Chapter 2

Gus: “Annnd we’re back.

So, Amity, we all know the story. The listeners might already know too, since I’ve spoken with Luz and Willow about their first interaction before, and they may or may not have mentioned… you.

But I’d love to hear from your perspective. How did that day go down for you?”

Amity: “I’m not proud of that day, Gus. Well, not proud of myself, that’s a better way of describing it. I got to meet Luz, so that’s a positive. *Laughs*

Uhm, I started that day feeling really confident about myself. I had my Top Student badge on and I was ready to present my abomination to the teacher. As I was heading to school, I saw Willow and I thought I’d be a good idea to give her a… little pep talk.

But not a normal pep talk, like your coach would do or something.

No, I decided to embarrass her with my abomination. Willow was not very good at abominations and I knew that all too well. So, I told her that it was my duty to tell her to keep it up. I told her that she could get a passing grade one day.

And I said it in the most sarcastic way possible. So when I thought I was telling her to keep it up, I was basically saying she was terrible and should quit. And that was a great example of me justifying my deeds.

I never called her a name or something, but I did embarrass her, I embarrassed her real good. I thought I was toughening Willow up, but instead I made her feel more insecure about herself then she already was.

And the worst part about it all was… Luz saw it all happening. She saw me being a bully. So Luz’s first ever impression of me was me being the absolute worst of myself. Luz must have thought I was an awful person, and she was right if she thought that.”

Gus: “It really shows that first impressions don’t really matter. But also, because she saw you make Willow feel insecure, she decided to help her out. She might have never gone and pretend to be her abomination if you didn’t gave her that pep talk.”

Amity: “Yes, and Luz told me that as well. She thought I was just some jerk that needed to be taken down a notch. And she was absolutely right by doing so.”

Gus: “So listeners, if you haven’t listened to Willow’s episode yet, here’s the story:

Luz saw Amity giving Willow an embarrassing pep talk, which made Willow feel really insecure about herself. Willow wasn’t great at making abominations and that day, she needed to present her abomination.

So, Luz, being the helpful person she is, offered to be Willow’s fake abomination so she would pass. Willow hesitated at first, but after Amity’s pep talk, she decided to go with it.

she wanted to show that she could be as good as a witch.”

Amity: “Willow used to be called Half-a-witch Willow. I’m not justifying that name or anything now, but she just wasn’t great at making abominations. And combining the insecurity, urge to prove herself and our history as friends, she felt like she needed to take me down. I would have probably done the same.

I always thought that Willow chose the abomination track because it was the track she was the least bad at. I thought Willow couldn’t do any kind of magic properly, and since the abomination track, back in the day, used to be pretty ‘classy’, Willow just went with that one.

I never considered her choosing it due to her parents’ will. She was forced to choosing it, which was so sad… So, she just wanted to be … a good student for once, even though she knew she was about to cheat.”

Gus: “Yes, Willow’s parents forced her to pick that track. If you want to hear the story of why that was the case, feel free to listen to Willow’s story.

But anyways, I remember going to school that day, thinking about how cool the Human Realm is and stuff. I went over to Willow as usual and then she showed me her fake abomination and it turned out to be Luz!

I couldn’t believe it! A human, coming out of an abomination barrel! I always dreamed about meeting an actual human, and there she was! You know listeners… I was the president of the human appreciation society.

I couldn’t wait to hear from her at lunch, but before that, she needed to go into acting mode, because she was about receive an A+…

Amity: “An A+. Luz, if your listening, you got an A+ as an abomination. I never got a chance to congratulate you, so hereby, batata. *Chuckles*

No, uhm… yeah, I was stunned. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I saw Willow’s abomination before class and it… it just couldn’t be!

How did she do it? I thought. I started to suspect her really fast. While everyone was congratulating Willow for receiving an A+, I went over to her to tell her I had my eyes on her.”

Gus: “Mainly because she took away your Top Student badge, right?”

Amity: “Oh yeah, since Willow received an A+, she automatically took over the role of Top Student. And you know, that badge meant everything to me!

I couldn’t go home that day and tell my mom I had lost it to none other than Half-a-Witch Willow! She would punish me!

So I had to do everything to take that badge away from her as fast as possible. I kept my eyes on her the entire day and at lunch… I saw what I was suspecting… her abomination… it was someone pretending to be an abomination!”

Gus: “It was Luz!”

Amity: “It was Luz… As soon as I saw her, I jumped on you guys’ lunch table and grabbed her by her shirt and started to shake her like some sort of animal. I was acting like a maniac. I was screaming so hard… ugh…”

Gus: “May I quote?”

Amity: “You may….”

Gus: “I saw that! Abominations don’t eat! I know you’re in there, you can’t hide from me! What are you, who are you?! I want answers!

Those were the first words Amity ever said to her current wife, listeners. And she’s not proud of it, I can assure you.”

