack of Skittles, shaking the packet in front of Pietro's wide and hungry eyes. "They need sugar sometimes."
Pietro snatched it out of Taeyong's hand, ripping the packet and munching on the candy like it was his last meal. Taeyong rolled his eyes, "a thank you would be nice."
"Thanks," Pietro grunted, wiping his lips.
"Ultron has successfully been sealed from the Net," FRIDAY stated.
Taeyong grinned, looking up at Pietro, "Vision did it."
"He did," Pietro nodded slowly, before he puffed out his chest and turned to look at the rest of the city. "We continue fighting?"
"We do," Taeyong said, ready to put up his face mask as another Iron Legion bot started to fire at the both of them before a striking voice was called.
"Best friend protocol in place," The Iron Legion bot turned its repulsors at Pietro and fired instead. Taeyong watched as Pietro's blur jumped against the picnic table and came crashing down onto the Iron Legion bot.
Taeyong stared at its remains in awe. "What?" Pietro spat, stretching his shoulders.
"It- did-" Taeyong blinked, "did you hear what it said?"
"Yeah, so what?"
"The best friend protocol..." Taeyong whispered. "The best friend protocol..."
***
"He's my best friend," Taeyong said easily, sipping on more of his dad's homemade green juice.
"What?" Bruce asked, taking off his glasses.
Taeyong simply continued with his drink, not deeming to answer Bruce. He had finished typing out the code that would basically make sure that Ultron's sub priority would remain with Taeyong. He started putting codes like that after trying to make his own Jarvis, a UI that was created to help Taeyong for his every need. Pretty cool coding.
"Like the skittles pocket in my Iron Man suit?" Tony asked, walking past Taeyong. Taeyong nodded, still entering in new code. "You do understand that Ultron is for the public right?"
"He shall be my best friend and I will take no complaints," Taeyong said. "Jarvis look over this code will yer?"
"Of course Taeyong."
***
"Okay that's a buggy one," Taeyong coughed, opening up his mask and then pushing his helmet off completely. The suit that was shooting at both Steve and Taeyong stopped. "It- what?-"
'Please back away- Taeyong Lee-Stark-'
"Is he calling you?" Steve asked.
"Apparently?!" Taeyong ducked, flying away and scanning the room.
***
Ultron turned to stare at Taeyong then, who flinched when a woosh sound came from his left and Mjolnir flew straight into Ultron. Taeyong yelled, almost falling over as Ultron's body smashed into the wall and Tony started to shout.
"Don't worry best friend," Ultron whispered. Taeyong's eyes widened and he felt his body go rigid, even as Tony pulled him away. "I had strings, but now I'm free."
Taeyong let Tony pull him away.
"There are no strings on me."
***
"The best friend protocol!" Taeyong said, lips pulling themselves into a mighty grin. Pietro just looked confused but Taeyong raced forward, letting his suit's mask stay off. He started to fire at the rest of the Legionnaire noting that whenever they got to him, scanned his face, would not touch him.
"That- how are they doing that?" Pietro questioned.
"I put in a best friend code," Taeyong said. "They won't attack me, that directly goes against my coding," he breathed.
"Why, pray tell, did you not do this for everyone else?" Thor gasped from the comms.
"To be fair, Ultron wasn't supposed to kill anyone," Bruce said. "Also I got Black Widow online everyone."
"Hello lads," Natasha said, her voice sounding like a satisfied grin.
"Good to have you back Widow," Steve said.
Taeyong flew down and started to fire at the rest of the Legionnaires that were surrounding Pietro. "Pietro, you get the civilians, I'll handle the Iron Legion," he ordered, taking off. Taeyong started to fire against the Iron Legions, repulsors shooting with not-so accurate precision now that he couldn't actually see with zooming and FRIDAY's help. But whenever the Iron Legion tried to fight back, they couldn't. It was like watching a real life glitch happen before him and Taeyong took those precious seconds of the suits trying to reconfigure against his coding to stop them.
He stopped when he heard a yelp and turned in that direction. "Pietro?" he asked.
"I- I- can't- help!"
"On it!" Taeyong called, his mask slid back into place and he shot forward, using his boost to get to the twin faster. Pietro was on the second story of an open blasted building. There were children around him and Iron Legion suits that were starting to attack him. Taeyong quickly got rid of them whilst Pietro tried to get all the children through the main stairway and out of the room they were in, when it caved. Taeyong didn't think, flying over and holding the crumbling ceiling with a strain in his muscles. His legs shook inside the suit and Taeyong quickly got FRIDAY to lock all the joints of his suit in place.
