I Think I've Seen this Film Before

I am tired of being powerless, I say to the wind.

No answer.

I am sick of feeling small,

I say to the sun.

No answer.

Is this the end of me then?

I ask of the stars,

And light-years away, a black hole laughs.

“I think we should look into this man,” Tony addressed the Avengers. He gestured towards the screen that displayed blurry pictures.

“Is that not Steven’s mate?” Thor asked.

“There’s not one clear image of him on the security tapes,” Tony explained.

“He might be special ops,” Nat said.

Clint nodded. “Steve said he was ex-military or something.”

Tony barely bit back a growl. “I still think it’s worth looking into.”

“No,” Nat snapped. “We’ll have no part in your petty vendetta.”

Tony growled. If they wouldn’t help, then he’d do it himself.

James’ knee bounced up and down.

Steve should be getting off work any minute now.

Normally, they would walk straight to the VA building, but today was a special day.

Steve and Peggy grinned when they spotted James.

James stood and kissed Steve’s cheek.

Peggy whined, demanding attention.

Grinning, James obligingly covered her in kisses.

“You’re in a good mood,” Steve said softly.

“I got promoted!” James puffed up in pride. He was practically purring with the knowledge that he could provide for his mate and pup.

“That’s amazing!” Steve gave him a proper kiss.

“I want to show you something,” James ventured.

Steve cocked his head. “After the VA?”

“I kinda told Sam we’d be skippin today,” James admitted. He was worried Steve would be mad at him.

Steve smiled. “Well, what is it?”

“It’s a surprise!” James exclaimed. He grabbed Steve’s hand and led the way.

They walked for a few blocks, talking about work. Finally, they stopped before an old building.

“What’s this?” Steve asked, frowning.

“Remember that promotion?” James ventured.

Steve nodded.

“The pay’s a lot better. I even got a bonus, and well, I bought this place.”

“You what!” Steve exclaimed.

“She was built during the thirties. She’s seen some rough years, but she’s got good bones,” James explained. “She just needs a bit of fixing up is all.”

“What’s this for?” Steve asked.

“Well, it’s for us,” James said softly. “I thought you might like to have a real home.”

“You bought us a house?” Steve asked.

James was suddenly very afraid that he had done the wrong thing.

Steve kissed him fiercely. “I love it!”

The next few weeks consisted of fixing up their new home.

Alphas had an innate desire to provide a den for their mates and pups.

James wanted nothing more than to make a home that was worthy of Steve and Peggy.

James replaced the electricity and the plumbing. He patched the walls and allowed Steve to pick the colors.

They painted together.

James could watch Steve paint for hours.

“You’re staring again.” Steve flicked some orange paint at him.

James grinned. “I haven’t seen you smile like that.”

“Like what?” Steve asked.

“Happy,” James said.

Steve smiled. “Well, I am happy.”

James kissed him. “Me too.”

“All we need now is furniture,” Steve said. “I actually know a place where we can get a great deal.”

“I don’t know anything about furniture,” James admitted.

“That’s ok,” Steve said. “We’ll figure it out together.”

The Howlin Hoard was run by Steve’s Howlies.

“Cap!” Dum Dum exclaimed.

Steve grinned. “I was wondering if that offer was still on the table?”

“You wanna get some furniture!” Dum Dum practically jumped for joy.

“My Alpha got us a new place,” Steve explained, blushing slightly.

“This ain’t him, it it?” Dum Dum asked, dragging his gaze up and down James’ awkward figure.

Steve nodded. “This is James.”

Dum Dum’s good humor faded away. He stared at James as if he were seeing a ghost. “B-Bucky?”