Amity: “Nope. Hehe. I was acting so, so crazy… I needed that badge so badly, and I saw that Willow was cheating, so I just jumped on that table without thinking and started screaming… oof… I’m glad the teacher came on second thought.

I don’t know what I would have done to Luz and Willow if he didn’t order me to report to the principal’s office.”

Gus: “Well, not dissecting her, yet.” *Laughs*

Amity: *Chuckles* “I think I would have showed her to everyone. I wanted to prove Willow was cheating, but I think no one really cared for that.

So I eventually felt confident that I could prove to the principal that Willow’s abomination was, indeed, a person. And not a REAL one. So, dissecting Willow’s abomination seemed like the perfect way to do that!”

Gus: “Yeah, you went really far, didn’t you. You knew it was a person, but you were still okay with dissecting her? You had zero boundaries.”

Amity: “Zero. That person needed to take the blame for what they did. I didn’t know anything about Luz yet, I just thought it was some nerd Willow recently met or something.

Again, you don’t understand how badly I wanted that badge back. I didn’t care, but deep down I knew that if it was a real person, Willow wouldn’t have let them get dissected. Willow would have taken the blame and that was what I really wanted.”

“Yeah, I think Willow wouldn’t have let that happen. *Chuckles* So, after you told the principal about Willow’s abomination, he ordered Willow to dissect Luz.”

“Willow was the one who was going to dissect Luz. I could see the hesitation in her eyes. I was getting ready to grab that badge, but then I heard you screaming and in a split second, Luz and Willow were running away.

To be fair, if it wasn’t for your diversion, Luz might have not gotten away. So, thanks for that.”

Gus: “You’re welcome. I was definitely not going to let the first ever human I met get dissected. I pushed some abomination barrels on the floor and screamed: RUN!”

Amity: “Great, great diversion strats.” *Laughs*

Gus: “They were, indeed. But after they ran, you knew you were right. You knew that Willow’s abomination was fake. So I was wondering, did you really need to go after them?”

Amity: “Yes, I felt like I had to for… personal reasons. Or maybe I was just angry at Willow. And crazy. Both.

But Bump wanted to, I mean the principal at that time, wanted to go after Luz, too. He saw her as an intruder that needed to be punished. Eventually banned.”

Gus: “And by doing so, he put the entire school in a lockdown, so nobody could get in or out. Luz needed to escape, and thanks to Willow she managed so.”

Amity: “Willow helped Luz escape, thanks to her plant magic. It was really impressive, but I didn’t really realise that yet. I was, still, too focused on that badge.

I was going after Willow and Luz myself, too. But my magic wasn’t strong enough to catch both of them. Willow cast a spell that got Luz out. After she got her out, she surrendered and came clean about it all.”

Gus: “Yes, but she didn’t got punished, right?”

Amity: “Nope. The principal was so impressed by her plant magic, that he switched her to the plant track. And she even got to keep her top student bade!

I was furious! I begged the principal to give it back to me, but he told me to ask the abomination professor. He said that Willow was now top student at plant magic and that I had to earn I back by trying.

Principal Bump was never really a fan of me, even before that whole incident… He thought I was too obsessed about school, like trying to start a student council…”

Gus: *Laughing* “So you started that day feeling pretty confident, giving Willow a pep talk and all, but the day ended the worst possible way for you.
How did you feel about Willow switching tracks?”

Amity: “I was kind of glad she did. I mean, sure, I didn’t get to show off anymore, which I enjoyed and all, being the mean girl I was… But it also felt relieving I didn’t needed to do that anymore.

She could focus on her thing and I on my thing. I thought that day was the last time me and Willow would ever encounter. I thought that the story of me and Willow was finally over.”

Gus: “Wasn’t there a part of you that felt sad about that? About finally letting her go?”

Amity: “No… No, because she was going to do her own thing. She was going to be happier there, and that was what she deserved. I didn’t deserve her. I was just some braggy know it all. It felt relieving, and I thought that was it.”

Gus: “So, that day ended not so great for you, but also not for Luz, because she received a ban from Hexside. I remember that poster all to well.

I visited Luz after that incident with Willow and that was the start of our friendship. Me, Willow and Luz. I was excited to have a new friend and one that was a human? Amazing!

So I was excited to get to see her more often, but you definitely didn’t think you’d ever see her again. You didn’t even know who she was, yet. You just thought it was some freak, right?”

Amity: “Yeah. Some freak that got me in trouble! And I never got in trouble! I remember the poster, too. Couldn’t even look at it, or I’d get reminded of that incident.

I needed to forget that incident and move on, I thought. The convention was coming up, the perfect day to prove myself again. But, that day turned out to become even worse… or not.”

Gus: “Oooohhh, the convention. Listeners, the convention was an event that students could visit to see all the covens they could join. There was also a presentation of the Emperor’s coven.

Most students would go there to just hang out, but there were also students that actually joined a coven there. The covens that were not part of the ‘main nine’, tried to bribe students to join theirs, like the tiny cat coven.