"I need to get out of here."
"That's the only suit you have, Sir."
"Just get me out of here," Taeyong's front opened and he stepped out. He fell forward and crawled into the room. There were five children in total, all standing around Pietro. "Get them out of here," he panted, looking up at Pietro who nodded with wide eyes. Taeyong groaned, standing up and blinking at the dark spots invading his vision. He hissed, hands coming up and holding his head as a wave of dizziness washed over him.
Pietro had managed to grab two kids, running out leaving Taeyong with three of them.
"Potrebujem pomoc," (trans: I need help) one of the kids said, pointing down to their leg. Taeyong bent forward and hissed.
"Okay, okay I'm going to get you out of here. Don't worry," he said, arms coming out and letting the child fall into them. Taeyong held them tightly against his chest and ushered the other kids to crawl under his suits legs. They were crying but did manage to crawl from under his suit and Taeyong held the child in his arms tighter. "It's okay, it's okay."
"Pre- prepacte," (trans: sorry) the child cried and Taeyong leant back, wiping their face with his shirt sleeve.
"I don't know what you're saying but I'm gonna get you help," He whispered. "I promise. Pietro?"
"I can't get back in, it's all crumbling. I can try climb?"
Taeyong looked back at his suit, which was still in the same position of holding up the fallen ceiling. He looked back out at the open wall blasted. "Catch me," Taeyong said.
"What?" Taeyong tucked the child's head under his chin and got back up, wincing at his weak muscles. He raced forward and ducked, falling out of the building. "Oh shi-"
When he next opened his eyes, Taeyong was lying on the ground, surrounded by a large cloud of dust and standing over him was Pietro with the kid cradled in his own arms. "You are," Pietro bent down, letting the kid sit backwards, "the most craziest person I have ever met."
Taeyong let his head fall backwards and he lay there for a second, "yeah... yeah okay. That- that's fair judgement."
"Dakujem," (trans: thank you.) the kid said, getting up and limped/ran away with his other friends or siblings. Taeyong didn't know, he simply took Pietro's offered hand and stood up, looking over the building.
"FRIDAY? Think you can get my suit-" Taeyong and Pietro both flinched backwards, staring as the building crumbled completely to the ground- "back..."
"Well that is just unlucky," Pietro whistled. "Timing is good though?"
Taeyong scrunched his nose, "timing is good? Timing is good?! My suit's gone!"
"You have to admit, the comedic timing is good, no? Like in those sitcoms of yours."
Taeyong punched him.
"Urgh, so I know what Ultron has created... you are not going to like it though."
Taeyong frowned, both he and Pietro shared a worried look. "What's up Thor?" They didn't need an explanation when the ground started to crumble beneath them. Taeyong fell backwards again and Pietro held his own arms out trying to regain balance. Suddenly, Taeyong's stomach made a swooping sort of feeling and he watched as the building crumbled before them started to really fall to pieces. They both watched it get ripped in two, the front just debris as the ground they were on started to rise.
"We are floating," Pietro was gaping, grabbing Taeyong by his pits and shuffling them backwards as the ground started to come apart at each cobblestone and fall back to the ground. "What do we do?"
"My suit," Taeyong whispered, "well now that's never coming back."
"You take away my world," came a chilling voice. Ultron. "I'll take away yours.
"Do you see it? The beauty of it? The inevitability. You rise, only to fall. You, Avengers, you are my meteor. My swift and terrible sword and the Earth will crack with the weight of your failure. Purge me from your computers, turn my own flesh against me. It means nothing. When the dust settles, the only thing living in this world will be metal."
***
Tony flew out of the city until he got a safe distance away and when he turned to look back, what greeted him was the entire city of Novi Grad floating. Whatever it was that Ultron had built, it extended around the city and used helicarrier technology to power up and hold the city. But it would not stop, no. Novi Grad continued to float higher and higher into the air as buildings, structures and vehicles started to become ripped apart and fall over the edge.
A huge wave of dust and debris scattered onto the ground below and still the city continued on its heightened path to somewhere. Tony's eyes widened and everything seemed to create a dull buzz, everyone through the comms kept talking over each other but Tony couldn't hear a word. When FRIDAY scanned the structure, she pointed out the gridding pattern of the large vibranium core that Ultron had built stabbed through the city, into its underground.
"The vibranium core's got a magnetic field. That's what's keeping the rock together."
Tony narrowed his eyes, "if it drops?"