Nothing excited ever happened at the convention, but at this convention… something exciting did happen… I got to see two witch duels!”

Amity:Andddd I was part of one of them!”*Chuckles*

Gus: “Yup. Listeners, Amity and Luz didn’t have a great start, we know that, but how they got in these kind of situations, I’m not so sure.”

Amity: “I was just minding my own business, up until someone bumped into me. It was just after the presentation. At the time, I would usually tell the person who bumped into me to scram, but this person… I remembered this person all to well.

It was Willow’s abomination from just a few days ago. She tried to nicely introduce herself to me, and being the mean girl I was, I told her to leave. I was still angry with her because of that incident.

But Luz, being the nice girl she is, didn’t leave though. She said that she was trying to become a witch. A human girl that’s trying to become a witch. Ridiculous! I thought. Humans can’t be witches!

I told her that loud and clear, but when she was still trying to defend herself, I thought I’d be a good move to squish King’s cupcake that he dropped on the floor. Awful, I know listeners, but I thought it was harmless. I just wanted Luz to leave.

But Luz didn’t leave. After I squished King’s cupcake, she came closer to me and challenged me to a witches duel.”

Gus: “Yeah. Luz really thought you needed to be put in your place, didn’t she?”

Amity: “She was right by doing so. I was being a jerk. Plus, Luz has always had this thing of like, standing up for the people she cares for. It didn’t matter to her that I was being mean to her, it mattered when I started being mean to King, her friend.

And that’s what I love about Luz. It doesn’t matter if someone’s tries to hurt her, but if someone’s trying to hurt a someone that’s close to her…. That does matter.
She will do anything to protect the people she cares about.

And by anything I’m not speaking figurately. She will literally do anything, how crazy it might be. She will get in these situations were I would be like, that’s impossible! But she still manages to do it!”

Gus: “Yeah, that moment was the first time you witnessed her standing up for someone. She challenged you, and you obviously accepted right away, didn’t you?”

Amity: “Of course I did! A human that tries to beat me? Ha! I was going to destroy her!

The terms were that if she would win, I had to apologize to King and admit that humans can be witches too. If I would win, Luz had to tell the whole convention she wasn’t a witch, but also, she had to stop training, forever. How mean!”

Gus: “So you were basically stopping her to ever become a witch, right? You knew she had no abilities.”

Amity: “I was pretty confident, yeah. I didn’t know about Luz’s tricks or so, yet, but I was confident about my own magic abilities. I was top student, you know…”

Gus: “Yes, you were. Did it feel like an opportunity for you, too? To show the whole convention what great of a witch you were?”

Amity: “Oh, yeah! Everyone would know. Even my parents. They would be proud of me. Putting a human in her place by slaying her in a witches duel.”

Gus: “So you were feeling pretty confident, but Luz on the other hand…”

Amity: “Luz was not. Haha. Being the reckless girl she was, and still is, she didn’t really thought it threw. How was she going to win with only her light spells?

That’s were Eda came to the rescue. Eda, who you probably all know, had a history with cheating her way to victory. So, being the cheat she… sometimes was, she put traps in the arena to help Luz to victory.”

Gus: “Oh, Eda…”

Amity: “Eda…”

Gus: “But here’s the funny thing. Luz didn’t know about the traps until the duel started, am I correct?”

Amity: “That’s correct. It wasn’t Luz’s idea to cheat and when she learned about it, she was actually trying to stop it! But I didn’t realise that, so I blamed Luz for cheating.

I thought I had won, obviously, because cheating was not allowed. I was ready to leave the arena, after I… said some more mean things to Luz, but while I was walking to the exit, Eda pulled me aside and pulled off some sticker from my neck.

It turned out to be a power glyph from the construction coven! Using that glyph makes your magic twice as strong, so that meant I was cheating! Me, cheating? How? I was confused at first, but quickly realised that it was Lilith that had put it on me.

Lilith, my mentor. The one who always believed I was a powerful witch with great potential to join the Emperor’s coven one day. I was one of her protégées! I was her top student! I… I was her favourite…

How could she do this? I immediately ran off. I felt heartbroken, humiliated, betrayed and worthless. Lilith had no faith in me. And I… I started to believe she was right…”

Gus: “You… started to feel like you weren’t as good as you thought?”

Amity: “I felt… like all my hard work hadn’t paid off. All those sessions with Lilith. They were worthless. She clearly didn’t have faith in me becoming an Emperor’s coven member one day.

My whole life was dedicated to that coven! And right there and then, she thought I’d be a great idea to cheat! Against a human! The whole audience was going to make fun of me…”

Gus: “So you ran off to some corner to calm down. You needed some space, but someone came to comfort you…”

Amity: “Yes. Luz came. Really sweet of her. It was our first… intimate moment together.

I was feeling down, and Luz knew that. She came to apologize, but I didn’t want her near me. I yelled at her. I said she lost and cheated. I wanted her to say that she wasn’t a witch. I wanted Luz to feel worthless, too.

After I yelled at her, she said those words. She said: I’m not a witch. And hearing her say that didn’t make me feel any better about myself. I thought it would, but it didn’t. It made me… feel confused. Like, w-… uhm,

Luz showed me her light glyph. She told me that she was trying hard to become a witch. She had no magic abilities so she needed to improvise. She… showed me that she was struggling in this world. Struggling to find her way and become one of the us.”

Gus: “And that made you… feel sorry for her.”

Amity: “I didn’t want to admit it at the moment, but yes. All this time I had been trying hard to prove myself to some… Emperor, but she was actually trying hard to even come up with one single spell.

Luz and I weren’t so different after all. Proving yourself was something she could relate to, and it felt nice that I wasn’t the only one who felt these kind of pressures.

So after Luz showed me her glyph, I unbounded our oath and left. She could still learn magic and I thought, maybe, maybe she could become a witch some day. And maybe, maybe I will get to see her again.”

Gus: “Really? Did you hope to see her again?”

Amity: “Not perse. She did get me in trouble twice, so I kind of wanted to stay away from her after the incidents. Being the reckless girl she was, getting close to her was not something I wanted.

And like I said before, being around a human will definitely not be a good influence on me. She would only slow me down and stuff and make me a weaker witch.”

Gus: “Right. So you and Luz parted ways and that was that. Neither of you won the witches duel, and neither did Eda or Lilith, because they had one right after your duel.

So that were two interactions between the two of you now. The fake abomination incident and the convention. Both not so… great interactions. Turns out Luz just gets you in trouble.

You were done with Luz, but Luz was certainly not done with you, wasn’t she Mittens?”

Amity: “Luuuuuz…. Luz, Luz, Luz. Luz started to confuse me. Before the whole library incident, which I think you wanna talk about next, am I right?”

Gus: “Uhum.”

Amity: “Before the library incident, I did see Luz once or twice. I think when she was hanging out with you and Willow, and I was with my group of ‘friends’.
This is really embarrassing, but do you remember conjuring night?”

Gus: “Ah, yes! I remember that night super well. Me, Luz and Willow did the conjuring together and we got the whole Owl House to move! It was awesome!”

Amity: “Yes. Well, I had conjuring night at my place with Boscha, Skara, Cat and Amelia. And we didn’t even moved one stupid doll.

We bragged about it all week. Conjuring night at my place! I even posted it on Penstagram with the caption: No dorks allowed, humans can bite it.

How. Pathetic. Can. You. Be.

Stupid Penstagram.”

Gus: “We were on Penstagram! People over all of Bonesborough made photos of us and posted them! So cool! I still have them on my scroll.”

Amity: “I got really confused. I didn’t get how… you managed to pull that off. I started to feel like the odd one out. Like the one who was to blame.

And Luz started to confuse me, too! Why is this girl becoming friends with Willow and bugging me! Can’t she… just like… go away or something?” *Chuckles*

Gus: “Luz doesn’t know when to stop. And luckily for you, she definitely didn’t know back then, because you two had another encounter. Your third.

And if I’m not wrong, after this incident, you two started to become friends, right?”

Amity: “Well, I wouldn’t say friends. I started to be nice to her from that moment. I didn’t consider her as a friend, yet. But I did started to call her Luz.

In my mind, she was always the human. Just, human. She didn’t have a name. She was this human that popped out of nowhere to bug me.”

Gus: “And she bugged you at… the library! The kid’s corner, right?”

Amity: “Yes. It was a Saturday morning and I had library duty. I was reading to the kids and apparently, Luz saw me.

I always loved reading to the kids, so I was not being the angry version of myself. Like I said before, at the library I wasn’t that person. I was more… myself there.

So, Luz saw me reading. And, Luz being the person she is, immediately knew, she just knew, that I had a soft part inside of me. She could see that I was genuinely enjoying it. I wasn’t faking it. I never was.

But when I saw Luz I told her that I did it for extra credit. And when she offered me to help with the kids, I told her to leave. I kind of yelled.

I said that she always got me in trouble, and I didn’t want anything to do with her. And Luz looked… sad when I told her off. I regretted it.”

Gus: “Luz was offering to help you, but you yelled at her to leave. And so she did.”

Amity: “Yeah… I didn’t want to come off as being cruel again, but I couldn’t show my soft side. Not to Luz, or anyone else I knew.

Luz left, but she bumped into Ed and Em, who were there to bring me my lunch I forgot to take with me myself. They yelled: Mittens! And that was the first time Luz heard my nickname.

I got embarrassed, and angry again. I snapped at Ed and Em, who told me I was being a jerk. They were, obviously right, but I couldn’t bare to be with Luz again. And Luz being with the twins? Three of my tormentors!

I left, wishing they wouldn’t make a scene together, but of course, they did. So I told on them and they got thrown out the library. That’s where I heard Luz saying that she wanted to become my friend.