"Right now, the impact will kill thousands. Once it gets high enough?" Tony's eyes lifted upwards, looking at the parting clouds. "Global extinction." Tony nodded, already starting to fly closer to the large floating city, he was just beside a building of apartments that started to crumble onto the ground level when FRIDAY's voice called on him again. "That building's not clear. The 10th floor."
Tony flew into the window, shattering the glass and charging up his repulsors. He looked around at a family that stared back at him with obvious fear. A father had his arms around his wife and two kids, Tony waved once. "Hi... uh..." his eyes quickly took in the state of the room. They were between a kitchen and a bathroom. "Okay. Get in the tub!" he ordered, pointing in that direction. They quickly climbed in and Tony got behind everyone, hands gripping the edge of the tub before he ran for the open window. He charged up his flight boosters and with them all ducking down, he flew straight out of the window and into the open air.
"I got airbourne, heading up to the bridge."
Tony nodded, "Cap! You've got incoming!"
Steve, who had witnessed the bridge structure rip itself in two from the pull as the entire city started to float, was standing on a car. He turned his back for one second and was tackled backwards, flying as the Iron Legion suit threw him bodily into a car. Steve groaned, getting up and shaking his head. "Yeah... incoming already came," he said into the comms, before flattening himself as two more Iron Legion suits flew over him.
"Stark, you worry about bringing the city back down safely," he got up from the car, rolling onto the ground and standing up fully. "The rest of us have one job," he said, "tear these things apart. You get hurt, hurt 'em back. You get killed..." Steve threw his shield at one of the Legionnaires, cutting it cleanly in half. "Walk it off," he panted slightly, before walking back towards the bridge edge.
Then the tell-tale roar of one Hulk cut through the harsh screaming and Steve ducked his head down, smirking a little. "Nat?"
"This felt like a Code Green situation," was the only reply she gave.
Steve shrugged, deeming that a satisfactory response before he started to run back to the bridge. There were two cars on the edge of the bridge, a bright red one with a woman screaming it slowly started to topple just off the edge. Steve assessed the situation, because the other car held two men who were trying to reverse back, but couldn't. "Taeyong, I'm gonna need some flight."
"Ha! So... about that..."
"The kid's suit went crashing with a building," Pietro explained.
Steve titled his head, quickly running over and grabbing the red car's bumper, trying to pull it back.
"What the hell?!"
"Dad no- I! Pietro you fucking snitch-"
"What? That is what happened!"
"You need to get out of there!"
"I need a suit, call one to me-"
"From America?!"
"Satellite it?"
"Veronica's been down since Banner decided to go all green in South Africa."
"...yeah sorry about that."
"Wanda, now is really not the time."
"No, no, I could do with a much needed apology. You're sister was a bitch-"
"What did you just say!"
Steve grunted his teeth clenched as his muscles seized and suddenly the bumper of the car he was holding gave out and that was all that he had gripped on. The car fell and the woman inside of it screamed. "Shut up and help me!"
"Incomiiinnnggg!" boomed Thor's familiar voice, who swooped down. Mjolnir was clutched just in front of him as he dived off the side of the bridge and grabbed the car. Steve looked over, making eye contact with Thor, who gave a simple nod. Steve took a couple steps back and then jumped over the bridge.
One arm stuck out to grab at the edge of the city's broken concrete and then the lady. She flew up, after Thor tossed her into the air, and grabbed Steve's hand. He hissed, feeling his shoulders scream at the sudden tension pulling at them. Steve looked down at her, she was still screaming with tears running down her temples. "I got you! Don't look down! Look at me!" he ordered, "Look at me!"
Pulling her up again, he let go of her wrist and grabbed her around the waist, tucking her in properly, before he started to climb back up the structure. Steve pushed her upwards, letting her climb fully before he sprung upwards and jumped just behind her. A Legionnaire crawled over to them quickly, with Ultron's voice coming from it. "You can't save them all! You'll never-" Steve threw his shield, watching it get stuck in it's chest.
"Never what?" he asked, holding his arm out and letting the magnet pull the shield back into its lock. The Legionnaire fell backwards from the force, over the cliff and Steve peered over. "Never what? You didn't finish!" he shouted, before shrugging. She ran off and Thor came flying back, with the second car on his shoulders. He set it down on the ground and patted the hood of it, before ripping the door off and walking back. "Took you long enough. What, were you napping?"
"Oho, you'd know all about napping, wouldn't you?" Thor teased, already jogging into the fray of it all. Steve smirked, throwing his shield forward.
NEXT TIME ON: Dawn of New Change
Taeyong groaned, "we wouldn't have this problem if I had my suit!"
Pietro scoffed, "you're the one that left it."
"The building was coming down!"
"And? How is that my fault?"