She said in this… very dorky tone: first befriend the siblings and then the Amity!”

Gus: “Awww. That’s cute.”

Amity: “Yeah… it was… But it confused me. I wondered why? I was being really mean to her, and she still wanted to befriend me? I didn’t get it. She started to get into my head.”

Gus: “Hahaha. I wouldn’t get it either, to be fair. Like you said, you were mean to her.”

Amity: “Exactly. But anyways, I heard that Ed and Em were going to visit the library again that night, because it was the night of the Wailing Star. During that night, the books could come alive. Really cool!

I was going myself, too. I really wanted to see what Azura was like as a real person. And I also wanted to prevent anything bad from happening.

I didn’t know if anyone else was going, too. The event wasn’t something like a convention or something. You weren’t allowed to go, no one was, so the library was empty.
So, I wanted to try to prevent anything bad from happening. If Ed and Em were going, some other people might also.”

Gus: “Ed and Em were going with Luz, and you were… the only four that were there, correct?”

Amity: “Yes. Pretty strange, because the Wailing Star is pretty awesome. But anyways, when I got there, Ed and Em had opened my secret hideout.

Turns out, they were there for a reason, other than just messing around. They thought it was a good idea to steal my diary and post all the pages around school for everyone to see.”

Gus: “And that was a nightmare scenario for you, right?”

Amity: “Yes. I was lucky that I got there in time, so they couldn’t, but since Luz was the one who had it in her hands, I thought she was part of the plan as well!”

Gus: “But Luz was trying to take the diary away from Ed and Em, and by doing so, it fell on the ground and while Luz was picking up the pages, you walked in.”

Amity:”I walked in there with full on embarrassment and anger combined on my face. Luz just… it looked like she was really reading it.

And I thought that, since I was being all mean to her, she was trying to get back at me. And also, since Luz was with Ed and Em, there couldn’t be another explanation!

So, I took my diary, called Luz a bully and left… Calling Luz that didn’t make me feel good at all. I didn’t know what her deal was, if she was genuine about wanting to be my friend or not and I…

That day I actually wondered what I’d be like if Luz and I could be… friends? It was not like I thought it could ever happen, but I just… wondered. But seeing Luz with my diary and the twins… It was a confirmation that people are not trustworthy.”

Gus: “I get it. Luz got you into trouble before after all and you didn’t know who Luz really was, yet. I think most people would have reacted like the way you did.”

Amity: “Uhm, I don’t know…

Anyway, after I left, Luz immediately came after me to apologize, even though she didn’t do anything wrong. She wanted to let me know that it wasn’t her fault.

She didn’t get the chance though… because in a flash, a giant, evil version of Otabin the bookmaker came and grabbed me and sewed me into a book.”

Gus: “Otabin, that was your favorite book to read to the kids!”

Amity: “Yeah! I really love that book. But, somehow, Otabin was turned into an evil monster. And I figured it was Luz.”

Gus: “Oh really? You thought Luz had purposely done that to mess with you or something?”

Amity: “I don’t know. I thought I was gonna die, Gus. I figured Ed and Em wouldn’t let me die, so yeah.

I was sewed in a book. It didn’t feel great. I couldn’t get out. The twins were nowhere to be found and my only hope was Luz, who was probably sending more monsters after me.”

Gus: “Your hopes were gone.”

Amity: “Basically. But, then, the most amazing thing happened! The good witch Azura showed up out of nowhere and came to my rescue!”

Gus: “… *confused* Uhhh, what?”

Amity: *Laughing* No, I’m just kidding. It was Luz, dressed like Azura. And she didn’t save me right away. She got sewed into the same book as me and I thought Luz and I were going to be stuck in that book forever.”

Gus: “Book buddies!”

Amity: “Yeah, just like that! But no, Luz quickly tried to get loose. We fell on the ground and we ran off. Only our hands were sewed, so, with the book on our backs, we tried to escape.

But Otabin was right behind us and tried to take us again. While he was pulling us back to him, I managed to hold on to something that made me come loose.

But Luz was still in the book and was now getting sewed even stronger into the book. I needed to save her, so I jammed something into Otabin, which got him on the ground, under a bookshelf.

By the way, how ridiculous does this sound so far? Getting sewed into a book by an evil Otabin monster? The listeners must think I’m crazy.”

Gus: “It is kind of crazy, yeah. But the listeners will definitely believe. Like, come one, it’s a story that involves Luz.”

Amity: *Chuckles* “Yeah… So, Otabin was on the ground, so I could get Luz free. But we still needed to get rid of the evil Otabin, because he was too strong!

He was like, five times as big as us! When he got up, he grabbed Luz again. I needed to do something, or otherwise, Luz was going to become a book herself! And me as well!

I got myself an eraser, threw it to Luz and she managed to erase Otabin’s evil eyebrows that he had been given.”

Gus: “Yes, that was the reason he turned into that monster, right?”

Amity: “Yup. I firstly thought Luz did that, but Edric confessed that he did it, the next day.”

Gus: “Why did he do that by the way?”

Amity: “He doesn’t know. No one knows. He was probably trying to be funny.

So, after the evil eyebrows were gone, Otabin turned into his normal form and we closed the book. We were safe.”

Gus: “You got out of it. And you did it by working together. You and Luz. It was you two’s first time working as a team.

How did it feel working together to save each other?”

Amity: “Really… nice, actually. When you’re in the moment, you don’t realise it, but after we managed to come out of it safely and we had some time to relax, I did really felt like Luz and I had that kind of connection.

We needed to clean the library up. It was kind of a mess, and it took Luz and I a couple hours to clean it. We didn’t really talk much, I was still kind of embarrassed by the whole diary incident.”

Gus: “Did Luz talk to you much in that time?”

Amity: “No…Even though Luz had nothing to do with Otabin turning into an evil monster and trying to sew us in a book, she still felt like it was her fault.

So she was embarrassed, too. And Luz also knew that I definitely didn’t want to talk about anything. So, we cleaned the library up, really quietly. *Chuckles*

I think it was like… six in the morning when we were done. I was getting ready to leave and never speak of it again, but Luz offered me the next Azura book to lend, which I did.

Listeners, if you didn’t know by now, I’m a huge Azura nerd!

It was really sweet of her and I told Luz that she wasn’t a bully and that I hadn’t been the friendliest witch to her.”

Gus: “It was the start of you two getting along.”

Amity: “Yes. That night made me realise that, all that time, I was being mean to Luz, while she hadn’t done… anything on purpose to embarrass or hurt me.

All those incidents with Luz, the fake abomination one, the convention one, and now this one… Three times were I thought Luz was the villain. But she wasn’t it once. I was the villain!

This girl was just trying to make friends in this… new world. She didn’t know me, but I thought that I knew her, just because she got me in trouble a couple times.

After that whole… library incident, Luz really started to get in my head. She made me think about a lot of stuff. About me treating people badly, me… being the way I was in public…

She just got to me. And I knew I was going to see her again, since I had to give the book back to her in a week or something. And this was before Luz got into Hexside, so I didn’t get to see her up until then.”

Gus: “Were you excited to see her again?”

Amity: “Hehe, yes.”

Gus: “Awwww. Listeners, this was not the moment Amity fell in love with Luz, yet. Don’t be misunderstood.”

Amity: “Ohh, no, the crush came after that.”

Gus: “Yes, we’ll talk about that in a minute, but I just need to ask one question…

Where were Edric and Emira while you and Luz were in trouble? It’s not like Otabin was really quiet….? Didn’t they hear him? Did they just left?”

Amity: “I was so pissed… at them… I remember getting home, ready to yell at them. But before I had the chance to do that, they hugged me. They… hugged me? I got confused.

I turns out, they left right after the diary incident. So, they didn’t know about Otabin!”

Gus: “So why did they hug you then? If they didn’t know about you getting in danger, h-”

Amity: “They felt really sorry about wanting to spread my diary all over school. It was an ‘apology’. Plus, they were worried because I was gone all night.”

Gus: “Ohhh.”

Amity: “After they apologized, I told them about me almost dying and they felt really bad about that! I remember Ed getting feeling all guilty for giving Otabin the evil eyebrows.

From that moment, they started to get really protective of me. They felt like they messed up. And I don’t remember them… pulling pranks on me from that moment on… I think… Huh…”

Gus: “Ed and Em felt like they almost lost you because of their shortcomings…?”

Amity: “Yeah… they did… I remember that I was still mad about my diary, but they told me they would never do something like that ever again.

They said they wanted to do it because I had been acting like a real bleep that period. Not just, being mean to everyone, but also telling on them much when they skipped classes.

I was getting too full of myself and they felt like they needed to take me down a notch. Spreading my diary around school was obviously way too harsh, but still.”

Gus: “When they told you that, did that make you think? About if they were right or not?”

Amity: “Yes. I realised I was being a bleep lately. Especially to Luz. I needed to become nicer, and I wanted to become nicer.”

Gus: “And your next interaction with Luz was an opportunity to be… nicer?”

Amity: “That was definitely an opportunity to be nicer towards her, yes.”

Gus: “Tell me about the next interaction with Luz.”

Amity: “Yeah, it was at the… market I think. We met there so I could give her the Azura book back that I lent.

Ed and Em came with me, because they were being really protective of me. And they were excited to see Luz again. Oh, and also, we were going to the Knee that night to train, so we needed to get some supplies.

Anyways, when Luz arrived, I gave her the book and we talked for some time. Luz told me she was going to enroll in Hexside, which meant we could become classmates. She was excited to start an Azura Book Club with me, which I thought could be… fun.

But if Luz wanted to be in my class, she needed to master two spells. I knew she had her light glyph, but I didn’t know if she had any other spells yet. Turns out, she didn’t.

But, Luz assured me she did know two spells. I didn’t really believe her to be fair, she was kind of brabbling, like she does when she’s lying, haha.

Luz left rather quickly, and I wondered what it would be like if we were classmates. That could be… fun, I guessed. Having someone close to me who also liked Azura would be fun.”

Gus “So Luz lied about mastering two spells… She didn’t want to come over as a weakling, right?”

Amity: “Yeah… Ed and Em were there too, you know. Luz wanted to impress them, and maybe me too. I told her she would go to the baby class if she didn’t know any other spells, and being in that class is… to be fair… kind of embarrassing if you’re fourteen.

So, Luz went back to the Owl House as fast as possible to learn another spell from Eda. And they were going to do that at the Knee. The same place me, Ed and Em were going to train.”

Gus: “I love the Knee… So, you, Ed and Em were going to train for…”

Amity: “I was training to beat Ed and Em’s score on the Exams. I still had to use a training want back then, which I thought was really embarrassing. Compared to Ed and Em, I was not so great.

But they offered to help me train, which I thought was really sweet of them. I needed to lose the training wand.

We came across Luz and Eda before dinner and Luz was, again, telling us she knew powerful spells. Eda was playing along, too, being the convincing Eda she is.”

Gus: “Was that the first time you met Eda?”

Amity: “Yes! It was! And I remember I didn’t really think too much about her. My mom sometimes mentioned her during dinner, you know, saying how bad she was and stuff.

But Eda seemed harmless and just… nice. Just like Luz. It seemed like they had a real connection, Luz and Eda.”

Gus: “You could tell they had that ’bond’…

Amity: “Sure, they were both… goofy… haha. Anyhow, we parted ways after we interacted for a bit. Me, Ed and Em were going to our tent for dinner.

But while we were in there, we suddenly heard some loud disturbing noises and it turned out that Luz had accidently attacked a slitherbeast! And she was holding my training wand and magic book!

I felt upset. I was upset because Luz stole it from me. I didn’t get why she would do that. But there was no time to talk, because the slitherbeast was angry!

We needed to tame it, but since Ed and Em had faith that Luz could handle it, they went easy, so they got captured. Eda got captured too! And it was Luz’s fault…”

Gus: “The slitherbeast took Eda, Ed and Em to a cave, right?”

Amity: “Yeah. Luz and I stayed behind. We needed to save them… but… I didn’t have faith in Luz. If she got near the beast, she would get hurt…

So, I put up a barrier around Luz to keep her away from trying to save everyone.”

Gus: “You did that to protect Luz. And I understand why you did that. Luz didn’t have any magical abilities and being the reckless human she is, she would definitely put herself out there without thinking.

But you were now on your own. You were gonna save everyone on your own. Didn’t that scare you?”

Amity: “Very! But I couldn’t show that and I definitely couldn’t be scared. The slitherbeast was going to eat them! I had to do something! So, I went into the cave…”

Gus: “You went in there and tried to think of a plan how to save everyone. But… a certain someone got behind you…”

Amity: “It was Luz! I didn’t understand how she got past the barrier! This girl! She is full of surprises!”

Gus: “Listeners, for those of you who haven’t listened to my first podcast with Luz as guest, she explained there how she got past that barrier. It involved learning her second spell. Her ice glyph…”

Amity: “Yeah. Since Luz wanted to save everyone so, so badly, she started to really take up Eda’s advice. She told Luz about how she should listen to what the Isles were telling her.

Sounds a bit crazy, might be, but it isn’t, haha. But it sure helped Luz, because she discovered a pattern in the snow! And being the quick, clever thinking hero she is, she immediately drew the glyph on the snow underneath her to launch herself up into the sky, escaping my barrier.”

Gus: “That was such an awesome moment for Luz. Especially after doubting Eda’s methods and stealing your training wand.”

Amity: “And it was her second spell, so bye bye baby class.”

Gus: “Bye bye indeed. Tell us how you saved everyone.”

Amity: “Luz came up with the idea. She was going to distract the slitherbeast, while I was going to get Eda, Ed and Em out of the cave, who were glued on the wall.

So, Luz ran away and I was on my own. I didn’t know how to save everyone. The glue that was keeping them on the wall needed to melt, so I needed to perform a fire spell, which I didn’t know how to do without my wand.

But, thanks to Emira’s encouragement, I managed to do it! I thought to myself, if Luz could learn a new spell under these circumstances, I could do it as well. I saved them!”

Gus: “Incredible! You did it by performing a new spell! How cool was that?”

Amity:very… But I didn’t have time to be happy yet, because we heard Luz running away from the slitherbeast. I forgot she was still trying to keep it away from us.

Luz managed to lure the beast out of the cave, where she drew an ice glyph in the snow. She activated it and the beast flew into the sky! It was amazing! I was really impressed by Luz’s magic… and fearlessness.

Thanks to her, and also Eda’s sleeping spell, the slitherbeast was defeated. It was over…”

Gus: “What an adventure, right?”

Amity: “Yeah. And it was another adventure with Luz. That girl really impressed me. After the slitherbeast was defeated, I said to Luz that we’d become classmates, since she mastered her second spell.

Luz was excited and said we could start an Azura Book Club together! I said: only if it was a secret club, because I couldn’t share my love of Azura to everyone yet. It was too soon.

But I remember that I… kind of crushed on Luz for the first time that evening. She had her snow outfit on, which looked really cute… and the way she said, Azura Book Club, Azura Book Club? *Chuckles* I think I blushed!”

Gus: “Awww, sweet! So, where you excited to be classmates with Luz?”

Amity: “Well, yeah, but also a bit… I feared it a little.”

Gus: “Explain…”

Amity: “Well, being classmates with Luz meant that I was going to see her everyday from now on. I didn’t know if our relationship was going to change or not.

Luz and I only interacted for a couple times now, but always in crazy circumstances. She didn’t really know how I acted around school and stuff. I feared she might… reject me… if she saw me being mean at school.”

Gus: “Ohhh, so you were afraid that Luz was going to ignore you or something. Because Luz hung out with Willow?”

Amity: “Yes… Me and Willow were still… not on the greatest terms…”

Gus: “So, you wanted to hang out with Luz more? But you feared you couldn’t because of Willow? And maybe also because of your friends, who made fun of Luz?”

Amity: “Boscha and co didn’t know about my adventures with Luz and kind of becoming friends.

Since you and Willow were Luz’s first friends, she automatically became a target to pick on… And that was really dumb, but that was just the way it was. If you were just a little different then the rest, the ‘cool guys’, you immediately became an outcast.

So, yeah… I didn’t really know how to feel about Luz’s arrival to Hexside. I was excited, but also afraid. I couldn’t really describe it, but Luz became a recurring thought in my head. I just… kept thinking about her.”

Gus: “Your crush began to form.”

Amity: “It was new to me. All these thoughts and feelings. I didn’t know what it was, yet.

But I remember Luz’s first day. I remember it all too well.

That day, I needed to give a presentation to the Emperor’s Coven. To an inspector from the Emperor’s Coven. I was representing the abomination track.”

Gus: “Because you were top student again?”

Amity: “Yes. I put a lot of effort into it and when I was done, the inspector… the inspector transformed into a greater basilisk! It was an impostor!

That basilisk was at Hexside to drain everyone’s magic. She already drained everyone’s magic at Glandus, and now she was going to drain everyone’s magic at Hexside!”

Gus: “I remember the basilisk, too. I was no match for her. No one was, even Bump’s, uhm, I mean, the principal’s magic got drained.”

Amity “I remember that Bump tried to save me, but he instantly lost and passed out. I followed quickly after…”

Gus: “I passed out, too. It felt really strange, and when I woke up, everything was okay! Somehow, Luz and a bunch of detention track students came to the rescue!”

Amity: “I woke up seeing Luz next to a defeated basilisk. I couldn’t believe it, but I also could, for some reason.

I thought to myself… is this a superhero? A human superhero? Who is also… kind of cute? *Chuckles*

Gus: “Luz is definitely a superhero. And she is cute. Damn right.

After Luz defeated the basilisk, she was allowed to study every track at Hexside! Which, was, very unusual listeners. Back in the Emperor’s Coven days, students were only allowed to study only one track.

But because Luz defeated the basilisk with students who mixed magic, they finally got listened to, and were allowed to study what they want! Amazing!

Feel free to listen Luz’s episode if you want to hear from her side of the story.”

Amity: “I always thought those detention track students were no good. I thought they were just trouble makers who didn’t care for the so called ‘system’.

But it turned out they were in the detention track because they were themselves. They just wanted to study more then one type of magic!

Luz made me realise again, that judging people without knowing them is wrong. Who was I to judge those guys? They saved me! They saved all of us! The principal was right by finally allowing them to study multiple tracks.”

Gus: “It was the same thing with Luz, right? You didn’t think she was capable of becoming a witch first, but after getting to know her more and spending time with her, you realised that she could

Amity: “Luz opened my eyes. Literally.”

Gus: “I remember your conversation with Luz after she defeated the basilisk.” *Chuckles*

Amity: *Laughs* “Yeah… I think it was the first time I had a funny feeling in my stomach while talking to her. The butterflies.

I was still a bit in shock from the whole happening… I was still on the ground… and Luz came to see if I was okay. She offered me her hand and… asked me if I was doing okay… and I… was stumbling a bit… hehe.”

Gus:And blushing…”

Amity: “Maybe…”

*Laughing noises*

Gus: Okay listeners, were gonna take a short break and after that, Amity will tell us how she realised her crush on Luz, and how the two of them eventually got together.”
